2010 BU recruit- Jordan Brown

I haven't heard any confirmation of this, but the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper has reported that Jordan Brown, an Atlanta, will be attending Bradley this fall as a preferred walkon with academic scholarship.

Just my opinion, but that likely means JL is planning to have all scholarships filled...

Cold weather and snow shut down much of Georgia these past couple of days, but Westlake High School (23-6) might have the cure for the wintry mix. Guard Jordan Brown may be counted on to bring some instant heat to his team's Wednesday match-up with Tift County (20-9).

Brown has gotten a reputation for heating up quickly for the Lions. "They actually gave me the nickname "Microwave," Brown said, "So I come in and knock down shots and take care of business."

Brown says he did just that in Westlake's 22-point victory over Johnson, Savannah (9-14). "Personally, I thought I played my role pretty well. I was ready when coach called on me," the class of 2010 prospect said.

The senior said the success for his team was far from instant. "We started off slow in the first half, but we brought it all back together and played really well in the second half," he said.

The win was yet another victory for the Lions at home. "We haven't lost a game at home all season. We feel real comfortable playing at our house… The atmosphere is better. We've got the crowd behind us at all times," Brown said.

That is bad news for Tift County, which will travel to Westlake for the second-round playoff game. Brown says he had not yet gotten the scouting report for the team, but he was sure his team would be ready for the Blue Devils. "We're always ready to get anybody that comes our way," he said.

Westlake will certainly have at least one more talented team come its way, should they beat Tift County, who is coming off of an overtime win over Stephenson (21-8 ). Of those possible teams, some of them like Wheeler (21-7) or Norcross (26-2) have gotten more attention and have been picked as favorites to come home with the 5A state title. Westlake is often overlooked, but Brown says the picks do not matter. "It just motivates us even more to know people already doubt us, but we're going to do our best to try to prove them wrong," he said.

Brown says the best way to do that is to take things one game at a time.

If Westlake wins then they will take on the winner of the Savannah-Coffee game.

Pretty cool that BU's academic reputation, and, basketball reputation, is deliverying a quality walk on to BU from outside Illinois.

Hopefully JB will walk on here and ultimately be a success here.

Other late developing players from around the country with great academic backgrounds would see BU as a place for a great education and a chance to become a major college BB player....

Every little bit helps when looking for players!
 
I have heard Jordan visited Bradley and loved everything about it. He was recruited by Bradley and a number of other schools.

I find it hard to believe that he had no "worthy" scholarship offers if he is a Top 20 Atlanta area player. That area is such a hotbed of talent. If this is true we may be getting a real steal...... ala Taylor Brown. :)

Would love that if it's being held for MO. Otherwise, I could see this as a way to save the basketball scholarship for next season. The more I read about this kid, the more I like......and the fact that he's on academic scholarship is a huge bonus!
 
Doesn't an academic scholarship mean that he must redshirt next year, similiar to DA? (Although DA needed that year for medical reasons, too)

If academic scholarships could play immediately, bcs schools could find a way to have a much larger roster.
 
I've got to think if we don't get MO that his scholarship will go to this kid. Otherwise, I think JL must have promised him an athletic scholarship for next year. The more I read about this kid the more I like him. He may just be a bigger find and steal than Taylor Brown.

Ryan Phillips was in a similar situation in 2006-2007. As a freshman, Ryan was on the active roster, and played in 11 games that year.
Brian Lavin was similar- he appeared in 5 games as a walkon his freshman season 2005-2006.
Other Bradley walkons like Ryan Sunley and Chris Mroz have all played as true freshmen.

Jordan's teammate Marcus Thornton was named "Mr. Basketball" in Georgia for 2010, and signed with the University of Georgia-

Looks like Jordan's high school team, Atlanta Westlake HS, had a pretty successful season last year. They finished 30-3, were the top ranked team in Class 5A (largest schools), for much of the season, and made it to the 5A Championship game.
They were favored to win the championship, but their star player Marcus Thornton suffered a bizarre injury during warmups for the title game, and ended up having to sit out, leading to Westlake's loss. It was Westlake's third Final Four berth during in the last 4 years.

As I said above, regardless what happens with MO, I don't think it's too likely we'll have a scholarship left open.
There are still a few transfers that might be considering BU. I think the scholarship will probably get filled one way or another.

I think I may have found out the official answer - I believe you are right, ph. Danny Adams' redshirt his freshman season may have been required as the NCAA has some kind of rule about "recruited walk-ons" who received financial aid from the university. So, even though he benefitted medically from a redshirt year, he may have had to redshirt by the NCAA rules.
The other guys I mentioned apparently fall under a different circumstance: a true walkon (someone who tries out and makes the team, but who was not recruited out of high school to attend as a walkon). They are eligible to play right away.
 
So we either sign another player to a basketball scholarship and JB sits out this season on an academic scholarship and is able to play out his eligibility without using a basketball scholarship.....we don't sign another player to a basketball scholarship this season and JB is granted that basketball scholarship.....we don't sign another player to a basketball scholarship this season and JB remains on academic scholarship (essentially redshirting) and is available to play out his eligibility either on academic or basketball scholarship.

I actually wouldn't mind if he used an academic scholarship this season, worked with the team, and still had four years to play without using a basketball scholarship. I think we're good at guard this season and would love to see a player like this come in with DS and SH next season. Hopefully, we get MO and that is exactly what happens.

However, what happens if he is given a basketball scholarship this season....is he able to use an academic scholarship in the future instead of the basketball scholarship? I'm guessing this is possible, but he'd have to sit out whichever year is his first on academic scholarship. :confused:
 
Thanks DaCoach. I thought Bradley mentioned that about DA

Marcus Jordan(UIUC) went off and on basketball scholarship and never had to redahirt,(other than a self imposed summer redshirt) but I'm sure he could pay. DA went on and off basketball scholarship, so Id assume that the academic scholarships did not get cancelled.

As a complete guess, I would think no additional redshirt if you start as a basketball scholarship, but I'm not sure.
