Here is a new Scout.com article posted today (8/18/06). It may be a premium article. It says Pettigrew has had a solid summer playing AAU, and has just been contacted by Kentucky coach Tubby Smith--

Here are a couple clips from the article--
Stephon Pettigrew had a solid summer and was suprised that he hadn't received much attention from college coaches. On Thursday his recruitment picked up, as he received a call from Kentucky.
"I just talked to Tubby (Smith) yesterday and he said that he's going to come down and talk to me," Pettigrew said. "He said he wants to try and get me to come down for a visit."
He said he would likely visit Kentucky in September, but he's not sure what weekend because he already has a visit set up to Bradley. Along with Kentucky and Bradley, Pettigrew is hearing from South Alabama, Eastern Kenucky, Morehead State and Murray State.

He is also a top wide receiver prospect.
This article profiles the preseason Top 20 football players in the state of Kentucky. Steffphon Pettigrew is rated #10--

Here is what is said about him--
#10 Steffphon Pettigrew
Elizabethtown
Wide Receiver
Despite joining the Elizabethtown football squad for the first time as a junior, the 6-foot-5, 215-pound Pettigrew appeared comfortable in pads pulling in 28 receptions for 363 yards and 7 touchdowns in only seven games. Also one of the state's top basketball prospects, Pettigrew may choose hoops over gridiron, but he has the potential to become an impact player should he choose football.

Here is his profile on Rivals.com. It doesn't mention Bradley, and refers to him as a shooting guard, though other sites refer to him as a small forward--

This report from last May refers to Pettigrew as a serious candidate for Mr. Basketball in Kentucky in 2007. He averaged 21 ppg and 11 rpg as a junior.

The front-runner for 2007 Kentucky Mr. Basketball was the only junior on the first team all state polls from the AP, the Lexington Herald Leader, and the Louisville Courier Journal. His Etown High basketball team made it to the Fifth region final, where they fell to rival, John Hardin. The Panthers had a great season, led by Pettigrew, with a 28 win, 4 loss season. After that success, several instate, and regional programs have shown interest in the star forward. He is currently receiving attention from Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead, West Virginia, Bradley, and Xavier. At this time, Kentucky and Louisville haven't shown the same interest. "He's currently a mid major prospect, but he can play at a high major school," said Haire.
Pettigrew's hard work this summer could lead him to the high major offers.
Steffphon is also a star on the gridiron. He plays wide receiver for his high school. He runs the forty in 4.5 seconds. Combine that speed with his 6-foot-5 size, and you have a lethal combination. He's getting attention from UCLA and Duke on the gridiron.

Re: BU recruit- 2007- Steffphon Pettigrew

Having a MySpace identity with a cellphone just asks for attention. I can NOT stand the 'AllAboutMe' attitude in this world!

That said, though...

Could I create a MySpace identity and pose as a UK fan? Could I then offer things to this recruit (posing as a UK fan/supporter) trying to get UK into NCAA investigations/violations?

I'm out.

Yes but we are old, at least I am.

The latest is that Pettigrew has told the University of Kentucky they have until Thursday to decide whether to offer him a scholarship. The Kentucky Mr. Basketball has said for the last year that he wants to attend UK, but Tubby Smith never offered, and Billy Gillispie, despite meeting with him, has not offered a scholarship either.--

Interesting that the article says Pettigrew was visited yesterday by Brad Soderberg and offered a scholarship to St. Louis U. Unfortunately Soderberg was just fired a short time ago.

He averaged over 33 points a game and thinks he should be getting offers from major schools, but his current list includes St. Louis, Xavier, Duquesne, and Western Kentucky. Bradley had been interested in Pettigrew, but is no longer listed with him.

He looks pretty talented. I doubt Les is interested in him now though, we have enough depth at that position.

And I can't help but think there are some deficiencies that aren't immediately apparent since he hasn't had any offers from the big boys. I have read that he isn't as tall as most places list him, and he doesn't have guard skills, so he would be an undersized forward at the college level. Maybe he could be a Marcus Pollard type of player (I understand he is quite a good football player, too), and maybe he would have had some success at a school like Bradley. But he appears to have eliminated BU already.

Another article about Pettigrew. He really sounds bitter in this interview.
Something strange is going on with this kid. It seems like not only all the majors, but now he's running out of mid-majors.

He has eliminated Kentucky, finally. The problem is, Kentucky didn't want him in the first place and never offered a scholarship. All recruits should do this, announce they are eliminating the top schools in the country, even if they don't have a scholarship offer anyway. Maybe they would get a nice writeup like this! --
