By the way, what they are talking about is a figure called the GSR (Graduation Success Rate)
which the NCAA uses to determine how a coach or a program is doing.

All the GSR data is available if you want to dig through the NCAA website, but let me help a bit.

I too would like to see an explanation of how the Northern Iowa basketball graduation rate can be just 22%
I went to the panthernation board, and not only don't they have amention of it, they actually don't have a post on any subject in 3-4 days.

Greg McDermott seems to be getting the worst of these figures.
He wasn't even at UNI when those athletes were failing to graduate, the coach then was Sam Weaver.
But, now McDermott is in the midst of a bit of trouble over at Iowa State, as the news there is (if you can believe it) even far worse than at UNI.

The basketball graduation rate at IOWA STATE was just 12%

I found an article in which the present New Mexico coaches are already spinning excuses just incase their numbers continue to be bad in the future.

Here is the reason they cite:
"(Ruben) Douglas and (Danny) Granger bypassed finishing school (didn't graduate) for professional basketball."

Yea, New Mexico must have a lot of those kinds of guys, way more than Duke or UNC.

Ruben Douglas spent 5 years in college (1 at Arizona and 4 full years at New Mexico since he had to sit out a year after transferring). Then after using up his eligibility and receiving the NCAA allowable maximum 5 years of scholarship support, he left to play pro ball in Greece.

For anyone to use his case as an excuse for low graduation rates is insane. Ruben Douglas' case exemplifies exactly what the problem is that the NCAA is addressing. 5 years of college under a full scholarship, 1 redshirt year plus 4 years of Division I basketball with all the academic support these schools provide the student-athletes, and he still wasn't close enough to graduate? What the hey was he doing all that time? Was he even going to class?

That, Ritchie McKay, is exactly what the problem is all about!!

Sampson has drained some of his good will. He has baggage

Sampson needs to turn a corner, publicly, in front of some of the best basketball fans in the country. Heaven help the first IU player who gets a DUI.

No more excuses and blaming Dave Bliss, Fran Fraschilla, and other past coaches,

Now it's time for Ritchie McKay to step up to the plate and face the heat.
Here's proof that Ritchie McKay's pattern of recruiting troubled kids and transfers was bad.

It turns out that New Mexico's graduation rates and academic success measures have taken an even bigger dive.
Now the Lobos are even going to lose scholarships

And guess what? Danny Granger is even part of this. They mortgaged their future.
Even if they relish the one NCAA trip they got when Granger was there, Danny left early for the pro workouts

What a bombshell Steve Alford finds falling into his lap.
Two full years with scholarship losses!
But Steve didn't help himself by recruiting kids like Darrington Hobson, Dairese Gary,
and Monquel Pegues who have either had academic issues all along or are having trouble getting qualified.
Then keeping JR Giddens resulted in him failing academically, too.

I assume one of you fellow bloggers would know the answer to this question: How many years does POB have to attain his degree before it affects BU's graduation rate? I beleive every D-1 program get's a base on balls for a certain amount of time on early opters like Patrick but I do also beleive they need to graduate - from somewhere otherwise it counts against you!

Anyone know the rules?

I believe he has 5 years after he enrolled. Transfers actually negatively affect the school that they left from as well. At least thats what the initial APR rules were going to be when they were unveiling them.(I did a lengthy paper on them, as well as an article.) Though I have not kept up on them as they've been enacted.
