Too many Minutes

Last nights game
Wilson 31 min.
Maniscalco 39 min.
Crouch 37 min.
Warren 38 min.Salley 25 min.
Austin 1 min.
Singh 21 min.
Cole-Scott 8 min.
The last 2 games we have gotten off to a good start only to run out of gas in the 2nd half; Crouch, Maniscalco, and Warren are playing too many minutes and it is effecting them as Crouch looked slower then normal until the last 5 min. of the game, Maniscalco had only 1 point in the 2nd half, and Warren seems to be better offensively in the 1st half also; they need to get a 4 min. break in the 1st half or they will not be as effective as they should.

It's no wonder our shots don't fall in the 2nd half. If I played roughly 90 to 95% of the minutes or more, I would be exhausted too and it is much much more difficult to shoot when you are exhausted. It is hard to do a lot of things when you are like that. But we still leave people on the bench that can eat up minutes, ex. DC, WE, RA.

If we want our backcourt to have more rest, we have to go with a bigger lineup more. We don't have any other guards to pull from the bench, but going with 2 or 3 guards instead of 4 would save a lot of minutes.

If they're tired, then they're out of shape. We're 15 games into a season, they shouldn't be hitting the wall yet. If we're getting tired in the 2nd half, then maybe we should slow the game down a little bit instead of running ourselves out of games.

While, to an extent, I agree with the shape statement. I also think it sets us up for failure.
Even players in the best of shape have to "rest" or relax a little bit at some point during the game (resulting in more lax defense or less away from the ball movement on O, and logging heavy minutes also worsens possible injury issues.

In our situation, the worst problem with logging really heavy minutes, is that too many players playing too many minutes will make it impossible to win the MVCT, even if we somehow make Friday. If we always have to log heavy minutes from a few playres, we absolutely will not have even a remote shot at the NCAA.

Too Many Minutes

Too Many Minutes

I don't about the too many minutes point, but I do know that JC doesn't seem to have the hustle and leadership he had last year. He makes a lot of bad passes and he has far too many turnovers. I can forgive his defensive, but I don't get his lack of passion to lead.

I agree with you 100% in that it looks like JC's just going through the motions, which is really disturbing for a senior team captain. Although I disagree on the defense part - his matador defense is unacceptable.

That's a really good point.

Another point would be foul problems.......if you only play 6 player's....sooner or later you will get a couple guys in foul trouble and you get a fresh player off the bench who hasn't had a chance to get into a game flow or even get a chance to warm up? That is not a good situation to be in....let's get some others involved and make them feel like part of the team and not worry about making 1 mistake......getting yanked and a lecture on the sidelines.....this is not good for a confidence booster! Yell at the guys during practice...pat them on their rears or give them five during the game on the way to the bench....you will get more effort from a guy not playing affraid to make an error! Time to become a TEAM........this includes the coach's.....you win and lose together! BOOK IT!

When you are playing over 35 minutes in a game you are going to be exhausted and running out of gas near the end, especially if you are going all out while you are out there. We need to use our bench more. There is no reason for DC/RA/WE to be getting 1 minute between the 3 of them in a game.

Crouch is just going through the motions?? Yeah right...it makes total sense that JC would coast through his senior season, gimme a break...

Maybe he isn't, but actions speak louder than words. His lazy passes and even lazier defense make it appear as if he's not giving it his all sometimes. Maybe losing his starting position like he did in 2006 will light a fire under him.

Or perhaps playing 30+ minutes in almost every game this season, as well as being the primary focus of every defensive scheme since Ruff's injury has him slightly fatigued. It'd be great to give him more time to rest, but in BU's current situation it just isn't going to happen.

That could be. All the more reason to bring him off the bench. He doesn't rebound, isn't shooting well, and doesn't defend (but who does really?). My backcourt would be Sam, AW, and TW. We all have our guesses on who the #4 and #5 should be. If Eric Coleman can come off the bench, why can't JC?

Crouch could just maybe be the sixth man off the bench to give this team some instant offense. Right now they are not getting this from anyone. It would also take some of the pressure off him, and with fresh legs I think he might have a better chance to "light things up" :)

Sure, Eric Coleman did come off the bench against us, in a move that totally took me by surprise as I have not followed UNI at all this year. He then played 27 minutes, more than any other UNI post player.

Just take my word for it, Crouch is not mailing it in. Has his defense been subpar at times? Sure. It has never been a great strong point of his. But the fact that the entire teams defense is just plain awful has done nothing but magnify it. I'd wager that his defense on and off the ball is no worse than last season, he just doesn't have the help that he had last year. I've said this so many times around friends and family that I feel like a broken record: this team misses J.J. Tauai more than they ever imagined they would. Talk about a guy who can single handedly make 4 other players look like they're playing good D...

His turnovers have been up slightly but I wouldn't say that alot of them were lazy passes. Last night he realistically only had 2 turnovers as the 3rd was a pass that would have hit someone in the front row if he hadn't tried to save it and it got intercepted.

Coleman has been coming off the bench for quite a while now. I am not saying JC needs to be relegated to mop-up duty again, not at all. I just think that our lineup needs an overhaul, and the team and JC may both benefit by him coming off the bench.

Changes? Yes.

Overhaul? No.

Me and a close friend of mine, who usually attend most BU home games and sit near the top of the arena in order to better view the entire court, are pretty knowledgable about basketball and really have no idea what is going on with the substitution pattern. If anything, JL (or Little Bisch, since he is in charge of substitutions) needs to be more consistent with his rotations. Playing some players 25+ minutes some games and 0 minutes the next game does nothing but shatter confidence and sometimes can pit players against coaches. By this point in the season, the roles of these players should be defined. JL needs to pick an 8-9 man rotation and stick with it. Before every game I wonder who is in JL's "doghouse" for the night.

Great point about the possibility this team really misses JJ's contributions...
