  • Chicago State Player Fights with Coach

In the lockerroom at halftime in Chicago State's 69-61 loss at Michigan State, one of Chicago State's better players got
angry at something the coach said and attempted to start a fist fight with Chicago State head coach Kevin Jones.
Cam-Ron Clay had to be escorted from the lockerroom, was immediately expelled from the team, and was required to find alternate transportation back to Chicago.

WGN had an expanded report on all the troubles going on at Chicago State. There are also a few articles.

First, the altercation between the player and the head coach not only caused the player to leave the team, but then the AD suspended the head coach Kevin Jones until all the facts coud "come out".
But in the interview last night on WGN, the new AD seems a little recluctant to find those facts or clear the head coach publicly, and has now suggested that Jones might be absent a few more games if more problems surface.
Meanwhile, in Jones' absence, one of the assistant coaches was supposedly running the team, and when Coach Jones stopped in at practice he found that the team had changed all the defenses and offensive plays, and even worked out a new pregame workout/ritual/and intro-routine, suggesting they are trying to push the present head coach out.
Jones says the AD Wayne Baskerville is not telling him everything and won't back him in the incident on Dec. 16 where a played tried to start a fight with the coach.

Meanwhile, Chicago State is playing 23 of its 29 scheduled games on the road, but that raises $350,000 in revenue by playing all those "guarantee games."
Some have questioned where all that money has been going.
Chicago State is in the midst of constructing a new arena to play basketball in, but where they play now drew only 121 fans for last night's win over NAIA IU-South Bend.

Last night, only 6 players dressed, as the head coach's son, Kevin Jones, Jr. was out with a back injury, and a couple other kids were injured.
The six who dressed scored from 10-28 points each (David Holston scored 28 ) and won 109-73.
Chicago State is 7-14 this year and was 11-19 last year, which constitutes an improvement over the prior year.

Its wild...they were one game from the NCAA's last year.

That new stadium is getting built because of the clout of Emil Jones...who is the state senator from CSU's district and I believe is the ranking Dem downstate. Its certainly not due to demand for tickets for Cougar games.

I'm sure the new gym will draw much better for local high school games and tournaments than for CSU.

The one big mistake the coach made was to leave a player in Michigan to find his way home; the player was 100% wrong in fighting with his coach but this coach put the school at risk of a lawsuit if anything happened to that player ; it could have been handled a lot different.

This story is several months old, and the head coach Kevin Jones has been fired as well.
But there is some news at Chicago State.

One player, Kevin Jones, Jr. (son of the fired coach) is suing another one of the players, Camron Clay, "who he claims attacked him multiple times in the university's dormitory."

Clay is the plaer who started this whole mess by attacking the head coach and getting kicked off the team.

Even more bizarre goings on at Chicago State--

I can't imagine how they can ever expect to hire a new coach to want to work in this atmosphere.
What would Don Imus call these thugs?
