Illinois vs. Virginia Tech

I told everyone this game was a LOCK for the Illini. I even have some action on the Illini in Vegas. I may not like the Illini - but I like $.

Looks like 5 beats 12 to me.....the illini have no guards who can handle a press....good win to GV!

VT only got away with about 10 different fouls on the last 2 possessions. Nothing like ACC refs. I hate the ACC. I hope they lose every game they play.

"Army-Navy" it Baby!

Illini getting 2 1/2 and they lose!

Whoooo-hoooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh good! So you still won. Good for you because if Illinois played the whole game the way they did the last five minutes, they would have lost by 40! That was STUPID basketball they played at the end! I've been a big Weber backer despite his recruiting shortcomings, but it's quite obvious he forgot how to coach tonight as well. He better snag some blue chip recruits soon or he'll be wishing he were back in Carbondale really quick!

I didn't remeber the refs missing any FT's @ the end of the game? :? No excuse...they played not to lose and did!

Illinois lost because B.Randle missed key freethrows and shot a brick 3 pointer; they could not score in the last 8 min. so do not blame it on the refs.

You score 5-2, you are probably going to lose even if the refs are from timbuktuu!

Not only did Illinois miss key shots and free throws down the stretch, they generally freaked out when Tech put on that press. They had about half a dozen possessions where they threw the ball away or lost it out of bounds and consequently had no shots at the basket. I suspect their message boards are going haywire about now.

This seems like an almost gratuitous "piling on" article, coming the morning after Illinois is eliminated from the NCAA.

But what I find even stranger is that I have read and heard many people criticize Weber for his failure to recruit or sign a few of the recent stars from Chicago area like Derrick Rose, Sherron Collins, Jon Scheyer, and Julian Wright (the list is not as long as some might suggest). But I have never heard much criticism about the 2 kids Bill Liesse seems to fault Weber for.
Patrick Beverley was a major academic problem, and refused to show Illinois his transcript, something most major schools expect a kid to do. I don't blame BW a bit for turning his recruiting interest elsewhere after that. In fact, so did nearly every other major school that was recruiting Beverley. Only Arkansas, which happened to have an extra scholarship late, was around when Beverley finally surprised everyone and qualified.
And Osiris Eldridge! There was a reason Illinois nor any other major school was ever seriously interested in him. He was never more than a 3-star recruit, and aparently no other school higher than Illinois State or Bradley offered the kid a scholarship.
So people may have a reason to criticize some of BW's recruiting, but the cases made by Bill Liesse are pretty weak, and appear to be a major case of second guessing and Monday morning quarterbacking.

"Illinois is sunk," said one rising young AAU coach. "Illinois is sunk until they get rid of Weber. He can coach, but he can't recruit."

Who do you suppose that is? Bill is afraid to even envoke the name. Or maybe he's making it all up. Or maybe he's just rehashing information read from another writer's story. Or it could be Larry Butler. If only Bruce would kiss his ring...we could all move on. (or more likely send an annonomous tax deductible donation) Or I could be completely wrong...its all just a matter of someone's opinion...

I don"t agree with Doyel"s article; Illinois fans expected way too much from a team that is not as talented as the previous ones; I think with all the distractions they had it turned out to be a good season for them and if his players make their freethrows they are into the 2nd round of the NCAA tour.
