Jeff Jordan leaves Illinois ... again

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Jeff Jordan's on-again, off-again basketball career at Illinois is over.

Michael Jordan's eldest son has been given his release to transfer to another school. Illinois spokesman Derrick Burson said Friday that Jordan is exploring options elsewhere but hasn't announced where he will go or whether he plans to play basketball in what will be his senior season.

The release is required by the NCAA if a student wants to leave to play at another school.

Illinois coach Bruce Weber called Jordan "an important part of our team."

Jordan left the Illini last June but changed his mind and rejoined the team for his junior season. He appeared in 92 career games and averaged 13.8 minutes per game last season as Illinois wound up in the NIT.

Jeff Jordan's career scoring average is 1.2 ppg.
He played 25 minutes against Bradley last November, a career high at that time and still his 2nd highest minute total, and scored 4 points.

Jeffrey Jordan was more suited to play at a midmajor school. Why he stayed at Illinois as a reserve is hard to understand. It will be interesting to see where he transfers to play the last year of his career- maybe Central Florida where brother Marcus plays? Or ISU, who goes after every nearly transfer. :) or maybe Division 2 so he wouldn't have to sit out a year?

Sometimes I liked him....but sometimes I yelled my head off at him.....I do know that there is no room in the lineup for him at all now......good luck JJ

Would he have to sit out if he went back Division-I? I thought if you didn't receive scholarship aid at your previous institution that you would be immediately eligible.

Jeff Jordan got scholarship aid only in his 2nd semester of his soph year, then was NOT under scholarship his junior year...

and nope -- if he transfers to another D-I then he will have to sit out a year --- this is why Ryan Thornton went to a D-II....and you cannot find a single example of a walk on kid transferring from one D-I to another who doesn't have to sit out, unless it is via some other mechanism such as already being a grad student, the hardship waiver (like Jake Kelly), or the discontinuation of the spot (like UNI baseball).

See rule 14.5..the only exception is if while he attended the first institution, he was never recruited, never rostered, never played, AND never received a financial aid offer...
In other words..if he was never in any stretch of the imagination an athlete or a team member, then he can transfer without penalty...(14.5.5.2.10.1)
