Joe Stowell Court

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but while watching Illinois vs. Purdue last week I noticed that the Purdue court was dedicated to Gene Keady as -"Keady Court" which was painted in large letters parallel to the side boundary. After decades of devoting his life to Boilermaker hoops, the school showed some love and dedicated the court as a thank you to the old coach. Then I started thinking...Coach Stowell is the personification of BU hoops. What a thrilling and fitting tribute it would be to dedicate the court at Carver Arena to this icon of Central Illinois Athletics. Who has meant more to our Hilltop heritage? Anyway, just a thought....

I disagree. Joe Stowell isn't even the 3rd best coach in our school's history, or one of the better players. He's a Hall of Famer, but I don't think the court should be named after him. The only person who deserves that honor is Hersey Hawkins. He's the greatest player in our history, has been a university trustee, and gave back to the community for several years after he left Bradley.

I agree 100%. Joe Stowell reminds me of the Ron Santo of Bradley basketball. Great guy, never really won anything, and is known by a whole generation plus for his radio/misc work than his original work.

I don't know if you could name the court after a player though, with so many great ones in the past and more to come. Although if you did have to choose one, Hawk definitely takes it.

How about Jim Les Court in about 25 years or so?

Bradley does not own the court in Carver Arena. And of course, they don't own Carver, they just rent. There are a lot of other basketball games played on that court besides Bradley games.

It's not likely Bradley could get the right to name the court after anyone, since it's not their court.

Hey if they want to name their court after someone who had ALL of his success at another school more power to them.

You didnt make anyone mad, I doubt anyone cares enough about who Indiana State names their court after to really get mad but it is a seriously silly decision, but so is having him in the Valley hall of fame. He didnt earn his fame in the Valley.

That's interesting and something I've never really thought about. But if that's the case, shouldn't BU (or the PCC) get rid of all the things on there that have "Bradley" written on them? What about the banners? Did Bradley really buy the new court or paint job they put on there last year or was that the PCC's doing? I guess what I'm asking is, how much say does Bradley have in what kind of Bradley things are around Carver Arena?

I think there is a difference between the landlord (the Civic Center) putting some logos on the court and allowing the BU retired jerseys to be portrayed on the wall (it's all quite temporary - BTW, the Rivermen's retired jerseys are also up on the walls), as opposed to allowing Bradley to name the court after one of it's great past coaches (that seems a little harder to undo if the Braves ever leave Carver). There is a lot of precedence for Civic arenas allowing the teams' logos, but I am not aware of any public arena that has had the court dedicated to someone affiliated with the team that rents their space.

This is just a guess....but if BU purchased the floor, they could name it after whoever they wanted. They would probably have to pay the PCC for storage etc... IMO, if this could be done, I would think that Coach Stowell would be a great choice to name the court after.

I would not disagree with you there. Certainly a practice facility or something having to do with the program should have his name. He has been part of the program in one way or the other for over half a century. My only reservation was naming the court after him. Usually, that honor seems to go to a HOF player or coach (and honestly I think it's a bit silly to call a building one thing, but name a court another thing, but that's another discussion altogether).

I'm not sure everyone realizes what a gem we have in Dave Snell. He could have left many times for bigger markets and the NBA, but chose to stay in his beloved hometown and work for a place he truly loves, Bradley University. We get an hour pregame show, which I know is produced by others, but would not occur without Dave's hard work in the past. We get games that are called to perfection because of his hard work, preparation, and vast knowledge of all things Bradley and MVC. We get an excellent post game show with player interviews and the head coach actually involved, which is fairly uncommon these days. Somewhere in the Peoria Civic Center, beside all of the other banners, needs to be a Dave Snell 900 banner, or something along those lines. The guy's a true professional and we are very lucky to have him.

Absolutely correct. I have had the opportunity to meet Dave and talk with him about some career related stuff, and he was extremely helpful, and even gave me his score card for the DePaul game two years ago! He is a great individual, and loves Bradley as more then anyone I know. He is an excellent representative of BU, and we are truly fortunate to have him calling our basketball games.
