TCS' Shot

During warm-ups last night, I noticed something for the first time all season...TCS' shot is really, really flat. Maybe he could deliver on some of his promise next year if the coaches work with him this offseason to get a nice arc on his shot. Has anyone else noticed how flat his shot is?

I've always found Ruffin to have a fairly flat shot as well, but there's a big difference between his shot and TCS' IMO. Ruff shoots more down on his body and in front of his face and seems to guide his shot a little more than just letting it fly. TCS really cocks his arms back behind his head when he takes a shot. It almost looks like he's loading a catapult as far back as it'll go.

Swinging the ball behind your head, as TCS will do (as does Will E by the way) will always lead to inconsistent shooting.

By contrast, watch JC. His shot is TEXTBOOK. He takes the ball just a few inches off his forehead EVERY TIME, whether it is a free throw or a 24 footer and generates his energy with his lower body. Ironically he led the nation of 3 point accuracy last year. In case anyone didn't know that.;)

I posted this a long time ago about WE swinging the ball back so far. I mentioned that Larry Bird was the ONLY player I can think of who can get away with shooting that way. I would hope someone would work with him and try to change his motion. Another downside to swinging the ball back so far is it makes for a very slow release.

I think most would agree that Bird played during an era when it was up to the player to develop their own style and they were either good or they weren't. Bird was a set shooter, and IMO simply shot the ball from further behind his head to get the ball off quickly.

Will E "swings" the ball with his arms, which will cause inconsistency. He certainly looks talented enough to fix his shot and I think he will. I just hope it is sooner rather than later.

I posted a few months ago regarding TCS's wild, herky-jerky jumpshot form. Rarely will you ever see a good shooter who jumps in the air as high as he does and bring the ball across his body like TCS does. I have no idea how he shot 40% from 3 in JUCO, but he needs some major mechanical adjustments made over the offseason if he wants to contribute at all. His free throws are awful as well.

In JUCO there is not the good def. players therefore he would of had more area and time to set and shot which probably contributed to the high 3 %. But at this level that won't happen! As for him changing his from, fotget it! It's to late in his career.
As is now his playing time for this yr. is over and with all the guards coming in I don't see him playing much next yr. He may and probably should trasfer to a Div.2 if he wants to enjoy his last yr. of playing ball!

You may be right that it will be hard for him to change his form completely.

However there will be a lot of time spent in the gym during individual workouts, team practices and just TCS working on his game himself before we toss it up next fall.

I guarantee you that TCS and our coaching staff feel like improvment can be made and he still has a chance to be a very important player next season.

I don't think it's too late to make a few mechanical adjustments. It's never too late. Guys are making mechanical adjustments to their games their whole lives. JC made some mechanical adjustments to be able to get his shot off quicker and look at the dividends it has paid. Ruffin has made mechanical adjustments to not shoot the ball so flat, and the results speak for themselves. It's not too late for TCS to make a few tweaks to his shot, and I don't even think it's too late for a complete overhaul (if the staff thinks that's the answer). What's the downside to messing with his shot? Can it really get any worse than 32% from the field, 24% from 3, and 55% from the line?

I'm more concerned about WE's shot as Will has 3 years remaining and bigs are more of a premium.

Yeah, I would agree. However even more concerning than WE's shot is WE's reluctance to play in the paint. He's a legit 6'9" with great leaping ability. I'm sorry, but he needs to learn how to play inside before he gets the freedom to roam onto the perimeter for the occasional 3 IMO. He's just too big and too talented to waste 20 feet from the basket.

I'm also said that. He needs to slash to the basket and man up under the boards. He's got the body and athleticism to be a force in the paint.

I agree with BB too. My favorite times watching WE came early in the season when he was down low fighting inside a bit for rebounds and taking some inside shots.

I personally think he needs to be playing with his back to the basket. There's very few players in the league that have the skillset he has. While the jumper is nice, he needs to work inside-out. He could be dominant in the post with some instruction. A jump hook, a turnaround jumper, and an up-and-under would put him on a whole other level offensively.

Yeah back-to-the-basket would be great. Even when he seemed to be playing inside more, it was still face-up play. That being said, good post footwork seems to be pretty difficult to learn... If he learned guard skills he'd be terrifying out there, but our need, and what seems to be more "doable," is WE as a post player.

I agree its never too late to change the mechs. What I said and meant is he is in his last year and change takes time. As for JC it took him a yr. (2nd) to make the change and DR made his change the year he sat out. Both had time on their side. I just don't see TCS making the mechanical changes by next yr. needed to be a player of much playing time but I could be wrong!! And I hope I am!! I still stand by what I said about his row next yr. if he wants to play!
