  • The NCAA list of Banned Substances

So just what is the rule.

Here is the list of things the NCAA bans, and it includes even caffeine and Ritalin as well as marijuana, steroids, adrenaline-like agents, and even diuretics (because they are routinely used to mask evidence of drugs in the urine.)

***NOTE that not all urines that test positive for marijuana are considered a violation. Only those with test results above
15ng/ml. The concentration is, of course, affected by how dilute the urine is. Thus the rules banning diuretics (which
dilute the urine), and if players give their samples without adequately hydrating themselves they run the risk of
concentrating their urines and increasing the probability of making any test positive.***

Here is the list of results for NCAA athletes tested (2004-2005 is the most recnet year for data)

Things an athlete must know before tinkling into the bottle:

One other recent story on marijuana use in D-I basketball.

One of Fresno State's players said this:
"(Terry) Pettis says the habitual use of marijuana that began in high school continued during his freshman year at Fresno State.

"Marijuana was a problem my whole time at Fresno State," said Pettis, who spent 19 months with the Bulldogs, "and they [school officials] looked past our marijuana tests my freshman year. The people that looked at our marijuana drug tests my freshman year, it didn't matter to them because we were winning."

Indeed, the Bulldogs were a surprising success on the court, winning 20 games and the regular-season Western Athletic Conference title.

But Pettis, who spoke to The Bee in person and by phone from the Fresno County Jail, said he failed "at least nine" drug tests while at Fresno State, all due to his extensive marijuana use. He was away from the team at least once because of drugs: He entered a 30-day rehab program during his sophomore season in November 2003.

Scott Johnson, Fresno State's athletic director at the time, acknowledges that the men's basketball team had a marijuana problem and says the school tried to address it. Johnson, interim economic development director for the city of Fresno, declined to comment on Pettis in particular.

Current school officials also said they could not discuss Pettis' allegations. Linda Gannaway, coordinator of Fresno State's student-athlete assistance program, pointed to the school's drug-testing policy, which at the time stated an athlete was to be suspended for a year after a fourth positive test.

"I probably failed three drug tests during the time I got back on the team [sophomore year]," Pettis said. "I wished they would have suspended me for that whole year. ???‚¬?¦ I wish they just would have taken me away from the [basketball] program."

It's not clear why he didn't suffer the same punishment as two of his teammates, Jonathan Woods and Renaldo Major. They were kicked off the team during the 2003-04 season after failing drug tests.

At the time of his dismissal, Major said it had nothing to do with drugs. But when reached by phone last month, Major, who played semipro basketball for the Dodge City (Kan.) Legend this season, said he smoked marijuana occasionally at Fresno State and failed drug tests because of it.

"It was just a habit that you pick up ???‚¬?¦ a product of your environment," Major said. "They [school officials] were probably too lenient with us, and that made us think we could get away with [anything]."

Pettis was kicked off the team for good in February 2004 following a game at Louisiana Tech. After being benched during the double-overtime loss, he pouted and sat at the end of the bench. Lopes said Pettis was dismissed for a "poor attitude."

(so only when he became unproductive and had a poor attitude did he get dismissed!)
