AAU Basketball

Jason Whitlock, the fine, knowledgable writer from Kansas City (originally from Chicago) has named AAU basketball as the reason nobody cares about pro basketball any more. The reason nobody tuned in to see players like LeBron.

Here is what he says....

"Basketball in the United States is in poor health...

The league and the players association also should work with the NCAA on doing something to eliminate AAU basketball....and its undisciplined style of play...
AAU is the reason he (LeBron) doesn???‚¬?„?t have a jump shot. AAU is the reason he???‚¬?„?s so unskilled in the low post.

AAU is the reason Carmelo Anthony is one of the worst teammates you could have. . His game isn???‚¬?„?t about winning. It???‚¬?„?s about putting up numbers.

He can???‚¬?„?t see the floor and what his teammates are doing because that???‚¬?„?s not necessary in AAU ball
."

Not sure I totally agree with this article. Carmello did lead a college team to a national championship, and LeBron led a band of misfits to the NBA championship game.

These guys obviously have talent that was harvested by playing strong competition in AAU and a year-round schedule (this is another arguement for another thread to decide if this is even appropriate for youngsters). Given a good coach and better talent surrounding them they could be fine teamates and great all-around players (ala Phil Jackson and Mike Jordon).

Re: AAU Basketball

Yeah, I actually think LeBron's game is amazingly polished for a 22 y/o...

I do think AAU basketball is probably bad for people in a way. I wish basketball was structured like the Football Association in the UK... where all teams from the pub level all the way up to the top pros are basically in the same organization, and teams are promoted up and down from league to league by winning and losing.

Here are some reports from the Chicago/Moody camp

Iman Shumpert-Oak Park River Forest
After visiting Illinois last weekend, Shumpert was back in front of the Illinois coaches on Monday. Iman was very good on Monday, showing a great burst, good athleticism, a solid handle, great vision, and a solid jumper. He really doesn't have any weaknesses, but he could be more unselfish. Back to back steals and flushes were impressive as he and his teammates mounted a comeback againt Curie. Sources close to him feel Illinois is in good shape, but there is no timeframe for a decision. Iman will miss Tuesday as he flies to the NBA Players Camp.

Stan Simpson
(Transferring to Simeon)
After transferring from Leo on Friday, Simpson was playing, and dunking, for the Wolverines Monday night. Simpson looked good playing with the talented lineup from Simeon, but they struggled in each of their games. He needs to show some more offensive diversity as he goes forward. Word is that he has switched from Full Package to Meanstreets for the AAU season as well.

Diamond Taylor Westchester St. Joseph's
6-foot-3 wing scored from deep, showed a mid range game and finished at the rim. Taylor has emerged as on of the top 3 players in the 2009 class in Illinois and led St. Joe's to wins in each of their games on Monday.

Chris Colvin Chicago Whitney Young
The 6-foot guard had a rough first game, as most of his shots didn't fall, but in game two he was dynamite. An electric athlete, Chris has the ability to get into the lane at will. He needs to improve his jump shot and play a little slower.

Marcus Jordan Chicago Whitney Young
Few players have the body or athleticism of Jordan, but he needs to show some other aspects of his game. He seemed more willing to shoot than in the past, but still was inconsistent from deep. He can get to the basket whenever he wants, and has the versatility to play all 5 spots. He isn't in any hurry to make a decision right now, but will likely be a frequent traveler to Champaign.

Jordan Walker, 6-foot-6 2009 wing from Champaign Central, announced he is transferring to Hales Franciscan next year.
