Mark Turgeon Confirmed New A&M Coach

There are a lot worse situations than WSU. In fact, it is one of the best midmajor jobs in the country. They're paying Turgeon $750,000, so they have the money to pay a salary that only a couple midmajors can match. And despite some player problems, they have decent talent slated to return and a good recruiting class signed. I don't think they'll have trouble getting a good coach if Turgeon leaves.

My how far the Shocks have fallen. About three months ago Witchita had an undefeated team and they were ranked number 8 in the nation. Thier team fell apart, the players are leaving and now they have lost thier coach. I see a long road ahead for the WSU basketball program. Hopefully they find a coach who can reassemble a successful program.

Wow...take your team from 8th in the country to not even an NIT invite with all sorts of team turmoil and parlay THAT into doubling your salary at a bsc school.
:-o :-o

I wish I could screw up my job that bad and double my salary!

His body of work justifies it. Good luck to him at A & M. Hopefully after a couple of good seasons he'll succeed Dollar Bill at KU, and give his old Valley cohorts a shot at the Jayhawks.

Why Turgeon, who are they not going after Chris Lowery?
Is anyone else surprised that Lowery's name keeps getting mentioned but everyone else keeps getting hired.

Agreed but isn't last season (the one most usually remember) part of that body of work. He lost that team.......

I completely understand A&M is in the Big 12 and is BCS but is it really a better overall job the at WSU? Before Gillespie they were average at best. Even this year, they played at Colorado and not one newspaper reporter accompied the team on its trip. People in College Station dont care about Basketball and around the state the program is a blip. Same as it is in vertually every other city in Texas. Atleast at WSU people care and he was the only thing it town.

He is getting a great raise but Im just not sure he is getting into a better job.

Also, I thought his hiring had to do with his familarity with recruiting in Texas, Southwest area, probably a reason why Lowery might have been talked about but his connections possibly are not very strong in this area of the states.

Other than salary, just about every other factor related to these jobs is quite subjective and we can't really say which is better. It would be up to the individual doing the deciding.

I agree that WSU is about as good a job as it gets for a midmajor. But Texas A&M is a bit more big-time, a school with more prestige and with more national media coverage.

Also- here is an article that has quotes from the Wichita players which suggests they think it's a done deal. However, nothing definite announced yet.

As has been said by a few others, I think this is a good move for him. Any early speculation as to who a possible replacement at WSU could be?

Yes it is.

Never Liked Turgeon

Never Liked Turgeon

I never cared for Turgeon as a MVC coach. :x I have strong feelings but not good reasons for that. Still I think that a coach with a strong Texas or California backround could do well at WSU. What's Dan Monson doing? I used to watch him on the sidelines when I had Gonzaga season tickets. Kansas, Dorothy, is a heck of a lot closer to California than Minnesota... At Minnesota, you can't tell a Cali recruit that it's 65 degrees every day.
WSU has the dollars and a little bit of history to lure a strong coach, What's Randy Smithson doing?

Wingrider, Dan Monson was just hired as head coach at Long Beach State.

Randy Smithson went into coaching at the junior college ranks.
He has been the head coach at Butler County Community College (in Kansas) and just finished his 13th season there (he also coached at Cowley Co.), retiring after a March 8 NJCAA Tournament loss to Coffeyville.

It sounds like the players at Wichita State would like to have some say in who the next coach is.
Is anyone else slightly surprised to hear that--
"Junior forward P.J. Couisnard said he has been considering testing the NBA Draft for weeks -- even before Turgeon's situation changed."?
