Sampson Gone

If Roth decommited do we even have/want to use a scholarship on another guard?
If Roth decommits and indicates that he wants to come to BU...Yes, we absolutely, positively will want to use a scholarship on him.
Say what you want about Roth...but the kid has an elite, elite skill when it comes to shooting the basketball. And Sampson believed him to be capable of playing in the Big Ten...
So, if you are a team like BU that has built your offensive system around the 3-point shot...and if one of the absolute best H.S. shooters in the nation wants to come here...yes, you immediately hand him a LOI and a pen before he gets a chance to rethink it...
There is no one else currently in our recruiting class that is a better prospect than Roth.

Sampson offered Roth because he wanted Tyler Zeller. I would rather have Simms-Edwards if I had a choice between the two. If Roth wants to walk-on, great. Otherwise lets go get a big man and a Zack Novak-type, who can do more than just shoot 15 3's a game.

You want Roth to walk-on at BU? That's plain silly. That's not gonna happen.

I don't dispute that there can be valid questions about Roth being a bit one-dimensional...but that one dimension is as good as any kid being recruited anywhere in the nation right now. And with a BU system in place that calls for 20 to 30 three pointers per game, I want Roth on my team if we are going to run that offense.

Hey, Zack Novak would be nice...Marshall Henderson would be nice...Chris Babb would be nice...etc., etc, etc. But Novak looks to have Big Ten offers coming for him...Henderson has a Gonzaga offer...Babb has Big 12 offers and Vandy showing interest...so I would have to say it would be an unwise recruiting strategy to sit back and wait for one of those guys...becuase they are all probably aiming higher than BU at this point.

We are losing JC and DR this year...so we need shooters going forward...McCain and Roberts may be nice players, but I don't think either guy projects to be an unbelievable shooter...

I see your point but we went after Roth so hard that I would assume that if he reopens his recruiting we'd go after him. Our offense is based around the 3-point shot and from our recruiting already done I think it's safe to say that our coaching staff feels comfortable with the bigs we'll have for the next few years, hence going after two guards. Even if we sign Roth, which I think would be a great thing, we'd still have one more scholarship to go after a big man.

We didn't go after him as hard as people think, and he wasn't a make-or-break recruit. We offered him very early and kept in contact with him like we did several other recruits. A kid like Zach Novak is much more like a JC, who we're ultimately trying to replace. Roth is not. Roth would have a career similar to an Aaron Zobrist or Danny Adams, i.e. by the time he's a junior or senior might be able to start.

And he's home-grown talent that would put butts in the seats and create a buzz around the program.

I really don't care where a kid is from. Albeck had a team full of Peoria kids and we stunk, and no one went to the games. If we stunk with Ruff and JC no one would go either. Winning puts butts in the seats, nothing else.

I only said 'walk-on' because we don't have an available scholarship for a stand-still shooter IMO. We need a big and ideally a big, versatile guard to replace JC. Roth is not big, nor is he versatile at all. He's a stand-still shooter who isn't athletic and can do little else at this point in time. Perhaps by the time he's a junior or senior he could develop other parts of his game like Aaron Zobrist did, but until that point he's a stand-still shooter. We've got a 6'7" kid who's a walk-on who fits that bill as well, and we're pretty well set with AW and Sam taking 2 guard spots for the next few years, so MR would have a tough time finding significant minutes right away. I'd like to have a local kid who succeeds at BU as much as the next guy, but I think people have an over-inflated view of what MR really is and really can be. He could eventually excel and find a real role in Jim Les' current system. It wouldn't be right away though.

I agree, BB. From what I hear, Roth kept BU on his list of finalists as more of a courtesy. He already had his mind made up to go to IU long before he made the announcement.

It will be interesting to see what kind of player Roth turns into wherever he goes...
I'm just going on record by saying that I want him to end up at BU if he decommits...I think the elite skill that he has shooting the basketball is worth whatever risk or downside that you see in the rest of his game. I don't disagree with the points you raise...I just think he could end up being a much better player on this team and in the Valley than you forecast.
Again...I would love to have Novak or Babb fill JC's role...but I also don't want to get into a position where we pass on Roth to wait on Novak, Babb, etc. and then Novak goes to Michigan, Babb goes to K-State...and we once again are left holding the bag late in the game and we're sifting through the afterthoughts of all the JUCO players to fill our last two spots...(i.e., I don't want a repeat of the "hoping for Slack and Sikes...end up with Salley" scenario...)

News conference set for tomorrow, but one IU trustee says:
"IU Trustee, Philip Eskew, Jr., said he didn't expect to hear anything until tomorrow......He also questioned the validity of several media reports that said Sampson would lose his job.
"I don't think anybody knows anything, including me," Eskew told the Indiana Daily Student. "I don't think either one of those reports are true."

All the while, yet another report quoting "sources close to the IU basketball program" says KS is out
"the school is negotiating a buyout of head coach Kelvin Sampson's contract.
...... a team meeting has been called with in the hour to discuss the future of Kelvin Sampson."
(with the players)

Presumably MR has not yet been informed.

There is no one else currently in our recruiting class that is a better prospect than Roth.

Just a minor point here but The Sporting News named Eddren Mccain and Daniel West to their preseason Honorable Mention High School All America list. Roth didnt even make the list.

I want the best players regardless of position and the desire to play for BU. Just because a guy is big it does not mean he can really help out much. Villanova ran a pretty good team a few years back with a bunch of great ballhandling sharp shooting players. If we can't get that big man stud well let's sign a sharp shooting guard that wants to play for us.

Let's get the best players we can get and than build a system around them.

and on Sampson - I really do not care! I do think he is one heck of a floor coach. His teams are always ready to battle night in and night out.

I really think the case for Eddren is very Strong, I'm sure that will be like heresy on this board because MR is a local kid. But by many services and most first-hand accounts of ability, Eddren seems to be a better all-around player, I would give you he's not a better shooter, but it takes alot more than shooting...
