Midmajor Coastal Carolina in their final season in the Big South Conference upset numerous high-level baseball schools, including a 2 out of 3 series win in the final series against Arizona, to win the 2016 College World Series in their first appearance.

Next season CCU will play in the Sun Belt Conference, which they say they chose to switch to in order to focus on football, and move to a BCS conference.
