New Women's Head Coach

I like Mike, and it seems all the current players like him and were pulling for him to get the job. This seems to be a completely opposite approach by our administration in filling the head coaching positions, to go with someone from within, despite limited coaching experience. I think it's great to see someone like Mike be given a chance to show what he can do.

A New Day for Bradley Women's Basketball

Time for the Bradley Brave Nation to rally behind Coach Brooks and give him our total support. He has convinced the BU powers that he can do the job and the players believe in him. That's overcoming the two immediate hurdles. The Lady Braves have talented players that can accomplish their goals and start a new leagcy. Now WE (and that includes the students) need to fill the seats at Renaissance and show our support. Playing before 300-400 each game did not and will not do the job.

That is a good point and if people went to the games they might just be surprised that they are very entertaining. The girls play real hard fundamental BB

That is exactly how I feel. But it doesn't mean he can't succeed. He is a different person and could have more success than Paula.

I know Coach Brooks pretty well and while I have a lot of respect for Coach Buscher, I was really pulling for Brooks to get a chance to take the reigns. He is intense and will get the best out of the players. He already has the players respect and it will make for an easy transition IMO. And he did have some head coaching experience as co-head coach at Central Methodist.

Here's something else that I don't understand....there was never a single mention anywhere of any candidate....surely there were some other candidates besides promoting Brooks - right??? It can't be that Brooks was promoted in the absence of anyone else wanting the job -- :?:

And yet as we saw with our men's basketball process & search and as we see in every D-I situation -- there are ALWAYS other names known and mentioned...
It is impossible to keep them all hidden - people see them on campus, they know who is interested, even the other candidates who come for interviews ALWAYS want their name known for their own purposes - it raises their stock - and even sets them up for other positions and opening...
we saw that with Dane Fife - who kinda went overboard to make sure everyone knew he was looking even tho he was already the head coach somewhere else.

So -- how come we never heard a single mention of any other name in the BU women's process? Anyone know??

What's not to understand?
Bradley conducted their search in a professional manner, keeping the interests of the University and the individuals involved out of the public and media. A positive indication that they wanted to ensure the privacy of the process and not offer a stage for "second guessing".
Coach Brooks was selected because he met the criteria set by the administration and offers the potential sought to lead the Lady Braves to even greater success than in the past. ENOUGH SAID!
 
but didn't they do the SAME for the men's coach & (in your words)...
"conducted their search in a professional manner, keeping the interests of the University and the individuals involved out of the public and media."??

Of course they did, and yet at least 8-10 different names emerged from various sources such as being spotted on campus and being known to be seeking the job.
Many candidates who would be interested in another position would even want their names mentioned - as I said - Dane Fife sure did....and Monson talked with the press, as did Scott Sutton & Rob Jeter - LINK...(many using the exact same phrases such "not being a good fit"...)

You make a good point tornado but the strategy of getting a job in the men's game versus women's game is totally different. The men's game is big business... There's a ton of money to be made by coaches who can parlay media reports into higher pay or contract extensions at their current university. Hence, the numerous leaking of names (probably by the candidate or their agent). In the women's game -- particularly at Bradley's level -- there is already so little interest that it probably wouldn't matter. Especially since the other 2 rumored coaching candidates were from the small time -- D2 and D3 -- where leaking their name probably would not have mattered to them.
 
I know of one person who "applied" and who was told he was a top candidate, and someone else on a different board says he knows of two others...
so those names are known - just not known openly but the process did not use a search firm (as the men's process did)...and the interviews and decision making was done very confidentially and not much was ever noted in the media.

Women's college basketball is not Men's college basketball. Most people couldn't care less about women's basketball unless you are Tennessee, UCONN, Baylor, etc. Even if the other candidates names were out there, it wouldn't have made a difference because no one would care.

Why can't we just accept the fact that Bradley hired who they thought was best and let it end there? Why is the need to question who was hired? Unless you were sitting in on the interviews then you wouldn't actually know what happened for them to hire Brooks. Leave it be.

I think the discussion centers around the administration seemingly changing their general hiring philosophy with the hire. Perfectly legitimate discussion topic. Seems like some people are being abnormally defensive.
 
My 2 cents is that time of the year was a significant part of the issue. As I understand it, from a pretty good source, current head coaches were very sensitive to the fact that it was July and didn't want their names attached to the job if they weren't going to get it.
 
Personally I like the concept of promoting from within -- many of the big schools do it - so if we have good people hired then why not keep them, develop them, and promote them?
BUT -- for the sake of MB then just do it right away and make it clear he was the slam dunk favorite...

Now there are a couple NCAA job postings for assistant coaches for Mike Brooks...
