Missouri Valley Conference announces change to Arch Madness

some quotes from Brian Wardle hint that he does not like the new format for Arch Madness. He's careful about being critical but says:

"Honestly, every format, every tournament is a challenge," Bradley head coach Brian Wardle said. "It's hard. Our league prioritized certain things now. I don't think anyone can make judgments right now and I'm not going to rush to judgment. When I was at Green Bay we didn't play for 10 days with that double-bye and got beat," Wardle said. "It's always a challenge no matter what the format. You have to win games."

What if there's a lot of parity and 3 or even 4 teams tie for the regular season lead at 12-8, then you have to go to either a very complicated tiebreaker or maybe even to the NET and then two teams luck out and two have to play extra games.

Commissioner Jackson says:
"There will be 18 games between the combined tournaments, and the league plans to sell an all-access ticket package that covers all those games.
...
Operating both tournaments in the same week at the same site is a substantial cost savings for the league, something that is critical for schools trying to fund teams in multiple men's and women's sports programs.
"We're excited about where we're headed, what we're doing and why," Jackson said.
"We're going to have men's basketball fans who are going to become women's basketball fans,
and women's basketball fans who are going to become men's basketball fans."

...so trying to force the MBB fans to become WBB fans?
The forcing part plus I guarantee all tour. passes will be much higher. My thought on this is they are going to lose more fans of this Tour.

I understand combining both tournaments as a way to save money but if they think it's going to create more interest in woman's basketball at this level then they're smoking something awfully bad at the Valley office. How they set up the price structure will go a long way in determining if I'll make by 31st straight Arch Madness/ Very skeptical.

A smart move, and one that any private business would have made, would have been to do a marketing study (a poll) of a bunch of dedicated fans from every school to see what the prevailing opinions are. But this seems to be pushed out without regard to fans' opinions. As I've said already, I believe they are making a mistake. If the MVC was smart, they'd drop this now or put it off another year and do a deeper analysis including what fans think, before it's too late.

I've been trying to think of an analogy to explain how I feel about the changes in the MVC tourney. What it seems like is when I was in high school and I finally landed a date with a hot girl, but my mother made me take my little sister on the date with me. :sneaky:

Not only do I not want to pay more just to have access to the womens tourney games, but if its not the BU women playing, you might have to PAY ME to get me to attend one of the games. It simply doesn't interest me.
