Coach Les

New member
Coach Les is now overall 129-106, and of all the head coaches BU has had, Jim now ranks 6th overall in total wins......and may be able to pass each of the next four guys ahead of him in the next 3-4 years....if we keep on the 20 game pace.

AJ Robertson 316 wins
Joe Stowell 197 wins
Chuck Orsborn 194 wins
Jim Molinari 174 wins
Forddy Anderson 152 wins

(for comparison, 7 season into his career as a head coach, Dana Altman had 104 wins. Even at the end of his 8th season, he still had fewer than Coach Les has now, just 119. Thus Jim Les has reached this point, 129 wins faster than any other coach in the Missouri Valley ;))

Funny how a coach can build up so many wins without finishing higher than tied for 4th in his league. Must have something to do with extra games played in post-season tournaments that never used to be around a few years back?

Just goes to show how statistics don't always tell the whole story. I tell my statistics students that all the time. If there is a number, there is something behind it--so watch out and be critical. Especially if it comes from the government or CNN!

I disagree with your premise but agree numbers can lie. With 7 extra wins over the last two seasons you have to include the 3 addl losses, so it's not quite as skewed as you would make it seem - something like 122 - 103. The alphabet soup post season tournaments have only been around a couple of years so it's not that hard to figure out.

My God this is nauseating. Again with the Dana Altman comparison? Answer these questions -

1. How many games did it take Dana to get to 119?
2. What was Dana's winning percentage over 7 seasons?
3. How many conference titles did Dana have over 7 seasons?
4. How many top 3 conference finishes did Dana have over 7 seasons?
4. How many single-digit loss seasons did Dana have over 7 seasons?

Ok...how about even Jim Molinari?

1. How many games did it take to get to 119?
2. What was Mo's winning percentage over 7 seasons?
3. How many conference titles did Mo have over 7 seasons?
4. How many top 3 conference finishes did Mo have over 7 seasons?
4. How many single-digit loss seasons did Mo have over 7 seasons?

Never let the facts get in the way of a good argument...

How many times has Dana Altman or Jim Molinari been to the Sweet 16?

Nevermind.......we're not supposed to dwell on such trivial things of the distant past.

You also would have to analyze who the teams played each year, how good those teams were that year, and the list goes on and on... Using the same argument as the first post, if ISU continues to schedule like it has the past couple years their coach will become the winningest coach in league history...

Finally, apparently there are people in this world who would rather have Jim Les as their coach than Dana Altman if there was a choice. Unfortunately, that choice is not a possibility.

Just asking again...what was Coach Versase's record? 129-106 does not have me doing cartwheels. Yes, 2006 was great, but it has left me wanting more.

I would consider that trip the the NCAA to be an anomaly based on what happened before and after those two games (Pitt & Kansas).

I just want someone to tell me what this twitter post from JL means???...

commit to style/energy and intensty to go with execution/PRIDE that ea. will do their part to make us a good basketball team-Fireup-SunHOOPS

Give me a break. Jim's had 1 NCAA appearance in 7 years with 2 wins. Dana has had 7 in 11 years with 2 wins. I'd rather be there nearly every year than once in blue moon, even if we went out in the 1st round all but twice.

The Sweet 16 was great and all, but the season as a whole was frustrating, and I don't want to be clinging to that one miracle run like the Bears still cling to 1985.

Exhausting...These incessant Les-Altman, McCain-Dillard, Egolf-Falker comparisons are embarrassing.

Fair enough argument, but Jank's scheduling seems like a transparent effort to use ISU as a bridge job to a higher level. Schedule for lots of W's and make yourself more of a hot commodity in the eyes of some BCS athletic directors. So doubt he'll be around long enough to break any records.

I am not a JL apologist, but have never felt that the BU schedules in his tenure here have been soft or lacked quality opponents. Personally, anomaly or not, I think there is more talent & depth available over the next 2-3 years (incl this year) and if there is no step-up at BU in that time then it's time to move on.

Amen.
If this was '80s music...Jim Les would be Tommy Tutone, and Dana Altman would be The Cars...
I'd much rather listen to Altman's Greatest Hits than Les's "Jenny (867-5309)" on repeat over and over again..

That's so funny as I was just listening to The Cars Greatest hits the other day in my car. They had a lot of good stuff... Especially the entire first album.

Didn't take long to get back to ISU...again. Yes, Jankovic is scheduling for Ws and is looking for the next step up, but don't you think that ADs at other institutions who might want to hire him are going to take a closer look at the numbers than take them a face value.

Once again, 129-106 is no reason to name a building after him. After the S16 run was Les in the mix for any other job?

This is getting old. If you need your fix go and look at some old threads because as we know not much as changed between April 2009 and November 2009! Most on this site believe JL has been good for the program but want a bit more and probably expect to see more the next 2 years or there may be an uproar. Most here believe that Dana Altman without doubt has ran the most successful program in the Valley the last 10 years. Let's just leave it at that.

Hey SFP are the things you write reasons or excuses? I seem to get them confused all the time. What's the old saying one man's reasons are another man's excuses? or is that trash & treasure - guess it works for both!!

BTW - well stated. Still waiting for someone to decode the twitter quote I put in here though.

So.....it's ok to forget about the most successful season in recent memory while some would like to include the years before that in JL's losing MVC record? Those first three seasons, by the way, account for more than half of JL's losses in the Valley.

Interesting.

S...I don't think anyone is "discounting" the season....just putting it into context regarding the topic.

It was a good season with a pretty terrific ending.......some would rather trade that ONE season, alphabet tourneys, middle of the pack Valley for multiple bids...tourney championships....valley titles/finals...and MVC top finishes thats all.
