Collins

There's a question I've been asking all year!! What the hell!? He's probably been our best big man this year when he's in, but we don't utilize him! He's 7 feet tall, put him in!

Since I've finally got a chance to watch a game via (good) TV, I think now I understand why Collins loses his minutes. For the English majors reading this, you can see I said "Collins loses his minutes" which implies that it's more his fault than Coach Les' decision to bench him.

Watching tonight's game, there were numerous instances in which I saw Collins "space out" on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Unfortuately, I don't mean "space out" in the spread the floor sense, I mean it in the mental sense. He seemed to basically look lost or just stand on the floor while the game moved around him. If he ends up in the wrong position on the floor, he doesn't seem to know where to go or how to fix it.

I freely admit I was one that was clamoring for him to get more minutes, but I don't think that's possible until he knows where to be on the floor, what to do, and how to adapt when it all goes SNAFU.

When Collins came out the last time, Les was giving him a royal chewing. I don't know what DC did, but Les foolishly benched him the rest of the game for it. Gee, don't you think we could've used a 7-footer in there, Les?!?

It wasn't a foolish benching at all. this will help DC later this season. He needs some toughness. Right now he has none and maybe hasn't needed it wherever he plays.
DC is very soft and MSU was killing him around the basket. He has a soft touch for sure but lacks intensity ALL the time on the floor

All of the upside that Collins gives you on the offensive side, he completely gives it away...and then some... on the defensive end.He played a terrible, terrible game on the defensive side tonight...He is SOFT, SOFT, SOFT right now. He was getting completely manhandled on MSU's offensive boards tonight. Rebounding is all about blocking out, desire, and effort...and unfortunately Collins was 0-for-3 in those categories tonight. Singh had to be brought in for him just to show MSU that someone from BU was capable of putting a body on someone.

Hopefully this will be a learning experience for him...but he simply had to be taken off the floor tonight in the 2nd half...MSU might have had 75 offensive rebounds if Collins would have been in there for much of the second half...

What about TCS......he only played 2 minutes...1 asst and 1 to? He must of done something wrong to only play 2 minutes............I like WE and think he will be great before it's all said and done.....but another missed 3 makes him 0-11 this season....he needs to get in closer and score IMO! DC should have still gotten some more minutes in the 2nd half! You will not get any better sitting on the bench when 7',6'10 and 6'8 are on the court against your 6'7 and 6'5.......this is the reason for the O' rbs MS seemed to get at will!

I have to agree but when he was on he was on. Jeckle and hyde. He needs to grow up quick! We could have really used him tonight. Tough loss but we will not see anyone as good at home. If we play the same D the rest of the year at home we will not see another loss at Carver. What we treally needed was someone other then DR and JC make plays. SM tried but he is only a freshmen. Salley did play better towards the end of the game, that was nice to see..

I thought DR played the game we needed from him, JC was swarmed, AW did not play his part. I give up on him this year, he will need to mature a bit to become the player he is capable of becoming. I thought for a moment we could dictate the game but we were one player from doing it.

BTW the crowd was great from TV land. You guys rocked!!!!!:p

You nailed it, but also, while MSU was racing down court on offense, Collins was like on a leisurely stroll in the park getting back on D.

Collins can be a difference-maker when he's on the floor. Singh can't do that.

SS picked up three fouls in seven minutes and now has 17 fouls in 64 minutes this season. Keep that in mind, everyone who clamors for him to get more minutes.

he also played tougher D, had 3 rebounds,aand shot 5 ft's...in 7 minutes...
DC has a much bigger upside but you can't wait for him to play tougher during a game against MSU...maybe after watching from the bench the last 10 minutes he'll get it next game. I think if JL thought they would win the game with DC he would have been in there

He lost his man way too many times on defense and did not rebound like a 7 footer should; he is still learning as jr. college ball is a lot different but he needs to be more aggressive on the boards.

I think SS came in when DC got out-muscled again on the defensive end and Mich St got an easy bucket.

Enter SS.

He played great!

And I think this was more of a tempo for him. Generally, Bradley plays too uptempo for SS to be effective and helpful... but in a slower game like this, it not only helped him, but he was able to help Bradley.

So I look for SS to get more playing time in slow games, like maybe against SIU... and maybe against UNI if they are looking for a 1/2 court game with Coleman.

Keep up the hard work SS!

I don't think it would have mattered very much since MSU almost had more offensive rebounds than we had all together. If you are going to question Collins toughness, how many boards did Egolf have? I still have yet to be impressed with him.

What in the world does Egolf have to do with this thread? I guess you can bring him up to try and change the subject if you'd like to, but it doesn't have anything to do with this discussion on Collins.

My assessment of Collins was merely answering those posters above that seem to be bewildered as to why Les didn't give DC minutes in the second half. If you give significant minutes to Collins in the second half of that game, Bradley loses by 15. DC did nothing on the defensive end to earn additional playing time in the second half. That's how I saw it.

If you want my assessment of Egolf...he was overmatched in this game as well. That's why he spent the second half sitting next to Collins. And that's where those guys needed to be to give BU any chance of pulling this one out.

As I said above...I hope Collins and the rest of BU's bigs learn a lot from this game. It has been mentioned before by Les that these big guys suffer from being too nice and they need to develop a bit of a mean streak in them to be successful at this level...and I think we saw that on display tonight...

Collins had a ball tipped away from him on Offense in the 1st half. it didn't lead to a turn over but it leads to one of his 3 biggest problems...and here they are:

1) Ball control: He's not very steady on his dribbling and control of the ball. SS is better, not the best. and MS is the best at this. That is why, I think, he is still starting (among 2 other reasons *see below)

2) Decision making: He's not the brightest when picking between MS and SS. HOWEVER, this could be Les's fault. I think Bradley brought in Collins thinking he's gonna know what to do and be 100%. So they did very little for him at the beginning and focusing on Egolf and Theron. I think with more playing time Collins will get smarter and a better presence under the hoop.

3)SOFTNESS!!! For a 7'er he is not that powerful. Gray, Sutton, Naymek were able to post up against him, get in front of him on the O & D boards, and overall walk all over him.

DC needs more time and some more coaching. Give him time and he'll be great.
But
the way Salley played tonight I'm not sure he is that great of a choice. MS needed to produce to save his starting spot and he did tonight.

You guys realize you are questioning the same coach that said Sam Singh would be essential in order for BU to be competitive against MSU last season, and didn't play him until Bradley was down 30+ and the game was out of reach. . .

Collins was out of position on some rebounds, but he was able to alter a large % of MSU's shots in the first half, and in the second half, they shot 4-5% better, which if you want to split hairs was the difference in the result.

That's true squirrel but I think you may have missed DC getting burned to the hoop about 4 times for easy layups and also getting manhandled on the boards, he was like a ball in a pinball machine. On the plus side, DC only missed 1 shot again for his 7th in 9 games. Went 2 of 3 in 12 minutes. He's now shooting like 72% or something. It's clear Wilson is coming along great and it's very obvious the coaches need to work on DC's defense as they are the 2 huge contributers at this point in the season along with Sam. This will be fixed, I have confidence in Les and gang.

Singher was still recovering from his many...maaaany...MAAANY injuries

but your second point was an overall team effort.
Bradley's Defense died in the second half...It may have been Collin's sitting, it may ahve been JC being tired, it may have just been the team being tired.

I think Les realized that collins was getting manhandled and felt Salley was a better matchup...which he was (8 rebounds)
