I love this matchup. This will surely get a TV slot because of the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network's bias toward eastern teams. Plus, I think the travel issues will be a little more convenient for a trip to Richmond than to Reno.

Sounds like a good matchup. It also seems like they play our style, so it ought to be a brawl. Can't wait to watch it on the Ocho.

Appalachian St by 3 at home

This is interesting. Looks like they feature good gaurd play, and are pretty effective from 3 point land. The "team capsule" says they lead their conference in offensive rebounds. We all know we are "rebound challenged" sometimes. Zach needs to be a MONSTER in this game. Without a player over 6-7 that plays significant minutes, we need him to dominate the middle. We alson need to keep the turnovers down, as they press alot. I like our chances with this team. I know their guards are their strength, but I would put our guards up against anybody. Just dont know how excited I am about them coming here next year.

A little rumor starting on the Creighton board that they may be matched up with Appalachian State.
But no other Valley message board has much discussion going on.

Not a bad match up for BU.

I wanted to give a little info about the VCU/Richmond area. A few years ago I stayed in a hotel (the Radisson about 8 blocks from the VCU campus). The area around VCU is not the best area on the planet. If you go be extremely careful. I had my car broke into while I was working there. The campus is not a bad looking campus but there are not to many places to eat or visit near the campus.

If one has time go more downtown many great places in that area but it is a good 5-10 minute drive.

The arena is very small as it is the center piece of their athletic complex. I would guess it is very much like what we are trying to build on campus.

Again I might be overally cautious because of my experience there but the area is very run down near the school and I would be feel safe there anytime in the evening.

Their three losses come against some quality mid-majors that all have a shot of a win or two in the NCAA tourney, especially Xavier. Appalachian St could be this year's Northwestern St, and I mean that in all seriousness.

While no real meaty BCS teams exist on their schedule, I am impressed by their two recent road victories at George Mason and at Drexel. Drexel of course has wins at Villanova and #23 Syracuse! Therefore, VCU will be a big test for us.

I am very happy with this matchup as this is the best team I am pretty confident we can beat, now ESPN better put this on TV.

Looks like a good matchup; our guys need to remember how important this game is as it could determine the type of postseason bid they receive.

Yes

Yes

This was the game I was hoping for :D This should be a rare chance for me to see the Braves live -- just a short 3-4 hour drive (of course Nevada would have been a better game for the team).

Tickets

Tickets

What is my best option to get tickets in advance for this game? I am interested in getting the best seats available (mid-court, lower bowl area. Not nosebleed seats  )

I know it sucks but the Sigel Center box office does not let people choose their own seats, it is randomly assigned on a best available basis. YOu might have better luck trying to get a ticket out of the Bradey allotment. The box office to VCU is 804 828 rams if you would like to try there.

So I'm thinking it's been more than a few years since you've been to Broad Street. You have 2 parking decks right by the SC incase you're afraid of the city atmosphere. You have Five Guys, Cold Stone, Great Wraps, Xtreme Pizza, and the Village Cafe all very close to the SC. (All built within the last 3 years except the Village). Also within reasonable distance and worth finding are Bandito's and Mulligans (two sports bars). If any other VCU people know other spots fill 'em in, what do I know, I'm just a commuter! It will be weird rooting AGAINST you guys after cheering so hard for you in tournaments! Good luck!

Merc & rowdy, feel free if you have the time to give us a short blurb on your team, what's good, what's not, and how you feel your chances are this year.
What has been your best win so far?
(and please don't ell us Houston, as we think they are way overrated)

a couple of things from a VCU fan...

1) Our team: We are a guard dominated team I'd say similar to UAB a couple of years ago. Fast paced with a lot of pressing (which may not always cause turnovers, but does tend to tire teams out...due to this, I'd say we're definetly a "second half" team).

-Strengths: guard play, deffense, and the 3 ball.
Key players: Seniors BA Walker and Jessie-Pellot Rosa + Soph. Eric Maynor. BA can catch fire from 3 point land but is just a solid player in every phase of the game. Jessie can play inside and out, incredibly strong so he can bang around, but also a deep threat. Eric Maynor is our "breakout" point guard, one of the best in the conference (IMO, but his numbers tell the story) and is somewhat of a Chris Paul clone. We've also got a Junior Jamal Shuler coming off the bench who can absolutelly light it up from behind the arch. We lost perhaps our best player Nick George to graduation last year, but we've become a little less "Lakers" and a little more "Pistons" with the addition of Coach Grant (INCREDIBLE coach)..a huge upgrade (IMO) over Jeff Capel who left for Oklahoma. With that came a much larger role for Eric Maynor. The Siegel Center has also been a nightmare for visiting teams (especially TV games) and has given the Rams one of the best home winning %s in the country.

-Weeknesses: interior D, especially against big men who can score + our press if broken can create a lot of open shots. On offense our big men have been unpredictable offensivelly, but we have a nice Arizona State transfer, Wil Fameni, who can play some smart ball, plus our most athletic player Michael Anderson who is often VERY unpredictable.

As far as Richmond goes I absolutely LOVE this city. I'm a student (all be it an old one at 27) and I've lived in Richmond's historic "Fan" neighborhood for quite a while now. The Siegel Center is located on the edge of Campus and backs up to the "up and coming" Carver neighborhood. We are obviouslly a city school..and like most urban campuses...you get a mix of all different incomes in the area. VCU has recently become the largest school in VA (30,000+ students) and with that and the University of Richmond..VCU's Fan neighborhood has a mix of students and very high income residents (If you were to buy a house here it would cost you around $500,000 to own in the Fan, which connects to VCU's campus..but there are many million $+ homes right one campus). VCU also has buildings on Franklin St which turns into historic Monument Ave.

If anyone has any questions about where to stay, eat, go etc...I'd be more than happy to answer them (send me a private message). I live downtown so I'd be more than welcome to provide anyone with info on the city to make your stay a great experience (I sound like an advertisement right now I know). Anyway, I've been to a lot of great cities and Richmond happens to be one of my favorite spots, so I'm all about promoting it and showing people how great it can be. The downtown area is rather small but is a great place to live/stay if you do it right.

can't wait to play you guys! Good luck...sorta

Actually no Ram it was 2 1/2 years ago. And if they have cleaned up the area then that is great and I hope that Richmond did, but if not then I stick by what I said and that it is a rough area. But Richmond was an ok city other then what I encountered in the VCU area.

Heh. From NattyMat's description, it sounds like we're facing some parallel world Bradley team. Or are we the parallel world VCU? :)
