Coaching Rumors

tornado

New member
This one is an early rumor:
Minnesota wants to get a new head coach named and get off and running with recruiting.
They have definitely decided to grab one of the top candidates and pay what it takes, so Jim Molinari will likely be out of a job.
Lon Kruger is still a possibility, but one new name that is circulating, is, surprisingly, Tubby Smith, who might be lured away from Kentucky and their endlessly dissatisfied fan base.

The other rumor is now bordering on fact, and that's Steve Alford has now called a 5PM meeting at the athletic dept. at Iowa, all players and coaches to attend.
Alford has yet to meet with the Iowa AD, so there's officially no word on his plans, but it is presumed that this afternoon's meeting is to announce his plans to the players first and the AD, then word will be given to the press.
Likely Alford is announcing he is gone.

That shocks and suprises me. Bad news for the Illini, who are spiraling downward while their competition and usual victims in Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan, look to be upgrading. Bruce had better come up with some answers (and players) very soon.

....

I guess a base of $1.8 millions plus incentives acn do some luring.

I think that's a little more than Molinari was making.

I'd be really, really nervous if I were an Illinois fan.

Minnesota will surpass Illinois within 2-3 years at most. This will up the ante for Michigan and Iowa as well. Illinois and specifically Weber are in big trouble.

Illini fans who don't have their heads buried in the sand know this. They can pad the non-conference schedule all they want, it's a downward spiral to the lower division of the Big 10 unless something is done in Champaign.

So Conference USA >> to >> Big West is a good move?
This is insane, the Big West has only one team better than RPI 140, and that's #79 Long Beach State who fired their coach.
Six of the 8 teams in the conference had nonconference SOS at or around 300!
They draw only 2000 per home game, barely half of what Eustachy presently draws at southern Miss.
But I guess Larry is a LBSU grad and wants to get back to the West Coast and party.

Hey Larry--- you never returned that phone call that you promised you make!!
And don't forget the e mails!

At Iowa, there's a lot of gress roots sentiment to go after Bruce Pearl and try to lure him back to coach at Iowa.
Iowa has several Top 100 recruits coming in and they want to get a coach in place and try to keep those recruits from going elsewhere.

Larry Eustachy is interested in the open job at Long Beach State

I see where Larry Eustachy is now pressuring Southern Miss to give him a raise and contract extension and they somewhat feel compelled in order to keep him with all the other head coaching spots open.
Nice work, Larry, you really do know how play your cards.

By the way, Larry, I have never gotten that phone call you promised!!

I've been following all the coaching changes, and wonder,
is Chris Lowery going to end up as a bridesmaid again?
Last year he was a hot young coaching candidate and didn't get much serious consideration for any of the 60 coaching spots that were filled.
Now this year with 40 more head coaching spots being filled, has he gone for interviews?
There are only a couple spots left open that wouldn't be a step down, so is he going to move up somewhere?

And I think this might be the year that Wayne McClain gets an opportunity to move up to a head coaching position.

Same could be said here.
Is he ever going to move up?
The age-issue window of opportunity is closing.

Yet another Valley coach might be on the move.

Here is discussion that a local radio staion in Wichita reported that a University of Arkansas plane was seen at the airport in Wichita, KS either picking up Mark Turgeon or flying in some people to interview him.

Here's a thought...
Did anyone here know that Wichita's Mark Turgeon has a twin brother who is also a very successful coach?

Jim Turgeon is the womens coach at Dodge City Community College (where BU recruiting targets Wade Knapp and Charlie Coley play), and is very successful.
This article notes that Jim Turgeon is the leading candidate for the open womens head coaching spot at Pittsburg State, a D-II school in Kansas.

Since it is a premium article, I will help a little.

Here is a picture of Jim Turgeon

"Turgeon ready for 'next step'

Jim Turgeon is ready to make the next step.

"Professionally-wise, the MIAA is the best women's basketball Division II conference in the country,'' Turgeon said. "The competition is unbelievable. The coaches are fantastic, and to me, in my profession, it's the logical next step to take. I really like the fact that all the coaches who are working here have been here a long time. That's something that I'd like to do.

"Personal-wise, I know (Pittsburg is) a great community. ... I know they have fantastic schools here. Both professionally and personally, I'm really excited about the possible opportunity.''

Turgeon, the women's head basketball coach at Dodge City Community College, visited Pittsburg State University on Wednesday and interviewed for the Gorillas' women's basketball head coaching position.

