Not trying to start an argument...but as far as the top college programs -- all have recruited and landed plenty of blue-chippers, the cream of the crop
when it comes to the high schoolers that they land to play at their schools....
and all have put plenty of players into the NBA...but........


someone tell me which Duke players have gone on to HOF careers in the NBA or at least solid, respectable careers........

I don't deny that the Bulls are waiting patiently for Carlos Boozer, and guys like Elton Brand, Grant Hill, Johnny Dawkins, Luol Deng, and Christian Laettner all had long or decent careers...but who are the absolute BEST pro players out of Duke???



For comparison, North Carolina has produced at least five HOF'ers, including Michael Jordan, James Worthy, McAdoo, Cunningham...

And -- of course UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas, and even Valley schools have produced NBA HOF'ers, but who is Duke's top NBA player?
Even Valley schools have produced HOF'ers and guys with over 20K career points

We have retired four jerseys this decade. There will be more names added to the Hall of Fame in the years to come.

As for NBA success. There aren't any legends, but when you compare our alumni performance over the past 25 years (essentially our entire tenure as an elite program) we compare quite favorably with the rest of the blue bloods. See link: http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2010/10/superstar-u/
While the methodology behind this list is flawed, it still makes an interesting point regarding perception vs. reality when it comes to Dukies in the NBA.
 
I can't stand Duke but you do have to admire what they do. Compared to other elite programs Coack K does a tremendous job of actually recruiting student athletes. Players like Kyle Singler will most likely not go on to have a hall of fame NBA career but he stayed all 4 years, already has one championship and a very good chance at another.

I think we can all agree that Duke does it in a way we wish our schools could. When you have the Calipari's and Huggins's of the world, who cares that none of Coach K's players have gone on to hall of fame careers.

Interesting that article asks the question "Which NCAA program is best at producing NBA stars?" then their methods only count current NBA players. So a school like North Carolina gets no credit for players like Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins since they have retired. North Carolina still comes in 5th based on their current NBA stars Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison.
OTOH, Wake Forest, not exactly known as an NBA star-player factory, finishes 2nd in their ranking only because they have produced exactly 2 NBA stars, Tim Duncan and Chris Paul, who happen to be recent enough they are still active.

Yeah it is definitely incomplete and subjective. The term star is defined loosely and arbitrarily. But it does serve to challenge a perception that has little basis in fact: namely that Coach K's players don't succeed at the next level. And shows that the perception of programs like Carolina or Kansas etc. as star factories is perhaps a bit outdated.

You are 100% correct , Duke gets team players and may not have the NBA super stars but produce great college team players and good student athletes
 
DUKE - In the upper echlons of the NCAA, one of the best examples of a coaching staff that takes good, but not 'great' or 'elite', players and turns them into ''great' or 'elite' college teams.

Michigan State, under Tom Izzo, is also part of this discussion.

I am embarrassed that when mentioning the slime of the NCAA, I did not mention Izzo along with Coach K. You are absolutely correct.

Just wondering, you can't stand Duke but then you admire most things they do. Why can't you stand them?

I guess I dont count 12 seasons ago as lately, but if you do then yes, you successfully compiled a list of every early exit in the history of the program. Also worth noting is the fact that Williams, Boozer, Dunleavy, Randolph, and Henderson all graduated, either before they left or shortly after. Thus of the 10 you have listed, 5 stayed three years and obtained a degree. So 10 players all time. 4 since 2002. 2 since 2005.
 
The thing that always strikes me about Duke is how the pieces seem to fit so well together to truly form a cohesive team. Coach K, in addition to have high standards when it comes to recruiting good students as well as athletes, always seems to recruit to build the best team. Other programs at that level seem to stockpile as much high-rated, NBA-ready talent as possible without worrying too much how it will all fit together which often shows in the results.

That's why I find it to believe some don't like Duke. I could care less about Dick V being the announcer and I'm glad Duke is on ESPN so much. Like to watch college basketball and it can't get much better than that.
