Iman Shumpert Still Sizzling

tornado

New member
A new report on chicagohoops.com says Shumpert was the most impressive player at the pretigious and exclusive LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, Ohio.

"Iman Shumpert drew quite a crowd of heavy hitters for his
games on Saturday at the LeBron James Skills Academy in
Akron, Ohio. Jim Les (Bradley), Bill Carmody
(Northwestern), Tom Crean (Marquette), Bruce Weber
(Illinois), Oliver Purnell (Clemson), Paul Hewitt (Georgia Tech)
and Mike Brey (Notre Dame) were all front and center for
Shumpert.

Shumpert, a sizzling-hot 6-3 guard, didn't disappoint as he put
his backcourt versatility on full display. He was especially good
in the evening session ...

"Shumpert told ChicagoHoops.com that he will look to trim
down his list of schools after he gets an opportunity to make
visits to both Notre Dame and Bradley."
http://www.chicagohoops.com/articles1/shumpertjuly1.html

"Shumpert was likewise terrific in the evening session running
the point, and setting up his teammates for easy buckets. As
usual, Shumpert showed an ability to play either guard slot
interchangeably. Simpson teamed with Shumpert and cleaned
up inside while also showing his ability to knock down his hook
shot with either hand on the block. Highly regarded Delvon
Roe, and state of Missouri standout Scott Suggs were among
Shumpert and Simpson's teammates."

Van Coleman (Hoopmasters) has this to say, noting Jim Les in attendance:
"Iman Shumpert 6-foot-3 PG Oak Park, IL Oak Park & River
Forest is really starting to mature as a point guard prospect.
He is quick and explosive off the dribble and is a solid passer.
He drills perimeter jumper to set it all up. He says that North
Carolina, Illinois, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Bradley,
Notre Dame, and Connecticut are his schools."

wow......

Wow, amazing to see Bradley hanging in there with all the big boys. This kid has told Bill Self and Roy Williams he wasn't interested in hearing from them, but still wants to keep Jim Les and Bradley on his list. I know it's not likely, but if he wanted to come to Bradley, he'd be a superstar from day 1, not to mention the highest rated recruit ever to commit to the Valley.

How high was Wichita's Mo Evans?

Who was the highest recruit to the MVC since 1990?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm :|

I doubt he'd be a "superstar" from day one. That's pretty strong :o Even Michael Jordan wasn't a superstar from day one.

Remember, Shumpert will be joining a pretty good BU team and will, at best, challenge for the fifth and final starting spot early in the season, IMHO 8) (take this for what it's worth since I've not seen him play. I can sometimes be a pompous @ss  )

I do believe, however, that he could be a key contributor down the stretch and in postseason play during his freshman year. I think he potentially could begin to "take things over" by the end of his soph. year.

This got me to thinking (a dangerous thing sometimes  )...........

Who was the highest rated player ever recruited to BU (who played) and who was a "superstar" from the start? The only name that I can think of is JJ Anderson :? Even Hawk, Parker, Winters (and anyone else I may have left off) was not "The Man" during their freshman year. Am I right?

Hawk played center a lot in high school as one of tallest players at the House for FRank Lollino- but fresh stats pretty damn god at BU

MINS FG% FT% REB AST TO Block Stl PTs
37.4 58.1 77.1 6.1 2.7 2.1 0.6 1.7 14.6

I agree, it's hard to argue with those numbers, most of our players would love to have those this upcoming season.

Mo Evans was #43 in the class of 1997.
Iman Shumpert is in most Top 25-30 rankings nationally.
I can't find that any MVC recruit has ever been that high.

