2008 recruits

Dick Versace rebuilt the BU program by bringing in several JC players, then going from there. I know that right now Jim doesn't have the rebuilding job Dick had, but we needed help in the middle and I hope he has solved that problem with a junior college recruit and hopefully CC.

That's my thought Chico. I don't mean to belittle JUCO players, and we've had some great ones (though I hate to see them go so quick)... but I think they're part of the rebuilding process. We have been using a lot because we have to, and while I think we'll probably always have a couple around, I think it'd be best if we had 11 or 12 4-year kids with a nice distribution between classes.

This sounds a lot like the other site i frequent for Indiana. All the IU fans are worried about the numerous JC players that Sampson is getting. My feeling is bring in whoever can help you win. Yeah when i was at BU we had Parker, Winlsow, Zobrist, Jackson and other 4 year players but i feel that JC players can come in and fill in make a bigger impact than some freshman. I think that JL will continue to build the program to a point that JC players will be the exception and not the norm.

I feel a good mix is healthy for the team and always believe in recruiting for the teams' needs at that point in time, but having 4 of the 7 recruits being two-year players is a bit much in my opinion. However, that gives us 8 of 13 scholarships in the Jr/Sr class and that's what we had last year. As of right now, we have 6 in the 2008-09 Jr/Sr class with two scholarships remaining. One of those possibly being filled with a juco player this signing period. My hope is that the other 2008 scholarship goes to a high school kid.

edited to add that I've included XC and Daniel West in the 2008 recruiting class.

If we sign one more this year and West stays true to his word and X comes back how many ride would we have left? There still is a chance Roth may commit to BU in the next month.....we would be done.......right?

I think you keep recruiting.....I cannot remember a year when there wasn't a departure.......so it would pay to have someone in mind at all times!

Lets not forget Buycks, I know things may change since hes going to prep school, but as of know he is committed to BU, an I for one really hope he ends up here.

We will never see Buycks unless we play one of the Universities that convinced him to go prep or on TV. Other then that scratch him off the list.

I don't agree with that, dogs. Buycks is forced to go the prep route by his academic situation, not by outside influences, ala Dodie Dunson and Justin Dentmon who had "peeps" telling them they were better than ISU.
From things I hear, he has told the coaches he still wants them to hold the scholarship for him and is excited about coming to Bradley.
He visited Bradley and attended the Dec. 23 game against Southern Mississippi. As far as I know, nobody challenged him to a fight, and he had a great time. He committed immediately after his visit. He is still high on Bradley, and wants to play here. I realize that could all change in a year, but this sounds like a little better situation than most commits when they go to a prep school. As of now, Buycks is still saying he's committed to Bradley.

Three Year JuCos

Three Year JuCos

I remember Dick Versace getting some key recruits that I thought
were JuCo players with three years eligibility left.
Donald Reese and David Thirdkill come to mind as guys not
quite freshmen and yet not quite two year jucos . I like the
idea of a guy with his feet wet but still three years of Div 1
PT in front of him. :)
1) Is this still legal under NCAA rules?
2) Is this ocurring out there on a regular basis?
3) Has the plethora of Prep schools effected this?
Inquiring minds.......... 8) 8) Wing 1981

I think that went by the wayside with Prop48. You are correct instead of JUCO kids are going the prep school route now. The good part is they still have 4 instead of 3 years after they return. Bad part is most of the people surrounding these prep academies are BCS pimps (can I say that? - we'll see).

81...it is just this simple....a guy can transfer to a 4-year school only if he is eligible...

There are two ways to get eligible...
--one is to pass the tests (ACT, et al) and have passing grades out of high school.
--the other is to have a degree from a junior college.

So, if a kid has good grades and IS QUALIFIED out of high school, but just doesn't get recruited, he can go to juco and then transfer to a 4-year school after one year, leaving 3 years of eligibility..... Lance Stemler is this type of recruit.

The other type of juco kid is like Shang Ping who was NOT qualified to go right to 4-year school because he didn't have the qualifications out of high school, but as soon as he gets his degree from ICC he can be eligible for the 4-year school.

A non-qualifier can go to the 4-year school, but (like DRuff or Jermaine Brown) would NOT be eligible and the school may not want to use a scholarship, or like in DRuff's case they might.

In the case of Lance Stemler, he redshirted his first season at SWICC, and actually would have had 4 years of eligibility if he had stayed at Bradley.
