Mike Burwell wore No. 23 for South Amboy's Cardinal McCarrick High. Is that because of Michael Jordan?
"No, that's because of me," he says.
It was good to be Mike Burwell this winter. He went from being a 20-point scorer as a junior last season to a 28-point producer and New Jersey's top scorer this season.
That the smooth, 6-foot-6, 190-pound shooting guard did not accept a college scholarship before his senior season figures to pay off. With his stock rising, interest in him picked up considerably. He has a handful of offers and plans to make his decision in time for the signing period in April.
Armed with a grade point average of over 3.0, the future biology major is NJ Hoops' top-ranked unsigned senior, at No. 15. NJ Hoops went one-on-one with Burwell in the continuing "Five Questions" series:

Can you discuss the success of your senior season? It was a real big year, but I don't take all the credit for that. The team really made it possible, as well as me working hard all summer and putting everything I've worked for into play.
In what ways do you think you made yourself a better scorer?I went to a shooting academy (The Basketball Shooting Academy in Edison), shooting a thousand shots a day (last summer). And working on just the moves to the basket and working on creating on my own because last year I relied on them giving me the ball. This year, I really wanted to create on my own off the dribble.
Right now where do you stand on scholarship offers?I've received them from Bradley, the University of San Diego, Old Dominion, St. Bonaventure, South Florida, Fordham and a couple other schools.
What's going to make up your mind on a school?I really want to go visit these schools. There's three things that I look for – social life, background in basketball – you know, a great basketball university – and the academics.
Is there one memory from your high school career that will stick in your mind the most?Winning the (2008 Middlesex) county championship, experiencing that with my whole team and my coaches, being able to leave with something to look back on, something that I've accomplished.

Mike Burwell's outstanding senior season for Cardinal McCarrick is over. Belmar's St. Rose pulled an upset in the NJSIAA Non-Public B South semifinals, using a game-ending 9-0 run for a 56-49 win over the Eagles Monday night in South Amboy.

Burwell's dunk off an alley-oop with 3:27 left gave Cardinal McCarrick a 49-47 lead, but St. Rose dominated the rest of the way, with junior guard Joey Quinn scoring six straight points to spark the run. He finished with 14 points.

Teammates Sean McPaul and Brian Poppert had 16 and 12 points, respectively, for St. Rose (19-8).

For Cardinal McCarrick (24-5), Burwell finished with 19 points, followed by Julio Rosario with 15.

I think BU fits those request....Basketball town and tradition.....basketball school.....academics and lets get this kid on campus for a visit! :D

DC....march 6 2008....its at the top of the page! Sounds a little like AW....must not have been as bad since he played though!

No, for some reason, he is not in Scout's or Rivals' database.

He lead the state of New Jersey in scoring, but apparently is a little under the radar.

sorry i'm a little confused because according to the scholarship grid how can we fit anyone else on our roster for next year..how can we be recruiting mike burwell, antiquawn beckham, and larry anderson. I'm assuming I'm missing something here...

I'd gladly give up a scholarship for a shot at one of these guys..

we all assume 1st to committ gets the last ride.....anything other than that just means that they already know someone will leave.....someone always does!

We currently have one scholarship available for 2008-2009.

well if we have one left..from the looks of things i'd say i'd be happiest with Burwell over Anderson and Beckham

beckham..6'4" 180 lb SG
anderson..6'5" 200 lb SF
burwell..6'7" 205 lb SG

this site says he's 6'7" 205 lb...that sounds better so i went with that haha http://www.maxpreps.com/FanPages/StateMain.mxp/NewJersey

I'd rather have the big SG that could match up against big guys on defense like Crouch could do pretty well and on the offensive side could be a 2 or 3 man. Looks like beckham could purely be a 2 and Anderson isn't even as big as Burwell. I'd be happy with Burwell. He seems more dynamic.

And maybe we could still get Anderson if somebody leaves..although I'd rather have beckham over anderson if we do end up getting Rodney Williams for the 2009 class...

I say time for a visit!

Sounds like he has already been here.

"As his season progressed, so did the attention from colleges. Burwell has scheduled four official recruiting visits, beginning with Bradley this weekend. He will also visit Old Dominion, St. Bonaventure and San Diego and is keeping his options open for a possible fifth visit."
