The Division I Coaching Carousel Thread

It's just getting started, but let's see if we can keep[ up with all the coaches that are getting fired.

Royce Waltman
Steve Merfeld

(we won't list Dr. Tom Davis or Porter Moser yet, until we have official word, although a Drake radio station has already reported that Davis will step down)
Dan Monson (before mid-season)
Ray Giacoletti (Utah)
Ritchie McKay (New Mexico)

New ones--
Georgia State (Colonial Athletic Assoc.) just fired Michael Perry
http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/6528016

Jim Molinari is interim coach.....Minesota may have as few as just one remaining game, so we will soon see......

By the way........why isn't anyone talking with head coach of Winona State, Mike Leaf, a 46 year old D-II coach who has now set the all time record in D-II with 52 straight wins, and an undefeated season and top national ranking from wire to wire, and the strong probability of a 2nd consecutive national title?
http://www.winona.edu/athletics/mbasketball/1955.htm

It is entirely possible that anywhere from 4 to 8 regional D-I jobs will open up shortly.
Of course we know about Evansville, ISU, Indiana State, and maybe SIU if Lowery is lured by one of the big boys.
But I also hear talk of WIU, EIU, and maybe NIU, and Ball State thinking over their situations.
Will any look at the Illini assistants?

Here's another guy who will soon become a hot commodity to possibly be hired away to some open coaching job.

I am sure most will recall when Bradley played Wright State early in the season, and we won by nearly 40 (88-49).
At that time, there were lots of people who claimed Wright State was horrible and that they'd have a bad season.......

Nope...........their first year head coach, Brad Brownell, turned the entire season around and coached Wright State to 22-9 record, 13-3 in the Horizon Conference, and a first place tie in their conference with Butler and the #1 seed in the conference tournament over Butler.
They also have an 81 RPI, after starting 5-6, then going 17-3 since then.
They beat Butler on Feb. 10, 77-65 one of only 3 schools outside the Valley to do that.

Brownell is an Evansville, IN native who prior to coming to Wright State coached four years at University of North Carolina-Wilmington, ran up a record there of 83-40, and two two NCAA appearances.
They actually won the Colonial Athletic Association Tourney last year, beating out George Mason and forcing George Mason to sweat it out before getting an at large bid and then zooming all the way to the Final Four.

He has worked under Jerry Wainwright at UNC-W and Jim Crews at Evansville previously. In 1992 Brownell was an assistant under Crews when Evansville went to the NCAA.
He also was an assistant under Royce Waltman at Indianapolis 1992-1994.

Brownell has already been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Indiana State and Evansville jobs because of his previous connections there. But he has only been at WSU 1 season, will he look to jump so soon.

And I think this might be the year that Wayne McClain gets an opportunity to move up to a head coaching position.

Updated list:

Ray Giacoletti (Utah)
Ritchie McKay (New Mexico)
Steve Merfeld
Dan Monson (before mid-season)
Porter Moser

Yet another D-I coach has been fired:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/basketball/ncaa/wires/03/05/2060.ap.bkc.harvard.coach.0143/

Frank Sullivan, head coach of Harvard
Harvard has not made the NCAA tournament since 1946, and isn't likely to anytime soon, but I guess they want to start with a new guy,
Maybe Porter Moser?

Yeah but if he follows PoMo's example of going after recruits once JL identifies them, between he and Brou.. we may never get any recruits here! :D

Look for some word this weekend or soon after from Minnesota and a few other places.

Rumors swirling that Arkansas is looking to fire head coach Stan Heath, unless they make a splash in the NCAA.
....would Patrick Beverley want to transfer back to Illinois?

Other places that have rumors about soon-to-be firings...
Central Florida (Kirk Speraw), Bowling Green (Dan Dakich), Michigan (Tommy Amaker), Kentucky (Tubby Smith), Alabama (Mark Gottfried) and it is heavily rumored that Minnesota has already asked and received permission to talk with Chris Lowery just as soon as the season ends for SIU, but also look for Minnesota to pursue Xavier's Sean Miller.

Also..South Florida fired their coach.

AND... a story this morning out of Springfield, MO suggests that if the Missouri State Bears don't get
a bid for the NCAA when the selection committee announces on Sunday, that head coach
Barry Hinson "might be fired if that happens".
Oddly, if they DO get an NCAA bid, then it is anticipated that Hinson could be given an opportunity
to coach somewhere else and fill one of the many D-I head coaching vacancies!

ISU

ISU

Wow! ISU picked a good time to fire their coach. There are a ton of great candidates that are/will be available.

I think Stan Heath would be a natural. His best successes came at the mid-major level and he is a strong mid-west recruiter. My only fear is if they got him they might give us a run for our money. On second thought, that would be a good thing

That rumor/story about Hinson is truly bizarre. I've also heard that Speraw was on thin ice in Orlando before the start of the season, so what does he do? He leads Central Florida to a 20-win season and grabs Coach of the Year honors in CUSA! Naturally, all that good karma was tossed aside when UCF lost in the conference quarterfinals to Rice! If you thought Friday was brutal for Bradley's chances to gain a little at-large support, what about being a college football or basketball coach? These men and women must drink a lot of margaritas to cope with their situations!

Other potential job openings due to "releases" by their schools could be Wyoming and Colorado State. Steve McClain and Dale Layer (correct name?) were given reprieves last year to see what their teams could do this time around. The Cowboys and Rams didn't make much of an impression, aside from Wyoming possibly crushing Air Force's chances in the Mountain West.

If you want to see how demanding the job is, I ran across this.
Even the writer of the school's newspaper is an expert on college basketball and coaching and seems to have made the call here on firing the poor guy.

Head coach Al Walker of Binghamton was fired after 7 years.
Binghamton is not exactly Duke, and it isn't likley they are going to get any of the top candidates.
But this guy led them from incredible obscurity, from the D-II level, into D-I, helped raise the $34 million they needed to build a decent arena, and in the past five years was 14-13, 14-16, 12-17, 16-13, and 13-16, certainly not bad.
He was actually thought to be a good coach, but the locals piled on especially one of the writers from the campus newsrag.
The guy ripped into the coach and even cited ridiculous claims like:
"Questionable in game decisions"
"error in judgement"
"has been personally assessed with 14 technical fouls in his seven years"
"devotion to defense" (in other words, a slo-mo style)
http://www.bupipedream.com/pipeline_web/display_article.php?id=4010
The writer calls this "Part I" of his tirade against Walker, but Part II never came, as the next day, Walker was fired.

I will entertain wagers that Binghamton is not going to do any better with the next coach.
