South Padre Island Blog thread

If anyone wants to read and see pics from the Bradley fans traveling to South Padre Island, I'll stick this thread at the top of the board. Anyone else with some reports or pictures, feel free to post.

Right now we are in the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport, and headed to Houston, then Brownsville; then driving to South Padre. Some other BU fans who were on our flight to DFW, are headed to McAllen next.

If I can get my camera working, I'll try to post some pictures from the island and hotel. The Bradley team left Peoria yesterday for Chicago, and is flying to Texas today.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

We're just sitting in the Houston airport, waiting for the flight to Brownsville at 3 pm.
Coach Stowell and Dave Snell are here waiting for the same flight. They flew out of St. Louis this morning, and Dave told me that the team stayed in Chicago last night, and are flying into Brownsville today, too. I hope they didn't experience weather delays.
So contrary to earlier reports, the team will not be getting to their South Padre Island hotel until later this afternoon. I don't see any other Bradley fans here.

Hope everyone had a nice Thankgiving dinner! Ours was at the Chili's in the airport concourse.

I just learned that the Bradley team was scheduled to arrive here at Houston International from Chicago and be on the same flight as we are to Brownsville. It departs in a little over 30 minutes. But they are not here yet.
I hope they make it! There is one later flight to Brownsville in case they don't make it.
Boarding is about to begin. I'll let you know if they make their flight.

Good news. The team arrived just in time to board. It looks like they made a stop at the concourse McDonalds, as all the guys have bags of food and drinks. Gotta get on the plane.

dc....can you or T delete my thread on south padre.....i see this one know and can just file my reports here. Thanks dru.

Got it 12.

Nice to see you guys made it. We are checked into the Sheraton as is the team.

Funny story--
We were delayed taking off from Houston for about 20 minutes because the attendant announced that our plane was too heavy. Don't ask me how they knew the plane was too heavy, I don't know. But they required that 1 flier had to disembark and wait for the next flight 3 hours later.
After several offers of cash and free flight vouchers, still nobody volunteered.
So to ensure that the plane could take off and the rest of us could get to our destination, Athletic Director Ken Kavanagh volunteered to take their offer and wait for the later flight.

The team loaded onto a bus and was taken to the island (about a 20 mile drive from the Brownsville airport). We rented a car. The landscape here is about as barren as Alaska, and the weather today is similar. The high temperature yesterday here was 87, but today's high was just 57. The surf's up pretty good.
The players must have the evening free, as we saw them head off into different directions. They have a spectacular pool area here, but I doubt any of us will be using it. I had to stop at the local Walmart to buy a media card for my camera, since I left mine home. I'll post some pictures and vidclips later tonight.
Maybe we'll look for Braves12, O&O, and DRU and find some good seafood.

I hear all the players are in good health. There are a couple of the walkons I didn't see, and they must not have made the trip. But All the scholarship players are here, as is Ryan Phillips.
More later.

Dogs and I are at SPI. It is cold/cool and very windy. Might affect our golf game, of course rain is coming....yikes. DallasBrave on his way from McAllen. Waiting on HoustonBrave. O&B74 here tomorrow. Not much open on the Island tonight except sortsbars....darn! Saw DC from Peoria to Dallas. Dave Reynolds on the plane to McAllen so there should be an article in the paper tomorrow.

OK...to make it official I logged out braves12 and took control of the laptop....I have other forces surrounding various local media outlets and don't be surprised if Reynolds article tommorrow has a dogsrus ring to it.:)

With that said...once again happy thanksgiving and LETS GO BRAVES.

Hey Braves 12...Keep an eye on DRU on the golf course if you bet any money...his score keeping is a little suspect as he only likes to count the good strokes!!!!! :p .... have fun and hit em' straight...bring home a couple W's!!!

GO BRAVES!

Chucky T,

Dru said he only shoots in the low 80s. That must be the temperature!

He is whining that it might be cold playing golf. I don't think the cold compares to the wind. He will need those Texas punch shots.

DC,

I took a tour of the island. Only sports bars open. Not sure what your options will be for seafood tonight! Waiting on DallasBrave and then headed out for burgers and sodas. You have my cell number. Call if you want to meet.

Enjoy the stay gang. It's actually common for flights to be overbooked. The airlines want to be sure that every flight is full. I used to watch that airline show on The Learning Channel and "asking" for volunteers to choose the next flight was on almost every show. If no one volunteered, one or more of them were forced off. Also if y'all missed it, it was actually flurrying during most of the Cowboys game that started about 3pm. Very rare snow day for Dallas in late November.

We are hoping the weather is a bit better today.
We drove around the island last night and had a Thankgiving dinner at one of the restaurants.

Padre Island is actually the name of this island, and according to Wikipedia, it is the worlds longest barrier island! It is 130 miles long and only a few hunder yards wide for most of it's length. From the airplane, we could see it has a beautiful white sand beach on the gulf side for it's entire length.
Here is more info.--
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padre_Island

Only the couple mile stretch of the island at the southern tip is populated.
As we flew into Brownsville, we followed the coast and could see the entire length of the island. It is a long, thin island that runs north and south along the south tip of Texas. 98% of the island is uninhabited and much of the northern end does not look accessable by roads. Most of the center of the island is a wildlife preserve.

The resort area is nice, but there are not a lot of people here at this time of the year. There are a large number of condos and hotels at the south end where the causeway crosses over to the island. The Civic Center is at the north end of the resort area a mile or 2 from the hotel.

So much for the geography lesson!:D

Here is a site that has live beach-cam and surf-cam views. It is still a little blustery today--
