SIU v W. Michigan

Good all mighty is SIU a horrible team LOL. 41 points, an average of 20.5 points a period is among the worst offense wise. I don't think SIU will be much better at home, they've consistently showed that they can't score at home and on the road. Bradley can easily score 50 points on a horrible "BU" shooting night. This is almost worse than the Wichita State #8 ranking meltdown last season. Also, just because SIU is doing horrible, doesn't mean the whole conference will be horrible and will make a 1 bid. Bradley, Creighton, N. IA and even Drake have shown early season success this year. I would think at least 2 of them would make it if they continue there success.

Jason

Mullins was the leading scorer at the 1/2 for SIU with 4 - LOL!

But hey... if SIU can't win at home and can't win on the road... where are they needing to schedule games to win - haha, LOL!

Sheesh .... Puts pressure on BU ... we can't afford to drop the game in Carbondale.

BTW ... did anyone see the CNN report today on the serial killer that graduated from SIU?

Well, maybe so. But Bradley's lost a lot more players than SIU has the last couple of years, and we're still playing well. One would have thought that a couple of their players would have stepped up to replace Tatum and Young, but apparently that has not panned out as of yet. Obviously SIU's offense has to get better because even a great defense won't make up for their offensive shortcomings.

Hmmmm. Sounds a lot like the Chicago Bears' problems as well! :D

We lost some players but we also have not come close to the accomplishments of SIU. Lets make it to the dance for the next six years, win the regular season or finish in the top 3 for that matter and win in St. Louis before we completely disparage SIU. I am as happy as anyone that they stink, I think its great even if it is bad for the Valley but they have been the class of the league the last 6 years and still are until proven otherwise during the season.

Bradley on the road is not a good basketball team.

--basically expecting a Loss at Butler--

I am not looking at X-mas cookies to eat til after they are cooked.

A score I noticed from tonight--
So. Carolina Upstate 58
So. Methodist 56
http://upstatespartans.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/121807aaa.html

South Carolina Upstate gets it's first win over a Division I opponent, and it's a win on the road at SMU. They are a first year D1 school (also called So. Carolina-Spartanburg). They are a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

You can't convince me that the incredibly easy, cupcake-filled preconference schedule that Matt Doherty plays every year doesn't hurt his team. His team won their last 4 games going into this "gimme" with SC Upstate (to go to 4-4), but they were over Paul Quinn (be honest, does anyone know where that is? They are NAIA), UTSA (RPI 289), TCU (RPI 208 ), and Houston Baptist (2-12, provisional D1, and no wins against D1 teams).

After this loss, SMU's RPI is 327 with a SOS of 315. Pathetic for a school that has such a rich athletic history, although some of it tarnished.
Matt Doherty is in his 2nd season at SMU. And I also recall there were people who thought Bradley should go after him when they thought it was time a couple seasons ago to dump Jim Les.
I know they are a young team, but with the wealth of talent in Texas, and considering Doherty has the ruputation as a super-recruiter, I can't believe their fans are too happy with the way things are going there.

Wow...I would have to agree with other about revising my appraisal of SIU. I had said that their lack of guard play would be their weakness that would allow us to out perform them this year and gain the regular season title and maybe even the tourney, however, I didn't know it would be that huge of an achille's heel. Also, I would have thought Falker would step up and be huge for his senior year, and Mullins and Shaw would step up to compensate for the the absence of Tatum and Young. None of those three have done that.

Another hindsight observation is the style of play SIU has, espeically under the direction of Lowery. In reading the many write-ups and interview on him down here, his coaching style and his system is somewhat reminiscent of Molinari. The emphasis on hard-core half-court defense and very intense practices seems familiar. It is as though, like Jim Molinari, the offensive side of things gets neglected--both in terms of practice and in terms of personnel (recruitment and/or who plays). I have actually been amazed throught the years that SIU has been as so successful, and concistently so, and so long, by basically playing knock-down drag-out ball that is bascially designed to be low scoring, low possession, keep the game close, and win ugly. It was a style of play we Bradley fans, (as a whole) came to grow tired of under Molinari.

What I sort of drad, now, though, is that given the essential home-cout advantage SIU has in St. Louis, is that they will have a mediocre records going into the tourney, but they suck it up, get momentum, and win the thing and throw things off for BU and Crieghton. On the other hand, that may be what the conference will need in order to get more bids if BU and Creighton dominate from here on out and look to be at large locks at the end. However, if BU and Creighton stumble some and/or slog through the rest of a competitieve season and one of us needs the tourney win, but SIU steals it, we could get in trouble.

Sometimes being a BU and MVC fan can be so much fun--so close but never quite there ;-) George Mason proved it could be done, but it would be nice though if we could see a Valley team there in the near future.

So, does anybody else think that Lowery has to close his eyes when he goes to the can? If he doesn't he's probably hallucinating seeing all sorts of cash swirl away......

no...the entire team must have to keep their eyes open, or they wouldn't hit the "can"...they'd airball it!

Final 57-41

Hey.....SIU can't be a bad team, because so many "pundits" over the past few years have scolded us for not worshipping at the Chris Lowery altar.
I have said for 3-4 years that he is a good defensive coach but can't coach offense. 75% of their offense comes off steals, offensive rebounds, and garbage. Nobody can hit a jump shot, and Falker can only score if he's within an arms length of the bucket.
Has anyone ever noticed their shooting pct and assist numbers...
Last night--- Josh Bone 1-8 and NO assists, Matt Shaw 3-11 but NO assists, Tony Boyle 1-2 but NO assists, the entire bench goes 4-11 and NO assists.

This proves they are touching the ball a bunch and launching a LOT of shots (Bone and Shaw might just be their two best outside shooters and they are 4-19) but nobody ever gives up the ball to someone else for a better shot!!

I note that Carlton Fay was only in the game for ONE MINUTE, but it didn't stop him from launching two shots in that interval!
So he accounted for 7% of the entire team's whole-game shot attempts, and he did it playing only one out of 200 minutes played (0.5% of the playing time)
I don't know for sure, but I'll bet the reason he was yanked after only two minutes is because he shoots too much....but then why does Lowery leave Bone in the game?

Josh Bone is 12-58 (20.6%) over the past 6 games, while SIU is going 1-5....
and yet he still plays 20-30 minutes a game!!!

I hate to bring this up but I said before the start of the season that Tatum and Young would be hard to replace as they could score 20 points on any given night and SIU had no one to replace them ; if Mullens looks to score then they are really in trouble as he is not a great outside shooter and Falker and Shaw can only carry them so far;they seem to be getting called for a lot of fouls which they seemed to avoid during the valley season. I think that a number of teams have a chance at winning the conference title this season as I do not see 1 team that stands out as a clear favorite.

Real Fan, I said the same thing months ago on several threads and most thought I was crazy. Well, I am crazy, but I think I was right about SIU...

Sorry, but the only real reason for this post is because I really like this "smiley"
