Rick Majerus to take over at New Mexico?

With Utah wanting to dump Giacoletti I would think a more natural rumor would be Majerus to Utah, but what do I know.

Here's a funny article...

It's titled
"Some players consider leaving depending on hire"
http://www.abqtrib.com/news/2007/feb/27/mens-basketball-some-players-consider-leaving-depe/

So I guess New Mexico will lose all its talent if they fire McKay and get someone else?

Nope...60% of all their scoring comes from the guys who will have to return because they only have one year left, and like JR Giddens have already used up their transfer year.

The only players who might transfer are
"Ryan Kersten, freshman center Derek Oestreicher and freshman forward Sean Imadiyi"
who account for a total of about 6 points and zero rebounds between them!
All three of these guys weren't recurited by anyone else anyway and were lucky Ritchie McKay offered them a scholarship because otherwise they had no place else to go.
If they leave it will only give the new guy some more scholarships to go out and get some real D-I caliber players, something McKay hasn't done in the five years he's been there....except when he's lured them to transfer from another D-I school.

Which coach are you referring to? Coach Les or Coach Molinari?
I believe Coach Mo is still friends with McKay. I doubt that Les and KK give it much thought any more, but probably don't have much respect for what he did.

I don't wanna start a whole thing about the past, but I wasn't around Peoria/BU Basketball at the time, and I've heard it referenced a bunch of times, what happened, can I get a quick summary?

BUBraves06--
When Jim Les took over as coach of Bradley in April of 2002, several of the fine recruits Jim Molinari had landed left and transferred.
The very best remaining player, Danny Granger, a kid with NBA potential decided to stay but was disgruntled, and found the new coach and coaching system not fully to his liking.
After a couple highly publicized issues and outbursts, he left the team, and enrolled the next day at New Mexico and it was revealed the coaches at New Mexico (two of whom were ex-BU guys who were assistants under Molinari) had been calling Granger for months on the phone several dozens of times, in clear violation of NCAA rules against tampering with another school's players. The violations were at first denied and Coach McKay at New Mexico even held a couple public press conference and lied outright about what he knew to be true.
One of the local Albuquerque reporters obtained the cel phone records since the coaches were state employees, and proved beyond question that the New Mexico coaches not only made the numerous calls to Granger and his family but they were lying through their teeth about it.

BU asked the NCAA to rule on the issue but they handed down a ridiculously soft slap and allowed New Mexico to keep Granger even tho they had violated rules to land him.
The whole case showed that the bigger schools always get away with this crap and the smaller ones like BU get slapped hard even if their kids accidentally get an extra paycheck.
It is just one tiny but convincing piece of evidence the NCAA has a clear bias and favoritism towards the big schools and against the smaller guys, and it confirmed to the NCAA world that if you are a big school it's perfectly OK to cheat because you'll be allowed to get away with it.

Since I typed this whole thing out before I saw that tornado had responded, I thought I'd post it anyway. A little more of the history for you young fans----

Ritchie McKay was one of Jim Molinari's assistants when he came to Bradley in 1991-1992. He moved up through the coaching ranks and got the New Mexico job in 2002 at the same time Jim Les took over at Bradley. One of the conditions of Jim being offered the Bradley job was that he keep all the assistant who were here. But Duane Broussard (who played for Molinari and became an assistant after he finished his playing career) left voluntarily and resurfaced as an assistant under Ritchie McKay at New Mexico.
Unbeknown to Les and the others at Bradley, after Broussard moved to New Mexico, he kept in touch with many of the Bradley players that stayed to play under Jim Les. Though he first denied talking with Granger, the Albuquerque Tribune obtained cellphone records of Broussard documenting dozens of call to Granger, his father, and his former high school coach in Louisiana. Those calls undoubtedly lead Granger to quit the Bradley team in January of 2003 and transfer to New Mexico.
Again, McKay and Broussard denied they made illegal contact with Granger, but the cellphgone records were proof that they had. Bradley filed a complaint with the NCAA and refused to release Granger from his scholarship, which resulted in him having to pay his own way his first year there and losing a year of eligibility. Eventually, the NCAA agreed with Bradley there had been violations made by McKay and Broussard, but the penalties they imposed were minor (compliance meetings, and loss of a few weeks of recruiting in the summer).

No doubt, the loss of Granger in midseason of 2002-2003 killed any chances of that year being successful, and it hurt Bradley for the next 2 1/2 seasons that they lost Granger. He was a potential All-American had he stayed at BU. The one full season that he was with New Mexico, was their only NCAA appearance under McKay. It set back Jim's chances to succeed at Bradley, which his excellent recruiting and coaching eventually overcame.
But the tampering and NCAA violations by a couple of former Bradley guys, and their deceit to try to cover it up, will never be forgiven by many Bradley fans.

Just to show the Granger thing was not just sour grapes and that the Bradley people (Jim Les and KK) have moved on and harbor no grudges, check out this column--

Jim Les was sought out by NBA scouts prior to the 2005 NBA draft to dig up anything negative they could on Granger. Yet, as this Gregg Doyel article reports, Jim Les took the high road and praised Granger highly. Likely, Jim Les helped get Granger drafted as highly as he was. He could have exacted revenge then, but chose not to.
