Matt Roth still backs Kelvin Sampson

Da Coach

In an interview with a blogger for the Bloomingotn, Indiana newspaper, Matt Roth makes this statement--

"It??™s been hard (seeing all the negative coverage) over the past week or so,??? he said. ???When I first heard it I was a little shocked. I thought they were going in the right direction. But I believe in Coach Sampson 110 percent and I still plan on being there.???

He does suggest, in the interview, that if Sampson is fired, "he will sit down with his parents and his high school coach, Kevin Brown, and make a decision."

I don't have any connection to the situation at all, but I would be surprised if anything changed with MR.

Just in listening to the comments he made when he committed, I think he and his parents want the opportunity for him to play in the Big 10.

I am sure there are other factors, but that is just how I felt after listening to his comments.

He doesn't just "suggest" it, he makes it quite crystal clear....

"Matt Roth.....said Wednesday night he still intends to play basketball at Indiana, as long as Kelvin Sampson is the coach"

It would appear that if Sampson is NOT the coach, then Matt Roth has no such intentions.

And then his coach will likely direct him to ISU, even though they weren't a finalist. ;)

From what I have heard, new ISU coach Tim Jankovich did not recruit Roth, and he eliminated them last spring.

That, and the fact that ISU doesn't have any scholarships left for next year, and their roster is made up of an abundance of shooting guards, makes it unlikely Roth will be calling ISU.

I hope he goes to ISU. I'd much rather see him play in the Valley, and if he accepted such an offer, I'd have a lot of respect for him. I'd much rather see him at BU or UIUC, but just the mere principal that he won't be at IU and playing for a Valley team instead would make me happy.

....sooooooo.......where do you see him going?

No doubt IU will bring in a big name coach next year with their deep pockets...................and the firing os Sampson should spare them too much damage/penalty from the NCAA...................Besides, didn't Roth partially choose IU because it was academically a great fit?

My guess, if it's a big-name coach, and if the new coach wants him he will stay for both the prestige of playing in the B-10 and for IU, and also the quality education......But that's a lot of "ifs".

Scouter, do you really think he's "hot enough" and carries enough clout for a storied program like IU?

I would expect a bigger, more established name.

I don't. A bigger, more established name isn't going to want to take over a program, regardless of how storied it is, when it's under NCAA sanctions which likely will include a ban on postseason and recruiting restrictions. I would say the biggest comparison this could possibly draw would be to Kentucky's near death penalty in the mid 80's. Kentucky's revival in the early 90's was by a guy who had been successful in college, but tried his hand at the NBA and failed miserably. That guy was Rick Pitino. Rick was a name, but not like he is now. He was still a young up-and-comer. I'd look for a guy like that or a Scott Drew type.

I am hearing the biggest-of-the big boosters are pushing for someone with a link to the Knight days. At the least it sounds like it will be someone with IU connections.

Prediction: Scott Drew will be the next IU coach (assuming Sampson is ousted).
I think that Dan Dakich will end up with the IU job on a full time basis after the season is over. and..If Dakich gets the nod, look for Roth to stay at IU! --just a gut feeling no link to back this up---

Great points BB! I guess I'm just expecting a "name" program like IU to get off easy from the NCAA by proactively decapitating the problem :)

You could be right, but I think the NCAA is going to lay the hammer down because IU knowingly got into this situation, and did it right in the NCAA's backyard (45 minutes or so from the NCAA's offices in Indy).

Dan Dakich might be the guy in the short term. He played for Knight, has been squeaky clean his whole career, and was a somewhat decent coach at Bowling Green. As Da Coach was saying, with the biggest-of-the-big IU donors wanting a Knight disciple, I can't help but think that Royce Waltman gets some consideration. He was a longtime Knight assistant, and had some great success at Indiana St with 2 tourney berths and a tourney win. I could see Pat Knight and Steve Alford's names being floated around too, although I have heard Alford isn't thought of too highly in Bloomington anymore.

Drew took over a mess of a Baylor program that had a lot of internal issues and has turned it into a quality team this season. Plus, he has ties to the state of Indiana through Valpo, so he has an up-close understanding of how huge IU is and knows the state very well.

And just how many "big names" will be on the market after this season? Still too early to say, but I don't see that many "hot" coaches being out on the market.

But can Drew keep the incoming recruits from wanting to bolt IU? That is why I think Dakich could be the key to at least the intermediate term.

Isiah Thomas
Book it

HAHAHAHA now that would make Illini fans real happy.

Seriously the hire will have to be within the family at IU and that means someone with connects to Knight. If anything to reestablish that bridge.
