I guess this is the way you free up scholarships, just clean house.....Majerus must be trying to land Ben Hansbrough and a few others.

Here are the players booted...
Marcus Relphorde, Freshman...well travelled, overrated, just as many of the Boys to Men players have been
Anthony Mitchell, Freshman...a decent 6-4 SG from East St. Louis
Adam Knollmeyer, Sophomore...6-8 PF, saw 5.4 mpg, averaged 18 ppg 12 repg in HS
Dustin Maguire, Sophomore...from Bethalto, Civic Memorial, 6-5 SG, 18.2 ppg scorer in HS, was redshirting

He has seven players already coming in next year...Ruben Cotto, Brett Thompson, Kyle Cassity, Brian Conklin, Femi John, Kwamain Mitchell, Willie Reed.
and four scholarship players returning, Tommie Liddell, Kevin Lisch, Barry Eberhardt, Paul Eckerle.

Majerus' explanation...."If I could have 17 scholarships, I'd keep all four"
Ha, ha....I doubt it, as higher in the article he says..."it's about playing time to a certain extent, about a style of play, about a change of the coaching staff"
In other words...he didn't recruit these kids and he doesn't want them.......

Just to be certain. If one of these 4 decided well I want to be close to home IE SIUE, they would have to sit one year, even though leaving the SLU apparently was not their decision?

But if Majerus were told to leave SLU and he then decided to coach at lets say Marquette he would not have to sit one year.

How is that right? Assuming you want to stay somewhere but are told your not welcome anymore so you might as well leave, you are penalized for something you had no decision in making.

I know schollies are not guaranteed for 4 seasons and are renewable on a yearly basis but unless a player has academic issues or has done something outside of the school or to the team, it does not seem fair to penalize the player by making him sit for one year when he is not making the decision to leave, especially if that player wants to play D1.

That is one of the unfair rules the NCAA has, and though most coaches would like to see it changed, it probably won't be, soon. I think a kid should not have to sit out a year if he is forced to transfer by any coach who cuts his scholarship off.

But this move by Majerus was expected. He was already over the scholarship limit and was still recruiting a number of 2008 kids.
Among others, he is hotly pursuing Josh Harrellson, the 6'9" kid that verballed a year ago to Western Illinois and then instead spent the year at Southwestern Illinois juco.

Maybe the NCAA should stop worrying about the 3 point line and start worrying about, oh I don't know, the STUDENT ATHLETES. Especially the ones in their commercials who are "going pro on something other than sports"

i really thought that he was going to let Lisch go.
Good to see he is taking some steps forward hopefully with the program.
Maybe he was considerate of the players and let them stay in his hotel room for the night before they took a flight home.

The NCAA's head is buried in a hole ... very near to where people typically keep their wallet. The NCAA's new motto is, "Smell me the money!"

Majerus may have trouble recruiting in areas where these players came from as you just don"t run that many out in a season.

Is the 6'8" worth pursuing? I think we could afford to have him sit out next year if we think we can contribute for the 2 years after.

There's seems to be a few more players leaving their schools either from their choice or the coaches than years before...I wonder if there are any statistics on this. Is it the kids or the coaches who are pressured to win at all costs?

There is also a pretty good big leaving Florida!

Rick Majerus is also jettisoning one of the
Saint Louis assistants ....

It is confirmed...Agres Thorpe is leaving.
Thorpe also coached at Lewis and Ball State and already has another assistant spot lined up,
but it is a considerable step down, going to UW-GB.

It's hard for me to blame the new coaches when they come in. The new coach is given a big contract and expected to win right away. The last coach's recruits got him fired. I'm really surprised in this case so many of them stuck around to play this year.

I realize that it sucks for the young players that got recruited by a fired coach, but I would have to assume that all of them have something lined up since they knew this was coming.

There's no way he would let lisch go. Kevin was their best and most consistant player the past 2 years and he'll be a senior next year. That would have been a terrible move to force him out.

.....

Dustin Maguire is transferring to Northern Kentucky where he will play with a couple of ex-ICC players, DeAaron Williams and Kyle Julius.

Marcus Relphorde (who Bradley looked at a little as a recruit while in high school) is one of the most well-traveled players in memory. He played at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, and then transferred to Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago, but was ruled ineligible. He then enrolled briefly at Millersburg Military Institute in Millersburg, Kentucky, then dropped out and attended Boys to Men Academy in Chicago for a year, then transferred and played 1 year at American Christian prep school in Philadelphia. That's at least 5 different high schools/prep schools! Then he was signed by Brad Soderberg to St. Louis University. But he spent just 1 season on the roster, played very little, and was dismissed by new coach Rick Majerus.

Now, he has enrolled at juco powerhouse Indian Hills CC in Ottumwa, Iowa. He will team up there with 2 other BU recruits Dwight Buycks and Leon Powell.--

Marcus Relphorde has resurfaced........since being booted from Saint Louis...

he has already been at six different schools in the past 3 years, and now he commits to his 7th school since his high school junior year, and when this season ends, he'll then be heading to his 8th!
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=3220

Relphorde is now at the same junior college as Dwight Buycks, Dwight Hardy, Leon Powell, and the two top players who just left WIU, Delvon Johnson & James Washington, so Indian Hills, which finished 6th at the NJCAA Nationals, will have a good chance of having a pretty strong team this coming season with at least six D-I caliber prospects!

BTW--
I found a really GREAT quote about Rick Majerus....

UMass point guard Chris Lowe said this when they hired Derek Kellogg as their new head coach at UMass....

"I was concerned they were going to bring in a coach that wanted us to pass
the ball 10 times before we shoot. Nothing against Rick Majerus. He??™s one of
the best coaches ever, but they want to score in the 50s. With the personnel
we have we want to get up and down and make the game fun.???

Relphorde puts himself into contention for the World Record most schools attended in a 5 year span....
HF, Hales, Millersburg, then HF again, then Boys to Men, the American Christian, then Saint Louis, then Indian Hills, now commits to Colorado.
If he makes if to Colorado, it'll actually be the 9th school he's been at (not just committed to) since his sophomore year in HS.

Maybe we should add him to the records that may never be broken thread...but I am not sure that this one still could get broken!
Relphorde averaged 1 ppg in his freshman year at Saint Louis and 10 ppg at Indian Hills.
Not bad that a guy who can never stay at any school more than 6 months, and who's never
averaged more than about 10 ppg to get a BCS ride!

The scout.com article says Marcus was "also getting heavy interest from ..Wichita State and Illinois State."

.....Femi John.......

A good story of kid's comeback -
Femi John started at Saint Louis in 2008 playing for Rick Majerus, and after an injury plagued career - he finally decided in 2012 to give up playing and have surgery...
His NCAA clock ran out at the end of 2013 so his eligibility had expired...

BUT - he has now gained a 6th year waiver and transferred to Missouri-St. Louis for his senior year
