Shaun Livingston

Just saw on SportsCenter that he broke his kneecap after coming down from a layup. Pretty gruesome injury. Seriously, don't watch it if you have a weak stomach. He's got tons of talent, but the poor kid just can't catch a break...

Edit and update:

Kneecap was "only" dislocated, not broken. And x-rays were negative, which is positive (that always confuses me).

Very tough injury to recover from as I understand it. Didn't the Bears 1st round draft choice, O-lineman Marc Colombo have the same injury & never fully recover from it after nearly 2 years of rehab?

Some people by virtue of their own build and anatomy are more prone to dislocate their kneecap.
Shaun Livingston must be one of those people.
In his rookie season, two years ago, Shaun missed 39 games when he dislocated his RIGHT kneecap.
Last night he dislocated his left kneecap.

I have a little medical background, so I will add a comment.
The kneecap (patella) rides up and down in a trough or shallow rut formed by both the bone in the thigh (femur) and the bones in the lower leg (tibia and fibula).
The patella is embedded into the quads tendon.
For the kneecap to be dislocated, it has to ride up and over the ridge of the trough that it sets in and in the process of dislocating, the quads tendon often is injured or tears and the cartilege that surrounds it often is injured.

Recovery is almost certain, but takes at least 6 weeks for the bone, cartilege, and tendon to repair.
It has already been said that Shaun may be done for this season.

The Clippers are battling for a playoff spot, and right now are tied in losses for the 8th and final West playoff spot.

Here are a couple articles about dislocation of the patella.

That's awful to hear. I hope he can make it back.

Has he gotten any bigger since HS? I haven't seen him play in the NBA because I don't follow the league very closely.

I remember him being an absolute twig when he was in HS. Has he added any weight or considerable strength since HS? He almost looked unhealthy thin to me. I always wondered if he would ever be strong enough in the NBA to live up to his considerable skills.

Good to hear your analysis. Glad to have someone like you with that little bit of medical knowledge. :D

Well it looks like Livingston pulled the holy trinity. Reports are that he has torn his MCL, ACL, and PCL. He's going to be out for a long time. Let's hope he's going to recover and return...

I hadn't seen the injury occur, but read this morning's paper, and Shaun's injury is a whole lot more serious than a dislocated kneecap as was intially reported.
He actually dislocated his knee itself tearing several ligaments in the process.
This is a potential career-ending injury and takes a minimum of a year to recover from.
Very tough breal for SL

It's bad news. I've always rooted for Shaun... I didn't actually see this injury, but it's a long recovery (at least in football-- this is kind of what happened to Marcus Robinson of the Bears if any of you remember that) I think. I hope he can make it back, and I hope he's saved some of that money he made.
