Red shirt players

Is there any other red shirt players besides Austin? I saw an at least 7 footer today in Bradley hall. It surely wasn't Collins and it wasn't Wilson. He had the bradley athletics sweat clothes attire on so it could of been a basketball player but I know I havn't seen him at the games. Would be pretty sweet to have 2 seven footers on the team.

He is not a basketball player.

I believe Thompson is the only redshirt player on the roster this year. Although, at this point, Austin may as well be!

Unfortunatly he can't because he has played in at least one game.

That's right... he played 6 minutes against Md-ES going 2-2 from the floor finishing with 4 points, grabbing 1 Offensive Rebound and 2 Turnovers.

I just wanna say.... and it is just a weird gut feeling (but it could be gas), I think there is more to the story as to why RA does not see the floor.

JL said it was the fact that he got a late start and is still learning the system. It was in the paper a couple of weeks ago and even hinted that RA may become a contributer before long. Maybe he becomes the secret weapon in conference play-who knows

I do not see Austin getting any minutes unless someone gets injured as we seem to have our rotation of players set.

Anthony Thompson is redshirting
Ryan Thornton is redshirting (actually sitting out a year due to transfer)

The only other player who still might redshirt would be Cameron Sweatman.
I suspect he won't play in any games and will therefore still be a freshman next season.

Then....there is a possibility that any other player who plays less than 20% of the team's scheduled games, would be eligible for a redshirt if they are injured.
The only players on the roster who could possibly fall under that "medical redshirt" rule would be Rashad Austin, Ryan Phillips, and Brian Lavin, all of whom have only played in two games.

Mac-- Rashad has played in both the UMES game (6 minutes) and the SEMO game (2 minutes).

Of course they can....like all D-I athletes, they have 5 years to complete 4 years of eligibility
and can take a redshirt year at any time.
Actually....there is even one more rule, that allows a college athlete to take up to FOUR MORE redshirt years BUT only if done for the purpose of serving military time or missionary time (as the Mormon students do), thus they do not lose eligibility.

It's early, but I learned something new already today!:)

I have heard about the military time and missionary time for redshirting, but never about the walkon redshirt. Interesting.

That's probably because it is really never done much in basketball, although Creighton has a kid named Casey Harriman who walked on his freshman year and redshirted.

The only reason a lot of kids would walk on would be the hope of some playing time, so if he isn't getting PT he probably wouldn't even "walk on".

But it is done more in football, and here are a couple examples I could find:

---Michael Kasprak was a kid who had some D-III offers, but wanted desperately to play D-I football, so he walked on a WIU.
He was told by the football staff at WIU that he needed to bulk up, so he redshirted his freshman year so that he can play four more years.
He "may some day earn a scholarship" but he served his first year at WIU as a "walk on redshirt".

---This story is about Maryland football and mentions a walk on redshirt named Paul Pinegar.

http://umterps.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/pinegar_paul00.html

but if you look at their roster....you note they have 18 "Freshman Redshirts" on their roster! These are kids who are freshmen eligibility-wise but have already spent a redshirt year, and more than half of them I see are walk ons.

Didn't BU have that walk-on Adams kid who redshirted his first year? ;)
(I believe it was NCAA necessary to redshirt a walk-on who received academic financial assistance in his case)

I've also wondered if something else was up with Austin. In the past, BU never announced a team rules suspension until after the game, just to keep the other team guessing / preparing for other players....