Turgeon, the brother of Wichita State men's basketball coach Mark Turgeon, has posted a 124-96 record in seven seasons at Dodge City CC, highlighted by back-to-back 26-win seasons.

"The three years before I got there, they won a total of 12 games,'' Turgeon said during his public interview session at the Jack Overman Student Center. "We've had some success there. It's been a lot of hard work, and I love Dodge City. But this opportunity to be in a great university like Pittsburg State and a good city like Pittsburg really excites me. I hope I get the opportunity to coach here.''

The Lady Conquistadors dropped to 11 victories last season. Sophomore Patrice McKenzie, an honorable mention all-Jayhawk Conference selection, has committed to play at Florida Gulf Coast, which finished second in the Division II Tournament and is in the process of becoming Division I.

"We had two girls right at the last minute decide to go to four-year schools, so I was scrambling for players to replace them,'' Turgeon said. "Two of our starters coming back got pregnant, and we had some injuries. My best player broke her hand, came back for two weeks and then broke her nose.

"It was just one of those years. Recruiting is going very well, and I expect us back on top next year. Hopefully I'm here though.''

Turgeon prefers an up-tempo style of play.

"I love pressure defense,'' he said. "We had to play a majority of zone this year because we weren't very good man-to-man. We like to put on a lot of pressure, change defenses a lot, and then we fast break.

"I think the best times to score are either in the first 10 seconds of the shot clock or the last 10 seconds. We'll try to get an early (shot off the break), and if we don't, we go into our motion offense, try to wear down the defense and take advantage of breakdowns. Until this year, we probably went five years in a row where we were in the top three in Region 6 in scoring and usually in the top five in field-goal percentage. We get up and down the floor.''

Turgeon also has coached five academic all-Americans at Dodge City.

"We stress academics,'' he said. "We do class checks, we have study hall four times a week for two hours, and I'm actually there. I can help them a little bit except for algebra.

"A big thing is the relationship I've had with instructors. They feel real comfortable calling me on the phone and say 'What's wrong with Sally. She hasn't been doing anything.' Also they call me and give compliments, too. To me, the communication, the bridge between athletics and education has been very good, and I think that's the reason we've had success.''

I agree..........100 job openings over the past 1-2 years, and dozens were top flight programs, Big Ten schools, SEC schools, Big programs...and Lowery has not to my knowledge been mentioned to have gone for an interview at any of them....interesting. Is he the next Rick Majerus....always mentioned but never considered seriously?
Here is something that is quite profound.

read this.................

One of the SIU sports writers & bloggers (Tom Weber) for SIU basketball -- who is also referred to as "SIU athletics spokesman" -- and works for SIU as the official
"Director of Media Services"
http://www.siuc.edu/media/becomeasaluki/bios/weber.html

...asked the SIU Athletic Director, Paul Moccia, point blank who has asked for permission to interview Chris Lowery.
Here is the answer as recorded on his web page....

"Wednesday, March 28, 2007...

I???‚¬?„?m averaging about one call per hour from writers across the country, asking whether anyone has contacted Moccia for permission to speak with Lowery.

(Athletic Director Paul) Moccia is more willing to respond. The truth is, no school has called asking for permission
."

Now that doesn't mean no school wants to talk to him or consider him, but it is a pretty remarkable fact given how "hot" Chris Lowery supposedly is as a head coach candidate.

Could it mean that Lowery is NOT as hot as the media would have you believe?
You decide...........only time will tell.
I have said all along that Lowery's style of play will hinder his consideration by other top schools.

Note this comment from a well known University of Michigan fan site/blog
who actually favors going after Lowery...but consedes this:

"There are some concerns. SIU does play slow-down: Kenpom has the Salukis 312th in adjusted pace. The accusations that Big Ten basketball is basically the Carlisle Pistons versus the Riley Knicks are not likely to decrease if he's hired."

"Lowery's offense is plagued by turnovers -- ugh -- and awful offensive rebounding."

Good points on Lowery. Also have to take into consideration that his success is riding the coattails of Weber and Painter. I would think that Altman, Turgeon, and Les would be more attractive to me if I were looking to hire a coach.

Jim Les isn't getting a lot of mention this year, as it seems AD's only want the guy who is the hottest.
As in the Stan Heath, Dan Monson, Tubby Smith, Steve Alford cases, just getting the hottest guy doesn't always turn out so well in the end.
