OJ Mayo in the News Again

tornado

This time for accepting free NBA tickets from "his friends" in the NBA....so he and his "girlfriend" could sit at courtside at a Lakers game.

What I find really, really flagrantly silly is the suggestion that mid-court, courtside tickets at a Lakers home game are worth "$230 each".
That's absolutely insane, as those seats, had he made even the most meager attempt to sell them anywhere (ebay, newspaper ad, outside the arena, etc..)
would have easily brought 3-5 times that much, maybe even up to $2000 each! (he got two tickets)
Mayo admits this is NOT the first time he's gotten to go to NBA games for free, just because he knew someone....
Then the USC coach, Tim Floyd claims Mayo should not be punished since it is his fault (Floyd's)!@!! Now excuuuuuse me...since when does a coach have the ability to absolve the student athlete when he commits a violation???

Here's my take....this kid got an extra benefit of well over a couple thousand dollars in value.
This is way more value than Patrick O'Bryant received inadvertently, but Mayo's violation was fully intention and knowing.

Is there anyone that thinks the NCAA will see this as anything but a little, minor accidental issue? Had Patrick O'Bryant taken $2000 in freebies....recall the NCAA swooped down to suspend him for 8 games!!!!!!!
Can there be any doubt there IS a double standard.
The NCAA STILL has not commented on the $200,000 of extra benefits and freebies Reggie Bush got while in college at USC!!
That's been three years and running!

Reggie Bush and now OJ Mayo and who knows how many more USC players are getting extra benefits ; time for the NCAA to penalize them as they are breaking the rules just like Indiana .The schools that abide by the rules should be complaining to the NCAA until something is done to stop them from cheating.

I hope Mayo pays a heavy fine, though I'm not optomistic. It's rediculous becasue he had to know what he was doing was wrong. Sitting courtside for free ... what a spoiled $%#.

OJ Mayo receives no penalty and maintains complete eligibility by simply repaying the value of the tickets...astonishingly close to the amount that Will Franklin had to repay (Franklin subsequently was suspended for the first 6 games of the '05-'06 season). Once again, the rules do not apply to the BCS.

I feel exactly the same way, BB
this case isn't too far different from the POB and WF cases.
Mayo knew he was taking stuff of significant value, and even if he didn't the NCAA has already made it clear that NOT KNOWING is no excuse.
Sure, maybe those two tix had a face value of $460, but we all know they were clearly worth a couple thou.
Absolutely amazing how quickly and how completely OJ gets cleared on this when the whole forces of the NCAA investigative branch had to dig in Peoria before handing down punishment on POB & WF.
Did anyone remember, that Mayo had admitted to receiving other free tickets in the past as well?
Did they just sweep that one under the rug?

I guess I just couldn't resist.......

yesterday, USC lost big time to Washington State, 74-50.
OJ Mayo got his 15 shots (6-15, 1-3 from 3-pt), and scored his 14 points, but the rest of OJ's stat line is telling...

36 minutes, only 3 rebounds, zero assists, zero turnovers, four fouls, and Washington State's 3 starting guards went for 10, 13, and 17 points respectively plus 12 assists between them.

USC is leading #7 Stanford early on 22-16.........OJ hampered playing defense with 2 fouls early on.

I have a couple trivia question in regards to OJ Mayo...

I have never heard nor seen his real names in print and he's always called "OJ".
So what is his real name and what does the "OJ" stand for?
Also, I have read about his mother, but anything about his dad?

Here are the answers...........mouse over to read........

His real name is Ovinton J'Anthony Mayo and his dad is Kenny Ziegler
http://studentsports.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=493883

His dad has been in the news lately...
"Mayo's father, Kenny Ziegler, 36, recently was arrested and charged in Mayo's hometown of Huntington, W. Va., for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. Ziegler is being held in jail and it's not the first time he has been incarcerated.
Mayo said his father has been in and out of his life since he was 10, leaving his mother, Alisha, to raise him and his six brothers and sisters."
