"Must Visit" Peoria spots...

Hey gang,

I grew up in Peoria and went to BU, but now live in Charleston, SC. I make it home about 5 times a year to see the folks and and some friends. I will be coming back tomorrow and staying for about 5 days. Heres my question. (just because Im curious what other people think) If you no longer live in Peoria, what are your "must visit" places when you come back to town, or, for those of you that live in Peoria, if you were to move far away, what would you miss the most?

My must visit places:

Peoria Hofbrau (to read my name on the wall and eat the best nachos in town)
Emos (for a chilli cheese dog)
Jimmys (best Bradley bar IMHO)
Rhodell Brewery (Im sort of a beer geek)
Ludys (technically in Kickapoo, but killer cheeseburgers)
Avantis
The Redbarn (A dive, I know, but it was my neighborhood bar)
A drive down grandview
A walk along the riverfront
A chiefs game (in season)
A Bradley game (in season)
A nostalagic cruise through campus

Honorable mention:

Monicals pizza (Agatuccis is sort of over rated BTW)
Kellehers
Whiteys Tip Top Tavern
Schooners (they dont even know what a tenderloin is in SC)

So what do you guys think? I know its not Basketball related, but we got 6 more months to kill.

Ryan Norgart

I think you got the right idea, but I miss the old original LaHood's pizza. The original LaHoods was torn down many years ago to make way for the Campustown shopping center, then LaHoods opened several "LaGondola" restaurants, none of which served the same style pizza.

I also miss the old Hunt's Restauant where Joe Stowell would take all the recruits visiting campus "to wine and dine them".

We also used to love the old Shakey's up on University, but that's long gone, too.

And personally I think the Ludy's burgers are overrated, and the environment small and smokey.

The only other place I'd love to go back to is any of the old Lums, but they are all gone, too.
I guess I am getting too old.

Try hitting Lou's Drive-in on Knoxville (if they are open yet)?

The Velvet Freeze for a couple wonder dogs.

And a trip to the midwest isn't complete without Steak-n-Shake.

Double A's Pizza Pub in the shopping center across from the now defunct Kay's. Northmoor Observatory on Saturday nights from spring through fall.

Double A's is a great place and Whitey always treats you good, but don't forget these Peoria mainstays:

Donnelly's Shamrock Pub - great sausage sandwich and best horseshoe in town
Kouri's Pub - cold beer and great bar food
Patio Inn - on Loucks Ave, right around the corner from Whitey's, famous for their cheese
The Spotted Cow - New location on Glen and University (caddy corner from Red Barn). Great sandwiches and top it off with homemade ice cream...

Enjoy your visit back home!

I enjoy downtown in the Spring, with the pushcarts and the local musicians playing during lunchtime.

Hoops downtown for their pizza and calzones...

.. this thread is making me hungry! :)

I agree with the Hoops call, nothing like a late night slice there. Also, the Burger Barge in East Peoria, amazing burgers.

Whenever BU alum visit me, they want to go to:

One World
Gorman's or Sully's to revel in BU sports memorabilia
Richard's for 3 a.m. cheese fries
Jonah's

Also, River Station has reopened as of a few weeks ago.

dogs, I just heard that your old college girlfriend just retired and is living off her Social Security, and recently moved into Buehler Home for the Aged.

Gotta love Burger Barge in EP. Ice Cream Shack for dessert (if you have room).

Scouter you stole mine! Oh well, at least it means you've got good taste...

Don't forget to try to catch a BU game at Shea Stadium, one of the premier college soccer stadiums in the nation.

My visits back to Peoria include:

Winter, always a BU game.

Tyronis - I went to Limestone and am definitly prejudice about Tyronis, I think its the best Pizza in the Peoria area.

Avantis

A Chiefs game is a must in the Summer.

Velvet Freeze always great when a brown paper bag can get nice and greesy before you even get into eating whats inside of the bag :)

If one has the time Wild Life Prairie park is a wonderful place to visit.

I really like going to Alexanders for a good steak.

Garners Pizza and Wings...Don't know why but I love it!
Avantis
If your heart can take it, the Penguin Pizza
If you like chinese, I swear to you Linn's Buffet in Morton is the best chinese restaurant on the face of the earth!!
Joe's Crabshack because I don't have one here.
Sully's is always good
The Silver Bullet for those mini tacos I love.
Of course, Schooner's if you can handle all the smoke in there.

Scouter, haven't you been banned from just about every eatery in the greater Peoria area from some sort of excessive consumption?

I heard the McDonald's on Bourland has actually put you ahead of the Cheeseburgler on their most wanted list.
