a couple of things from a VCU fan...
1) Our team: We are a guard dominated team I'd say similar to UAB a couple of years ago. Fast paced with a lot of pressing (which may not always cause turnovers, but does tend to tire teams out...due to this, I'd say we're definetly a "second half" team).
-Strengths: guard play, deffense, and the 3 ball.
Key players: Seniors BA Walker and Jessie-Pellot Rosa + Soph. Eric Maynor. BA can catch fire from 3 point land but is just a solid player in every phase of the game. Jessie can play inside and out, incredibly strong so he can bang around, but also a deep threat. Eric Maynor is our "breakout" point guard, one of the best in the conference (IMO, but his numbers tell the story) and is somewhat of a Chris Paul clone. We've also got a Junior Jamal Shuler coming off the bench who can absolutelly light it up from behind the arch. We lost perhaps our best player Nick George to graduation last year, but we've become a little less "Lakers" and a little more "Pistons" with the addition of Coach Grant (INCREDIBLE coach)..a huge upgrade (IMO) over Jeff Capel who left for Oklahoma. With that came a much larger role for Eric Maynor. The Siegel Center has also been a nightmare for visiting teams (especially TV games) and has given the Rams one of the best home winning %s in the country.
-Weeknesses: interior D, especially against big men who can score + our press if broken can create a lot of open shots. On offense our big men have been unpredictable offensivelly, but we have a nice Arizona State transfer, Wil Fameni, who can play some smart ball, plus our most athletic player Michael Anderson who is often VERY unpredictable.
As far as Richmond goes I absolutely LOVE this city. I'm a student (all be it an old one at 27) and I've lived in Richmond's historic "Fan" neighborhood for quite a while now. The Siegel Center is located on the edge of Campus and backs up to the "up and coming" Carver neighborhood. We are obviouslly a city school..and like most urban campuses...you get a mix of all different incomes in the area. VCU has recently become the largest school in VA (30,000+ students) and with that and the University of Richmond..VCU's Fan neighborhood has a mix of students and very high income residents (If you were to buy a house here it would cost you around $500,000 to own in the Fan, which connects to VCU's campus..but there are many million $+ homes right one campus). VCU also has buildings on Franklin St which turns into historic Monument Ave.
If anyone has any questions about where to stay, eat, go etc...I'd be more than happy to answer them (send me a private message). I live downtown so I'd be more than welcome to provide anyone with info on the city to make your stay a great experience (I sound like an advertisement right now I know). Anyway, I've been to a lot of great cities and Richmond happens to be one of my favorite spots, so I'm all about promoting it and showing people how great it can be. The downtown area is rather small but is a great place to live/stay if you do it right.
can't wait to play you guys! Good luck...sorta
