In a victory for midmajors everywhere, it is being reported by Scout.com that one of the top uncommitted 2007 players in the country, 5-star Herb Pope of Aliquippa Pennsylvania, today signed with Reggie Theus and the New Mexico State Aggies of the Sun Belt Conference.
Pope was heavily recruited by many top 20 programs, including Maryland, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, and Texas which were in contention until today. He was also recruited by Illinois, Memphis, Cincinnati, Kansas State, and Louisville.

Scout has him as the #17 best player of the class of 2007--

Could there be something that's beneath the surface here?
How come I keep reading on other message boards that there's some reason Pope still had not signed on the last day of the signing period of his senior year?
Pope bounced around from one high school to another and coaches didn't like the kid.
I guess nobody really knows, but here are some comments about the kid.

and this comment:
"One guy unlikely to join them, however, is Herb Pope, a high-level prospect with high-level baggage. At one point, it seemed certain Pope would land at Kansas State, but his questionable behavior this summer has turned-off many would-be suitors. The 6-9 forward might find his options limited come signing day, which would be an odd position for a Top 20 national recruit."
