Carlwell quits Illinois

The other Carlwell wasn't.......but this is unfortunately a very, very sad story,
as Brian Carlwell did have a lot of promise, but that injury changed everything.
There was mention that he might try to get a medical redshirt for this past season,
and he should be able to qualify for it, as he played in only three games.

But here's the problem.....he didn't play much as a freshman, then he hasn't played much this season and might be able to get a redshirt year, and now if he transfers, he'll have to sit out an entire season and NOT be eligible until the 2009-2010 season!
That means he will have played only a handful of minutes in games from spring of 2006 when he graduated high school, all the way through fall of 2009 when he will next be eligible....almost 3 years of wasted opportunity.

The "other Carlwell" was nowhere near a 4-star, Rivals top 100 recruit out of high school...Brian was. So that comparison isn't really valid.
I have no idea how much Brian's injuries might have limited what he can end up being as a player...but I just know that I would prefer that a 6'11" kid that was a 4-star, top 100 recruit nationally out of high school stays as far away from the Valley as possible...(unless he comes to BU).

I am torn, over all I would be a little afraid of ISU with him and Robinson on the front line. But I was shocked at how bad he looked in the small amount of play he got this year. He may be damaged goods for good. I also have heard he doesn't have the best work ethic. But he still is a load and if he gets things under control, look out!

I do think that Carlwell could develop into a heck of a player in the Valley. He showed flashes of strong play as a freshman at Illinois - his shotblocking was already very good, but he looked a bit lost offensively. This season, he put on some extra (unwanted) weight and found himself out of the regular rotation, then suffered a knee injury that kept him from practicing.

Jim Les may want to make a call to Brian and gauge his interest in Bradley. I think he would have eventually gotten into the rotation at Illinois had he stuck around and worked hard, but a transfer is probably best for him right now. He'll sit out next season, then have at least 2 years remaining, starting with 2009-10. I think he'd have to apply with the NCAA for his 4th year of eligibility, since it would be his 6th year in college. I'm not sure how often that type of request is granted.

I hadn't considered the fact that he'd be playing with Robinson - that could be a heck of a frontline.

Not sure what to say about this one. Brian's a good guy, and his situation over the last two seasons is unfortunate. He was hyped up pretty highly, and although I was unimpressed when he was in the game, in his defense, I don't think he ever got enough minutes to make a fair evaluation on him.

Here is a game-by-game log of Carlwell's stats.
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/players/60392/gamelog;_ylt=Ahyv.9kayCLhLUj4D9gnCiC_.88F

He played in 3 games this season without recording a point or a rebound. Last year he played in 26 games, never scored more than 8 points, and averaged only 1.7 ppg and 1.4 rpg when he was healthy.

I agree that he could very well end up at Transfer U., but I don't see him as any threat to cut into Dinma Odiakosa's playing time.

And maybe they read the posts here on this board--

PJ Star article--
Speculation has circulated for weeks that Carlwell would transfer to either Illinois-Chicago, a handful of miles east of his home, or Illinois State, where his brother Ronnie played.

Earlier on the BradleyFans.com board, BradleyBrave said this--
He'll end up at ISU or UIC. Book it.

I actually posted it for the first time a few weeks ago when it was announced that Carlwell would be seeking a redshirt. Hmm.... ;)

FWIW, I would take a chance on Carlwell, as long as we're not building all of our future frontcourt hopes around him (i.e. Xavier Crawford). That's what gets you into the predicament we've been in the last 2 years with our bigs.

Has he re-learned how to run yet?

Weber March 2007:

"...he??™s just kind of coming back ??¦ learning how to walk, run, jump, catch, all of those things."

I don't think it would be a bad idea to at least see if he was interseted in BU. Hopefully he is fully recovered and gets back to what he was a few years ago, wherever he lands.

John Supinie's article is linked above, and in it he suggested--

But the version of the article that actually appears in today's Peoria Journal Star never mentions the part about Carlwell resurfacing at UIC or ISU--
Illinois center says he plans to transfer

I would think that many schools might very well be interested in taking a chance in him. Just think of it this way-you are getting a player w/ 2 or possibly 3 years left and he comes in at a time when most kids his age are getting ready to graduate. His first year to play would actaully be his senior year of college. This would have given him 2 complete years to get himself into shape to be ready to play.
The one thing in all of this is how much damage to him emotionally did that accident do-could he handle the pressure of D-1 BB anymore-if he can handle the pressure he will be worth having on your team-if not he becomes a wasted scholarship-that is is the decision any coach will have to make and then live w/ either way-if he handles the pressure the coach looks like a genius and if he doesn't it could cost a coach his job depending how much stock he is putting into the player.

I have heard that Weber has overblown Carlwell's 'shortcomings' from the car accident because he didn't want him around anymore. He had a bad concussion, but I don't think he was the slobbering vegetable Weber has tried to make him out to be.

Can a player still transfer to a DII during the sit-out year (Stemler)?

Lance Stemler never went to a D-II school. He started at junior college but redshirted his freshman season. Then, since was a qualifer out of high school, he came to BU as a redshirt freshman and used his first season of eligibility. Then when he left BU, he went back and played his sophomore season at junior college again, and now is finishing the last of two seasons at IU.

He'll sit out next season, then have at least 2 years remaining......

Carlwell actually has at least FOUR options.........

--transfer to another D-I and sit out 2008-2009 then play in 2009-2010.
If he is granted a medical redshirt for this present season, then he would still have 3 years of athletic eligibility remaining.

--transfer to a D-II and he would become immediately eligible, and should have three years left

--if he is granted a medical redshirt for this season (and he might know that for sure by this summer, even as slow as the NCAA works), then he could enroll in a junior college, be immediately eligible.
This fall (2008-2009) would be his redshirt-sophomore season (kinda like what Lance Stemler did), then he'd be able to go to a D-I school in 2009-1010 as a junior and have two seasons of D-I eligibility.
I actually think this is his best option, because it allows him to play right away this fall, something he NEEDS to do since he hasn't played much since finishing high school in 2006, and it also gives him a strong probability of getting back to decent playing form and then latching on at a decent D-I school for his final two years.

--quit, turn pro, or go NAIA
