Matt Roth excited about Indiana hiring Tom Crean

I honestly dont care too much about Roth going or not going to BU. What I mean is I dont consider him a make or break recruit.

However, I just don't understand how you don't decommitt after everthing that has happened. It is obvious that IU is going nowhere for at least Matt's first 2 or 3 years with ZERO starters from this years team returning and possibly being banned from post season play.

The plus side for him is that he will get some pt or sure next year I would think and now he does have a proven coach that can win.

There has to be some programs that are in a better state than IU right now that could offer him some pt in his first year and at least have a chance of making it somewhere in the next few years.

Well, this can go 1 of 2 ways for Roth. He will either get a lot of PT early on and Crean will try to turn him into a Travis Diener-type, or Crean will run him off because he didn't recruit him. Time will tell.

I know it's a little selfish, as I hope Matt has a great college career, but I really wish we could have seen Matt in a BU uniform next season. It is always disappointing to lose local recruits, whether they're make or break or not.

Well since Crean hasnt recruited anyone to IU as of now i think he will have to give him a shot at first.

I wonder if any of his Marquette recruits will try to follow him over him. Crean should have plenty of scholarships to fill with gordan most likely gone and the two players that were dismissed. BTW, since it wasnt Crean who dismissed those two players, any chance of them returning or was it a IU decision in general?

If Crean can get this team in the top half of the big ten I would consider it a success for his first year don't ya think?

Well, from what I understand, those two players never showed up and refused to run the laps they were supposed to run as punishment, so Dakich kicked them off the team. I believe Crean could reinstate them, but in doing so, it would be a huge statement about the kind of discipline policy that goes on at Indiana. I doubt Crean would put up with that.

Mark my words, Indiana will not make the tournament next year. If not for a post season ban, the overall loss of talent. I'd expect Gordo to leave, as I'd assume he would want to jump the sinking ship. Bassett and Ellis were two of their better returning players, and they're gone. White graduated, as did Stemler. Maybe MR will start next year?

I would consider that an incredible feat, assuming Gordon leaves and Bassett and Ellis aren't reinstated. There's also rumors of Jordan Crawford transferring, but let's assume he's staying for now. Here's what they'll have for next season:

PG Jordan Crawford So.
SG Matt Roth Fr.
SF Brandon McGee So.
PF Kyle Taber Sr.
C DeAndre Thomas Sr.

PG Brett Finkelmeier So. (walk-on)
PF Tom Pritchard Fr.
C Eli Holman RS-Fr.

That's a terrible team - maybe they'd manage to finish ahead of one or two Big Ten teams if things go well. If Crawford leaves, I think that's easily the worst team in the conference.

The positive for Roth is that he'll get tons of playing time from the get-go on a major conference team, and I'd expect that Crean will get them back to respectability within couple years. Heck, he'll probably get more playing time at Indiana next year than he would have at Bradley - here he'd likely be behind Maniscalco, Warren, and Dunson at the start of the season, and would be competing for the remaining minutes with McCain and Roberts. At Indiana, they'll need him to play 35 minutes a game.

Give the kid credit, he is staying by his commitment and values! Thats more than most do anymore! Sounds like you would be inclued in that group too.
As for liking to see him at BU, lets get serious, are you telling everyone with his 3 point shooting and range that he would not of been taylor make for JL's 3-4 guard system. I would of liked to seen him playing with SM & AW. Give me a break! Good Luck to the kid! As for you stop worring about him, he doesn't need your kind guiding him!! He will do great!!!

Crean never recruited Roth when he was at Marquette, what if he told Matt it would be a good idea to look elsewhere?

Maybe one of the best things to happen to Roth is all of this turmoil. He will get an immediate opportunity to play, where when he signed many were speculating he might not see any court time for quite awhile.

Also, and this is just an observation, I dont believe Roth ever was a must get for Sampson, I think he would have had no problems continuing to recruit right over Roth. Crean might do the samething but Roth will get the chance immediately to play more minutes for Crean then he probably would have for Sampson and by sticking with Indiana, that is only scoring him points in both the minds and hearts of Indiana fans.

I admire he stuck to his commitment and in the long run that decision will pay off for Roth.

I totally agree with all you have said! I don't Sampson was the reason Matt was going to IU but a life time dream of the kid. Crean will give Matt a good chance to play.

I talked to someone who knows Crean and many other college coaches.
He thinks Crean will be successful at Indiana, and sooner rather than later. From what I hear, nobody works harder than Crean.

Well then. I predict IU to win the Big Ten!

Better yet - I predict they win the National Title.

Houston--

I said exactly the same thing months ago. . .Roth is the kind of player that a coach will come in, build around for a year or two until he gets more of his key players in, but will serve as the glue that stabilizes the program right away.

And therefore Crean will likely do everything he can to keep him there.
