Mississippi State player arrested

Possesion of a controlled substance?? And cops don't just think, "hmm that driver looks like his license is suspended, I'll pull him over..." Thay have to have a reason. I'd say this is more than is being reported.

Sounds like a sweep up job to me...

1 pill of Xanax? Why? I agree there's a big broom at work here.

Here's what I found on Xanax.

Xanax is the brand name for the tranquilizer Alprazolam, an antianxiety (anxiolytic) and antipanic drug. Xanax is a benzodiazepine (a class of drugs that slow down the central nervous system.)

Xanax is used primarily as short-term treatment of mild to moderate anxiety, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and nervous tension.

Xanax may also be used to treat:

panic disorders / panic attacks
activity depression
irritable bowel syndrome
anxiety due to a neurosis
symptoms of PMS (if extreme)
some cancer pains (given with various narcotics)
agoraphobia
essential tremor
ringing ears

Xanax should not be used to treat everyday stress or tension.

It is unclear if he will play Saturday.

Slater is the only senior on the team that plays any meaningful role, and as I noted in the other thread on this upcoming game, he did start Tuesday, but was completely ineffective and not a factor. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't pegged to start Saturday, but now the coach is faced with the decision of what to do.
Rightfully, the kid should be suspended as he clearly is in violation of the law, and as we all know from the Richard McBride chronicals, he needs to be disciplined.
Or is the Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury going to take the Bruce Pearl route of discipline and value only the kid's potential talent and not do a thing until the kid gets into more trouble, goes to jail, or until the press demands it?

I worked at an Inpatient Psych Unit and Xanax is a drug that let's you 'chill out' it is commonly sold on the 'black market' and we had to watch for patients hiding the medicine in their cheeks to sell after they got out.

In case you guys don't notice, many message boards (ours included) are inundated with people who sign up for the sole purpose of posting ads and links to web site that sell stuff, similar to the unsolicited e mails you all get.
Many of those "spam posters" as we call them are trying to peddle Xanax (along with investment tips, gambling links, and porn) as a recreational drug, just like they used Valium 15 years ago.
We delete those guys as fast as they sign up but the fact that so mant peddle Xanax, shows there must be a market for it.

The kid needs to be soundly and decisively disciplined as an example to the others on the team....so let's see if the coach does it.
I'd say 50-50, as most coaches value the wins and their job more than the actual right thing to do.

Welcome MSDawg......what can you tell us about your team? :?

Jamont Gordon G/F 6-4 225 So. -Plays point your biggest headache.
Charles Rhodes F/C 6-8 240 Jr. - Very good in the paint. Dunks a lot.
Richard Delk G/F 6-4 175 - Strong defender and 3 point shooter
Barry Stewart G 6-2 165 Fr. - Strong defender and accurate FT shooter.
Ben Hansbrough G 6-3 200 Fr. Developing point guard and also good 3 point shooter great hustle
Dietric Slater G/F 6-3 200 Sr. Hardest player on the team. Get a lot of lose balls.
Reginald Delk G/F 6-4 175 So. Strong defender
Bernard Rimmer F 6-8 195 So. Developing center.
Jarvis Varnado F/C 6-9 195 Fr. The shot blocker
Vernon Goodridge C/F 6-9 225 So. Developing center.
Piotr Stelmach F 6-9 240 Sr. Out most of the season with injuries.

The is no loss of intensity with the freshmen off the bench.

I see a lot of parallels between our team and MS, per MStateDawg's description. In fact, as I read, I was like "6-in-taller Ruff, ZA, Will-n-JC, Will-n-JC, hm-maybe-ADub, JJ, DA-last-night, Matt..." etc.

Looks like their bench is a little deeper than ours. I hope everyone's healthy Saturday. JC looked like he was favoring his knee towards the end of the night after hitting the floor a time or two... but as there was no press release today proclaiming him sadly broken again, I have faith he was just being careful.

We all know that ZA will be fresh! :-o :?

Just so long as he places his gum in the proper receptacle ... or whatever Jimmy was grumpy about last night.

Perhaps he was just trying to teach ZA an important lesson: DON'T LITTER!

Funny you say that... I didn't see it last night... but I have seen ZA throw his gum as he heads to the bench ticked/disappointed/mad.

Tornado, it's Stark-vegas! The cops will arrest you for any reason they can think of. Just ask Johnny Cash. He got arrested for picking flowers in front of the courthouse. He even wrote a song about it.

13--
the kid was driving on a suspended license....
maybe someone can find out why the college senior who's getting his tuition
and all his expenses paid for by the fine folks of Mississippi so he can play a game,
had his license suspended in the first place....
somehow I suspect something more in this whole story...

Here's the latest story...
"(Coach) Stansbury downplays Slater's arrest"

"Dietric Slater will play in Saturday's NIT second-round game against Bradley, and that news of his arrest was overblown."

Aside from the obvious legal situation, I'm glad they are playing BU at full strength. I always hate when a team is missing a player for any reason this time of year. He's already served as a distraction for his team and if he's gone, it would make game planning for them more difficult, so hopefully he's there and BU can just go to Starkville and whoop them, then head to Florida.

Here is the stat line from Mississippi State's NIT win over 200 RPI Mississippi Valley State (who by the way, at RPI 200 and SOS 311 had absolutely no right being in any post season tournament).

Their weakling opponent Mississippi Valley State went 0-6 vs. teams ranked 1-100 in RPI and 1-10 against teams ranked 1-200.
That means they were a whopping 17-5 against teams whose RPI was over 200! How the heck they even found 22 teams with RPI's above 200 is beyond belief! Their non-conference record was 5-10! and their best "quality" win was over RPI 168 Jackson State. The second best was over RPI 235 McNeese State.

Well, here's Slater's stat line...
31 minutes played, 1-9, 0-2 from 3-pt, 1-2 on FTs, 3 points.
I am actually glad they are going to let the guy play.
He's a 25% 3-point shooter, but still launches more than two a game.
