He pushes for position, gets the ball, bangs his way to the basket, throws up some unorthodox garbage ball, flails his arms, falls down and then gets rewarded with free throws. I just can't stand this type of player. The refs fall for his garbage all game and keep giving him free shots. The last guy like him was Danny Moore from SMS, remember his puke shots?
Both those guys were winners, though. We love to hate them, but I would also love to have Webster play for my team. Too bad he'll leave UE without ever seeing postseason play beyond the MVC tournament.
this begs to be said.....and I am realistic enough to know the game is changing and isn't likely to go back, but...
The way the game was developed and the way it was played for 90 years was to try to win with nice passing, good shooting, and decent defense. Bradley is just fine in all those categories.
But somewhere in the early 1980's it started in the pros, then filtered down to the college game....that banging, collisions, and trying to draw the foul became the norm for the game in the paint. So, somehow the refs decided to let some of it go.
Now they let a lot of it go and call the foul pretty much exclusively on the defender. When's the last time you saw Webster actually get called for the foul when HE INITIATES THE CONTACT?
I know, I know...that's the way the game is played nowadays...and we did get one offensive foul on Webster when Evansville played in Peoria, and it helped turn the outcome!
But I much prefer to watch the style of play Bradley employs, real basketball with nice passing and shooting.
I hope and pray that Shaq-style, collision/banging/50-60 fouls per game basketball does not become the norm at the college level.