From old HoopscoopOnline recruit rankings (they were one of the very few who ranked
high school players in the 80's and 90's)--
Here is a listing of MVC recruiting since 1983, and the highest MVC recruits:
1983 Len Bertolini was the #69 ranked recruit in the US and signed with Loyola.
He later transferred to Bradley. Carlton McKinney #68 and Brian Rahilly at #99,
both by Tulsa, were the top MVC recruits--

1984 No Top 50 recruits--

1985 Steve Grayer #47 signed with Wichita State and was the only Top 50 MVC recruit--

1988 Townsend Harris #57 signed with Indiana State, Antonio Harvey #61 with SIU,

1989 Bradley signed #26 Michael Hughes of Peoria, but he never played for BU.
#38 D.J. Boston and #89 Claudis Johnson signed with Wichita State, and #90
Chris Jones signed with Drake.

1998 No Top 100 recruits. But Traves Wilson was #73. He initially signed with Arizona State

2001 No Top 100 recruits. But Marcellus Sommerville was #57, and ended up at Bradley.
The highest MVC recruit is #142, Jamar Howard. Note #251 is Antoine Tisby to Bradley.

2002 No Top 100 recruits. The highest MVC recruit appears to be Dana Ford at #263.

He would start from Day 1 and that might be the best selling point we have. He would be not have to worry about being recruited over every year. Lets say he goes to an ACC school and the next year that same school gets a "Shawn Livingston" type. He would not be a starter anymore, just like Bobby Frasor at UNC. If he comes to BU he starts all 4 years. SELL IT COACH!!!

I don't think that would be our best selling point, and I don't think Coach Les should or would use it. Shumpert could get a lot of playing time as a freshman. However, that would be by virtue of his skill and effort in PRACTICE. That's the mantra that got us to the recent success we've had, and I think we'd lose something in the team overall if we make promises about playing time way before the guy puts on a Bradley uniform.

I think one of our best selling points would rather be that Coach Les is going to be fair. He doesn't care if you're a freshman or whatever, but if you play harder and better in practice than a senior on the team, your name is going to be called.

Knowing JL as I do, I would be extremely surprised if he told any recruit that they were coming in guaranteed to start.

JL gives chances, but puts it on the kid to earn it- to make he and the other coaches "have to" start/play him. His visit could be crucial- sell him on atmosphere and academics- he seems like a bright kid......

I see a mix of the two....."you'll have to work hard and earn it but there is NO reason you can't start as a freshman."

No promises to him but a carrot dangling for sure.

Exactly! However, all of the schools on his list excel academically. Where BU can stand out is being a small, intimate school in a basketball-crazy town. If this kid doesn't want to go to a 20,000+ population university then BU is the place for him :D

Didn't Wichita State get a couple of McDonald's All-Americans in Carr and Sherrod back in the late 70's/early 80's?

If all Shumpert was interested in was a "basketball education", he would have dropped BU off his list already. The fact that we are still listed among the big boys tells me that BU has a better than average chance of landing this kid. :)

Well said. I believe the best way to go about it is to tell him he just as good a chance as anyone else to start. I disagree with the tactic of promising playing time. I'm sure it happens all the time, but there are too many unknowns, and I think that if a player is promised playing time, and especially a starting role, they are bound not to work as hard.

More verbage on Iman from yet another insider report:

"Shumpert was outstanding in the afternoon session, draining three-pointer after three-pointer and working his way into the interior for scores. However, he was played a passive game in the night session and was a non-factor. We will be watching him closely on Monday.

Iman Shumpert has a host of schools on his list including North Carolina, Illinois, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Marquette, Bradley, Notre Dame and Connecticut. All but North Carolina and Connecticut have offered, and Shumpert stressed that he is wide open at this point."

Even more evidence Iman Shumpert is sizzling,
now a NEW premium story seems to be coming out every single day!

The latest from Dave Telep (scout/Insider)

says this:

"Five Coaches Eyeballing Guard"

Then lists......."Bradley head coach Jim
Les
, Clemson head coach Oliver Purnell, Notre Dame
head coach Mike Brey, Georgia Tech head coach Paul Hewitt, and
Marquette head coach Tom Crean to his afternoon skill sessions at
the LeBron James U.S. Skills Academy on Saturday, reports
Scout.com's Dave Telep."

Again....nice to see BU listed right at the top of the list of BIG BOYS.
