Duke Loses - Coach K a Real Sourpuss/Gary Williams, too

tornado

Hey-- Duke (after losing 8 of their last 12 games) losing to VCU deserves a thread of its own......

After Duke's loss to VCU, Coach K scurried off the floor with the most hateful, sourpuss look on his face.
He never said a word or congratulations, just rushed through the obligatory slap-hands line and scurried off like a rat when you turn the lights on.

In the post game interview, he never even mentioned his opponent nor did he congratulate them or compliment them.
Instead he rattled off all the great things he has done at Duke, and bragged about himself and how many times they have advanced, commenting that sometimes you have to use a loss to appreciate all those truckload of wins.

Did anyone else get a little nauseated at how many times the camera dwelt on Coach K, Christian (who cares) Laettner, and the Dukies?
Geez..........I almost had to go get a newspaper to know who the other team was!

I challenge anyone to find a post-game comment or quote from Krzyzewski that doesn't try to boast on himself, or one that actually credits his opponent, VCU, with a good game!
He is a very sore loser....considering the special treatment they get all the time by the NCAA, the selection/seeding committee, and of course the Billy Packers and Dukie Vitales.

One last comment........about Gerald Henderson who cold-cocked Tyler Hansbrough last week,
the coverage stated:
"Duke's Gerald Henderson also was limited after being cut on his shooting hand in the second half."

Hmmmm....maybe it isn't just his "shooting hand", it is his punching hand and it was hurt hitting Hansbrough's nose?

If you really want some fine reading....this guy reams both Billy Packer and Coach K all in one fell swoop!

You gotta love it.........

Yeah, that was pretty good--language aside. Although, in some circles, "Duke" is the worst four-letter word in the English language!

If Duke and Coach K played and lost with sportsmanship, fairness, and humility, then I can't believe there'd even be 10% of the animosity against Duke that there is.
The only possibly way to explain why Duke is hated so, so much more than UNC, Kentucky, the New York Yankees, the Dallas Cowboys, etc.
is because of the way they play and the attitudes they have.
It was evident last night, and the only thing Coach K says after the game is stuff like we get here so much that sooner or later we have one of these rare first round losses.
It's just a fluke, no mention that the other team played well to beat you.

I thought the sequence where Paulus got all excited because of the pressure VCU was putting on him. He got fouled on a reach, pounded the ball on the court, and then came and bumped the VCU player. It was like, how dare these guys not play the way we want them to play?

I can't stand that crap. Have the balls and the decency to congratulate the opposition who beat you fair and square. This is why i don't respect Dook or Coach Kay

I have always said that it is easy to be a good winner but the true test of good sportsmanship is how you act after a loss; VCU won the game because they battled Duke the whole game and were not intimidated by the Duke name; it was a good game and Duke and coach K. should have praised VCU for beating them instead of making excuses about it.

I forget, did Bill Self compliment BU last year after they lost? Serious question here...

I found it interesting how the CBS commentators acknowledged that this was not a typical Duke team, and that fact was reflected by them "only" getting a 6-seed. ONLY a 6? That's Nirvana for any Valley team! I think a "10" would have been appropriate for them the way they stumbled in their final games and conference tournament.
Admitted, Coach K has a great NCAA record....but it's not hard to keep advancing past the first round (and the second) when you're always a 1 or 2 seed. It's obviously a top program, but I'd like to see his tournament coaching record if the Dookies always started out 10-12 like most Valley teams get relegated.
Go Creighton and SIU today!

Hey Fish, That's exactly what I said last night when it happened. It's like the Duke players were offended that somebody came to play against them, How dare VCU!

Also, didn't Mcroberts look extremely out of shape. He was loafing up and down the floor all night, mostly screaming at the officials the whole time.

I believe that Bill Self was very complimentary of us last year. I believe he said something about us having the quickest guards they played all year. I couldn't find any quotes to back that up though.

I thought McRoberts and Paulus looked OK, but what the heck happened to all the other McDonalds All Americans?
How come all those Duke players, even the seniors, looked no better than MVC players or kids from any other mid-major?
I have to wonder if Coach K's recruiting prowess has taken a hit.

I believe that Bill Self was very complimentary of us last year.

Yes, he was as it should be...most coaches are....

I say Bradley should get out of the BracketBuster next year and in return take a buy game at Duke if it will get televised on ESPN.

Well, at leat since Duke is out we don't have to hear anything else about them for the rest of the tournament. ;) Like about them winning.

That is indeed the MOST pathetic job of flopping I have ever seen.

Not only did nobody touch him, nobody even came within a foot of him and he started
flopping several seconds even BEFORE the anticipated contact.

This is one the refs should have given him a "T" for acting.

This kind of joke makes you really appreciate the fine flopping the Valley has been known for in years past,
the likes of Mike Van De Garde and Chad Klein!

Oh I would venture to guarantee there will be more then just a mention or two about Duke throughout the rest of this tournament. Wouldnt be surprised to see K in a studio at some point.

All of you guys are beyond rediculous. If you want to hate Duke then fine, hate Duke. But dont kid yourself with all this BS about Paulus shoving anymore than any NCAA point guard, or Coach K (the man who builds family Life centers in the community) being an evil warlord. Thats absurd.
Why dont you guys waste your time hating someone who truly deservers your animosity, like Kansas State with the most corrupt coach of all time, or Florida whose center acts like a thug, but went to the preppiest high school in New York?
You hate Duke because they are what every college basketball program aspires to be (3 national tyitles, ten final fours, 17 AP #1 rankings, every game on national tv, the mystique of Cameron, the legend of the Cameron Crazies, Laetner over Kentucky, a 92% graduation rate, the battle on Tobacco Road, saying no the Lakers, coaching Team USA, the Miracle minute at Maryland, and the list goes on). You hate DUke beacues it is the most elite program in the country, period. So please if you want to bash Duke, be honest about it. You hate DUKE becasue no one should be that good.
Ill end on this anecdote that Coach K shared with the Duke student body before senior night 2006.
Every year the coaches taker the seniors out to dinner, and Coach K asked the players what surprised them the most about their time at Duke.
JJ Redick answered, "I never thought everyone would hate us as much as they do."
Coach K replied, "JJ they dont hate you. They hate the fact that they cant be you. In the end the hate themselves."
Go Braves!

Don't worry, there is significant disdain for Bob Huggins, but he isn't the topic of this thread.
Anyway, I'd love to see your proof of a 92% graduation rate....that's just hogwash.

Here are the actual NCAA graduation rate statistics:
http://www2.ncaa.org/portal/academi.../grad_rate/2006/d1_school_grad_rate_data.html

All Students: 93%
Men's Basketball: 50%
Graduation rate: 40%
Graduation Success Rate: 67%
Men's Basketball/Black Athletes Graduation Success Rate: 63%

This is just a bit lower than 100% and strangely those numbers are almost identical to Bradley University"s numbers.
