  • Maryland releases their 06-07 schedule- no MVC teams!

What a coward that weasel Gary Williams is. I thought he wanted to play teams from the MVC so he could show the world that Maryland deserved to be in the NCAA before Bradley, Wichita, and UNI. That was before his Maryland team got a first round home game in the NIT and was embarrassed by Manhattan on their home floor.

Here is their 06-07 schedule, just released. No surprise, it contains a bunch of cupcakes like Hampton (284), Florida A&M (263), Winthrop (73), High Point (164), Fordham (134), Missouri-Kansas City (264), American (206), Mount St. Marys (230), Siena (125), and Iona (64), all on Maryland's home court! The numbers after each of the teams are last year's RPI.
They play only 1 non-conference game on the road, 4 on neutral sites, and 11 at home.

CBS Sports features live scoring, news, stats, and player info for NFL football, MLB baseball, NBA basketball, NHL hockey, college basketball and football.

Recall that last spring Gary Williams said, ""They (the MVC) haven't been banging down anyone's door in the ACC to play. The phone works both ways, last time I checked."

After that remark, more than half of the MVC schools called Gary Williams to offer to play them home and home.

This is a beautiful example of the arrogance from BCS programs.

Just another feather in my hat as to why I can not stand to talk to pinheads that support BCS programs.

Hey Gary.... take that pukey in-bred BCS bull-hockey mentality of yours and your ilk and....

Maryland got the #1 seed in the NIT so they got to play the very lowest ranked, lowest seeded team in the NIT, Manhattan.
On top of that, Gary Williams threw a tantrum that he was left out of the NCAA and told the NIT people he wouldn't play in the NIT unless he got the top seed and three guaranteed home games!
SO THE NIT PEOPLE KISSED HIS BUTT, and gave in to him!
Then only 4,000 people show up for the game!!!

They also got to play at home and early on a Saturday (11AM), as they requested, to be sure that they had a time slot for national TV and no other games for competetion.
But all the pre-planned trickery to help get Gary Williams past the first round of the NIT with his team that he claimed deserved to be in the NCAA ahead of all the MVC teams, he still got butt-whumped by Manhattan.

Even the hand picked NIT refs tried to help Gary Williams' Terps, by calling so many fouls on Manhattan's starters, that three of them fouled out, and even one of the top subs did too.
Maryland got to shoot 60% more FT's than Manhattan.

But in the end, it was one of the most enjoyable games I have ever watched, as I sat with friends up in Michigan waiting for BU's next game in the NCAA.

Here are some of the great posts and discussion from back then, and if you have the time, you have to go back and relive it!

        Oh my ...
this schedule makes the Illini's look strong!
HAMPTON, then the winner of the New Orleans/Vermont game

then look at the midmajors Maryland chooses to buy games from:

        FLORIDA A&M
        WINTHROP
        HIGH POINT
        FORDHAM
        MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY
        AMERICAN
        MOUNT ST. MARY'S
        SIENA
        IONA

I hope a couple of these guys beat 'em, and I hope Illinois snuffs them.
Wonder if Gary ever returned Barry Hinson's calls?

No way-- they only had 4,000 for a post season tourney game?

The official attendance was reported as 4,761.
Every single one of their home games (for years!) is a sellout, and registers 17,950 attendance.
(they play in the 17,950 seat Comcast Center)
Their average home attendance of 17,950 is 5th best in the nation (behind UNC, Syracuse, Kentucky, Louisville)
Indeed that's what makes this so unbelievable.
They had at least 13,200 empty seats for this tourney game.

            (here's a comparison...
Creighton drew 10,197 and 10,018 in their two NIT home games and
even Missouri State drew more than Maryland at 5,833.)

              Found a funny article.
It details lots of bad things that have happened to the Terrapins since the summer, almost as if the curse has been transferred to Maryland.
Recruits renegged on committments, criminal issues of ex-Terp Lonnie Baxter, etc.

Get ready for Gary Williams stumping for the NCAA to take
7 teams out of the ACC, as his team is picked to finish 7th.

I just had to resurrect this old Gary Williams/Maryland thread.
Williams has shown no respect for nor admiration for the Missouri Valley, and claimed openly in the press that no MVC teams had contacted his school to schedule games.
                  Barry Hinson responded:
"Is that not awesome?" Hinson said, laughing. "My gosh. That's so funny. I'll provide a record of our phone logs if you need them. That's absolutely ridiculous."

Well Gary got every break, was given all home games, and paired with the lowest seeded team in the NIT last year, then proceeded to lose on national TV.

This year they started out hot, and were ranked much of the season after starting out 14-2.

But now Maryland has lost 3 of their last four, mostly to teams in the bottom of the ACC, and still has the hardest part of his schedule by far ahead of him, with 2 games each against Duke, UNC, NC State and Florida State.
They are now tied for 10th place in the ACC, but only 0.5 game ahead of 12th/last place.

Anyone feel sorry for Gary, yet?
Well, don't because Gary seems to have broken the code of the RPI, with only ONE of his non-conference wins over a team with an RPI better than 48, and still sits with a sub-40 RPI, even thought he's close to last in the ACC.

Prepare yourself!! Get ready for the drone of Gary Williams' voice claiming the ACC deserves 10 bids as his team is poised for a deep finish in the ACC.
