Wow. I really wasn't expecting this. I wonder if this helps or hurts us with regards to Matt Roth, or do we really still want MR?

See if you believe this one...

I read a little speculation over on the Illini board that ISU will grab Wayne McClain, then try to convince him to lure Jamar Smith to ISU, and use that and a lot of contact in and around the Peoria area to land Matt Roth and a few others.
Sounds interesting........is it a possibility?

I really hope we don't consider McClain. I think Zenger can do better than this. Unless it gurantees us Richardson and others from Peoria, I don't see this as being a good hire. Like you said it's speculation from Illinois fans that are hardly interested in Illinois State. I highly doubt McClain will be hired. I don't think Zenger will go after him.

I hope Zenger persue's Brian James. That's the guy I want. James would be a major coup in my opinion.

Pardon my ignorance, but who is Brian James? :?

Longtime NBA assistant, currently with the Milwaukee Bucks. He was on Doug's staff with the Pistons as well as the Raptors. Before that he was head coach at Romeoville HS and Glenbrook North where he coached Chris Collins.

He is a very talented offensive coach and is widely respected and regarded who just so happens to be a 1976 ISU grad. Hiring alums has worked pretty well for you guys and SIU, maybe Illinois State would follow suit?

Would Brian James want this job, not being sarcastic, I'm just wondering if he's looking to make the move to college coaching, or is he content in the NBA?

The Bloomington Pantagraph appears to have finally found out that Porter Moser is gone,
as they now have some stories online.

Moser's four year record at ISU - 51-67
worse than the four year record of his predecessor, Tom Richardson, 56-64.

They must not read message boards!

This story has one really laughable line...

Didn't the Panty just do a big story about Porter and everybody's plans for next year?
Did they also not see any hint of this coming?

i don't know what's so laughable about that.

The team returns everyone of significance but Dilligard. I don't see them challenging for a league title per se, but it's not entirely laughable. the right coach might get more out of the roster than people expect. You never know.

He was very interested in the job when Tom Richardson was hired. That was a long time ago for sure, but the athletic department is in much better hands now than it was then.

I would think he would have interest given his ties to the University, the facilities in place, the commitment to winning, the strength of the Valley and the returning roster. He might be tired of being an indian and would rather be Chief.

I think Zenger would be making a mistake if he doesn't look into the possibility. personally, he's my #1 choice followed by Jankovich.

FoxSports is the first legitimate organization to mention Wayne McClain being considered for the Illinois State job--
http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/6533744
Scroll down to the section titled-- "Coaching scuttlebutt"

I recall that this writer has not had a great record of accuracy in his predictions, though.

For the record, I will give my prediction- Wayne McClain might get an interview, but I predict ISU goes with a younger, dynamic personality, one with local/regional ties.

Interesting to note one of the other names mentioned --
Binghamton's Al Walker was fired with one season left on his contract. Look for Vanderbilt assistant and former North Carolina player King Rice to have a shot. Rice was a former high school star in Binghamton

King Rice is a former assistant at Illinois State. He is infamous for a heated exchange he had with an Illinois State fan behind the ISU bench at a home game back in January, 1997. He was suspended for a game for charging into the stands and threatening the fan.

Pantagraph stories on possible replacements for Moser.

Chris Collins gets the most ink, and they are sure his presence alone will fill 1,000 more seats!
But the writer is pretty sure it won't be Collins.

If by "they" you mean Randy Kindred is sure 1,000 more seats would be sold, then yes "they" do. I didn't read anywhere in there that Illinois State thought 1,000 more seats would be sold.

Regardless, Kindred is right. It's not likely that Chris wants the job.

He did do a pretty good job of coming up with a dozen good candidates, but is this the same list of candidates ISU will go after or choose from or will they, like BU, ask for applicants and choose from those who submit resumes?

From what i understand, the job is WIDE open. Zenger refused to comment when pressed on the issue as to what he is looking for specifically because he didn't want to possibly turn off a potential candidate. I believe he will target a few guys, but also look closely at submitted resumes.

I would suspect some of the names on the list will be contacted as well as a couple others that aren't on it. Zenger will keep things close to the vest for sure and I imagine it will be at least a couple weeks before it gets narrowed down to 5-6 people.

This may be a case similar to the NFL in that if he is targetting a guy that is in the NCAA's he will obviously have to wait until said team/candidate is eliminated.

The search and speculation will be interesting.

I found an interesting thread on the Illiniboard, where they were drooling over the possibility of luring Osiris Eldridge into trasdferring to Illinois if he chooses to leave ISU.
I guess they were not fully satisfied ripping off Marcus Arnold, not it's become an obsession.

Yet another example of the stupidy and hypocrisy that drips from that terrible board and 90% of its fanbase. All last year and this year they termed Osiris a "nice mid-major player", "not good enough for Illinois and the Big 10", "we don't need to compete with ISU for players", "This kid won't do anything" blah, blah, blah blah

That board has the biggest crop of jack-a**es I've ever seen on any MB in my life.

That said, I'm sure St. Bruce of Chambana will be making a couple calls as soon as his season is over. I'm sure he'd love to have him.

BTW-I need the laugh. Where is the thread? what's the title? i was just there and couldn't find it.

Illinois has the Rivals message boards, and the scout message boards, BUT this was in a discussion on Brumbaugh's independent "Illinihoopsboard"
http://forums.illiniboard.com/boards/?hoops

In the thread titled
"Any chance McClain goes to ISU?"

It starts out talking about whether Wayne McClain woud want the ISU job, then the topic generally migrates a bit until a guy posts:

"if ISU gets McClain, we can take this guy:
http://redbirdfan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6613&sid=4d1c2b810a0807dfe2f5111357d5b20c
I like McClain, but I think we need some new blood in our assistant coaching staff, i would rather this happens through one of our assistants getting a FT job."

and the link goes to a discussion about Osiris transferring elsewhere.
Then someone else suggests a trade...their assistant coach Price for Osiris....

I am sure it's all in jest/tongue in cheek, and I doubt the Illini people really want to get into grabbing someone else's players....but....

I guess in a way it is complimantary towards OE as he is the only player on ISU that they seem to indicate an interest in.
