Moser gone...

Which players will leave? The jucos won't leave, but I would wonder about Osiris Eldridge and maybe less likelyBobby Hill. He (and his family and former high school and AAU coach) will be getting those calls (like Danny Granger and Joah Tucker got back in 2002), encouraging him to transfer to another school.

Assistant Brian Barone, Tony Barone's son, also was fired.

This IS big news...and I'll bet a really sad day for 'Bird fans.

PM had just pulled off a pretty good recruiting year, and lots of people thought he should have one more year to show what they can do.
I think the situation was very similar to what Jim Molinari was in back in 2002, but they cut him loose, and all the talent went on and starred elsewhere.

I assume you are referring to his 2006 recruiting class, because his 2007 class is very weak--
Sead Odzic - transfer from USC who will be eligible 2nd semester, but was shooting around 30% at USC.
Alex Rubin - a 2-star, lightweight 6'1" combo guard, who is talented, but not likely to ready to contribute next year.

He was reportedly concentrating mostly on jucos for this spring.

Yesterday's Bloomington Pantagraph headline read...
"Moser looks toward next season"
The writer seems to even be lobbying for ISU to keep Porter.

http://www.pantagraph.com/articles/2007/03/05/sports/124019.txt

The Chicago Tribune states this:

"Illinois State University fired basketball coach Porter Moser on Monday, citing a lack of progress in his four seasons at the school.

Moser, who had three years remaining on his contract, was 51-67 since taking over at Illinois State in 2003..."

"This isn't about wins and losses from a particular season," athletics director Sheahon Zenger said in a written statement. "This is about a program, and the management of that program. I have talked this over with President (Al) Bowman and he concurs with the decision."

I believe that article first appeared on Saturday, 3/3. But by the magic of the internet, it gets reposted and dated as current.

Wow. I really wasn't expecting this. I wonder if this helps or hurts us with regards to Matt Roth, or do we really still want MR?

See if you believe this one...

I read a little speculation over on the Illini board that ISU will grab Wayne McClain, then try to convince him to lure Jamar Smith to ISU, and use that and a lot of contact in and around the Peoria area to land Matt Roth and a few others.
Sounds interesting........is it a possibility?

Anything is possible but I doubt they would take Wayne but don:t be surprized to see Chris Collins as a leading candidate.

I really hope we don't consider McClain. I think Zenger can do better than this. Unless it gurantees us Richardson and others from Peoria, I don't see this as being a good hire. Like you said it's speculation from Illinois fans that are hardly interested in Illinois State. I highly doubt McClain will be hired. I don't think Zenger will go after him.

I hope Zenger persue's Brian James. That's the guy I want. James would be a major coup in my opinion.

The Illinois fans have a vested interest, indeed. They want Weber to hire a proven, aggressive Chicago-connected recruiter for his staff, and they would need someone to leave to accomplish that.

Ratface will think Collins could do better for his 1st gig. Plus, I'm not sure Chris would want the added pressure of following his father's legacy at ISU.

That would be a tough call. My gut tells me this will be an older, more experienced top assistant, or a guy with previous head coaching experience at a bigger school.

I'd like to have Chris if Doug was his top assistant. That's something I'd like!!

:D

That's what i mean. they don't give a s*** about ISU so I take anything they say with a grain of salt.

They haven't a clue about ISU or what's potentially best for their program. Those pukes on that board have an entire thread devoted to Nate Funk being a good mid-major player and that SIU is a terrible 4-seed should they achieve such.

Ignorance runs rampant at that board.

Porter hasn't graduated enough players....they may lose a scholie because of it.

Pardon my ignorance, but who is Brian James? :?

Longtime NBA assistant, currently with the Milwaukee Bucks. He was on Doug's staff with the Pistons as well as the Raptors. Before that he was head coach at Romeoville HS and Glenbrook North where he coached Chris Collins.

He is a very talented offensive coach and is widely respected and regarded who just so happens to be a 1976 ISU grad. Hiring alums has worked pretty well for you guys and SIU, maybe Illinois State would follow suit?

The Bloomington Pantagraph appears to have finally found out that Porter Moser is gone,
as they now have some stories online.

Moser's four year record at ISU - 51-67
worse than the four year record of his predecessor, Tom Richardson, 56-64.

"???‚¬?“Decisions of this matter have to happen quickly. We had to move this morning,
particularly when you???‚¬?„?re dealing with human resources and legal issues."
----------Illinois State Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger

Is this guy a lawyer or what??

The players were all taken by surprise?
They must not read message boards!

This story has one really laughable line...
"With several Valley teams suffering heavy graduation losses, many experts believe
the Redbirds could be in position to make a run for next season???‚¬?„?s league title."
