2019 transfers

per one of the 247Sports contributors...

- as of this morning, there are 879 DI transfers
- 392 are still uncommitted, 76 grad transfers are yet uncommitted, only 27 of the 392 averaged 10 ppg or more. 183 avg less than 2 ppg or did not play last yr.
- of the entire 879 transfers-
-- only 24 averaged 15 ppg or more (2.7%)
-- 108 averaged 10 ppg or more (12.3%)
-- 186 averaged 5-9.99 ppg (21.2%)
-- 511 averaged under 5 ppg (58.1%)

Danya Kingsby did not play last year at LSU but averaged 13.3 ppg in 2017-18 at College of Southern Idaho
Terry Nolan, Jr. averaged 10.6 ppg at George Washington

NCAA now is changing gears and they want to make it MORE DIFFICULT
for transfer kids to get waivers

Cases are still to be decided on a case-by-case basis but circumstances now need .....
"requiring "documented extenuating, extraordinary and mitigating circumstances
outside of the student-athlete's control that directly impacts the health, safety or
well-being of the student-athlete."

The addition of those two words "extenuating and extraordinary" as well as
other language throughout the proposal, appears to send the message that the NCAA
wants to tighten up on the requirements for waivers."

..some transfers will require -
"a written statement from the athletics director at the previous school" - detailing the circumstances as "outside of the student-athlete's control".

"In cases where athletes transfer within 100-mile radius of their home due to injury or illness to an immediate family member or because of a pregnancy, the NCAA's proposal requires more paperwork from both schools, including "a treatment plan detailing the student-athlete's caregiving responsibilities."

Here is another surprising transfer. Highly rated big man Carte'Are Gordon from the St. Louis area was pursued by some of the top schools in the country initially committed to St. Louis University. But as a freshman, he played only in the first 13 games in 2018-19, and then in mid-January, 2019 he left St. Louis, saying he needed a "better fit". He didn't seem to get along with St. Louis head coach Travis Ford and there were rumors that he didn't work hard. He started early his freshman season at St. Louis, but then was benched. Other rumors swirled that his leaving was not all Gordon's decision, which is surprising because Ford runs a fairly loose ship and has a reputation of sometimes letting his kids get away with a lot.
Then in February, he landed at DePaul-

He would not have been eligible at DePaul until after the first semester. And, 3 weeks ago this glowing article appeared praising Gordon's work ethic!-

Dave Leitao is likewise not exactly known as a strict disciplinarian. So, the fact that Gordon can't seem to get along with coaches, even coaches who started him from day one, and who have praised his "work ethic", and who really need the size and inside strength he could provide, is not a good sign for him. Let's see who might offer the kid a scholarship next. I can think of one MVC coach who happily made a deal with the Devil and took a previous disgruntled cast-off from St. Louis University and overlooked his numerous legal issues as well as disciplinary issues hoping it would get him to the NCAA Tournament, which it didn't. I suspect he is among a handful of coaches who would happily take another miscreant like Gordon if he could help him win a game.

Josh Jefferson is a sharpshooting 6'2" guard who excelled for 2 seasons at Lake Land College, then transferred and played in 2018-19 at Illinois State. Despite battling injuries that season, he was 4th on the team in scoring (8.7 ppg) and was their top 3-point shooter (40.2%). But he fell out of favor with Dan Muller, and transferred to Wisconsin-Green Bay, and sat out this past season (2019-20).

He is from the same high school, New Albany HS in New Albany, Indiana, as incoming Bradley transfer Sean East. Jefferson graduated in 2016, Sean East graduated in 2018. They played together on a Class 4A Indiana state championship team in 2016.-

UW-Green Bay fans got a little bit of good news today. Former ISU shooting guard Josh Jefferson, who transferred to Green Bay a year ago, sat out a year and was due to play his senior season in 2020-21, had announced he was transferring after their head coach Linc Darner was fired. But now he is returning to Green Bay. He was not a grad-transfer, despite 4 years of college, so this is probably a good move for him. He will be able to get his degree, and play next season, instead of having to transfer to a D2 school.

This is too bad. He is a very talented kid, but issues started to pop up in HS. Then when he ended up at SLU, I thought his best bet was to figure things out there and star in the A-10. Now I am guessing he will never max out his potential.
