Bradley's first game is at St. Joseph's University on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 6:00 pm Central. The game will be played in the Hagen Arena, a 4,200 seat arena on their campus. It is an old building that was called Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse from 1949-2008. It was closed and underwent a $25 million renovation and reopened in 2009 as the Hagen Arena, named after an alumnus who donated $10 million.

The game is available on ESPN+. A subscription to ESPN+ is $4.99 per month, and can be cancelled at any time. At least a dozen Bradley games this season are on ESPN+, so it may be worth subscribing if fans like to watch the games.

The St. Joseph's Hawks are members of the Atlantic-10 Conference. They have a new head coach, former Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Billy Lange, who took over for Phil Martelli who had coached there for the last 24 seasons. Lange was head coach at Navy from 2004-2011, and was 92-115 in his 7 seasons there.
They have some talented players back plus a couple good recruits and a couple transfers who are eligible to play immediately.
Bradley's all-time record against St. Joseph's is 4-1. The last time they played was Dec 27, 1986, at St. Joe's, and Bradley lost 86-77

An interesting article today (Friday, Nov. 1) from the Philadelphia Inquirer previewing this season's St. Joseph's team-

Stats from 2018-19-
http://www.sjuhawks.com/fls/31200/st...9/teamcume.htm

The team has changed significantly with the coaching change. They lost their top 4 scorers. The top 3 scorers from last season would have returned this season, but they have left and either transferred or went pro. Their 4th leading scorer from last season graduated. They have only 11 scholarship players, and two of them are a former walk-ons with limited D1 experience. Another of their scholarship players is a Gonzaga transfer who will sit out this season. And another transfer, 6'7" Myles Douglas from UCF (2.0 ppg and 1.1 rpg last year at UCF), was just surprisingly granted a waiver to be eligible immediately this season. That probably helps SJU a little, as they were going to be thin in their frontcourt. Their only other big men (taller than 6'5") are 6'10" junior center Anthony Longpre (3.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg), 6'8" junior Taylor Funk (8.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and 6'8" junior Lorenzo Edwards (5.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg).

Their top player could be 6'4" guard Ryan Daly, a redshirt-junior transfer from Delaware who sat out last season at SJU and will be a junior this season. He lead Delaware in scoring both his freshman (16.0 ppg) and sophomore (17.5 ppg) years.
Bradley played against Ryan Daly twice while he was with Delaware.
BU played at Delaware on 11/13/16 in Coach Wardle's 2nd season. Delaware beat Bradley 63-49 in one of Bradley's worst offensive performances in memory. Bradley was just 5-25 in the first half, and 0-12 from three, and they trailed 34-15 at halftime. The 2nd half was a little better, but not enough to overcome the deficit, and Bradley lost 63-49. Ryan Daly had 4 points off the bench for Delaware as a freshman.

They played again on 11/14/17 and Bradley beat the Blue Hens 61-53 in Carver Arena. Bradley held Delaware leading scorer Ryan Daly to 1-11 shooting and just 3 points in that game-

The Bradley Scout has a great preview article on the 2019-20 Bradley Braves.
Does anyone else remember there was once a time that the Peoria Journal Star used to cover Bradley basketball like this. They used to have daily in-depth articles about the team, the new players, how the returning players have improved, team's goals, strategies, any changes in style of play, recruiting, etc.
Now they don't seem to give a s**t, IMO. Now we get brief recaps of games, if we are lucky.

Check the links at the bottom for more good coverage of Bradley men's and women's basketball.

Coach, I can’t think of any sport’s writer that covers details as well as you do. I’m always amazed by the information on BU Men’s basketball on this forum and know it’s the best one in college basketball thanks to you.
You really should get paid for your talents. They are literally second to none and your breakdown of the St. Joe’s game is a perfect example.
Thanks for the time and effort you put in. I am a grateful recipient.

Thank you Tommy. It is gratifying just to know some fans appreciate it. Bradley basketball has always been a passion of mine, and it really isn't much work to simply research and post the kinds of facts and data I post. And if it helps "promote the Bradley Brand" or helps inform Bradley fans, it is worth it and I am happy to do it.
That is why I am amazed the local media doesn't do a better job. Allow me to rant off the topic a bit....
We know that Bradley basketball and other Bradley sports stories are followed by more fans than just about anything else in local sports. Yet unfortunately, we get minimal coverage, and way less than in past years. We still get lots of in-depth stories about the Rivermen and their players virtually every day (two great new stories in today's paper, plus a box score, something the PJ Star doesn't do for any other sport any more!). But Bradley sports get far less coverage. If anyone thinks I am overstating this, just check out the local newspapers in Carbondale, Bloomington, Springfield MO, Terre Haute, Evansville, Northwest Indiana (Valpo), and the other MVC cities. They all get much better coverage of their teams. I guess those newspaper beat writers aren't as concerned that they might "promote the school's Brand"

Here are a couple examples- Bradley volleyball won a tremendous and exciting 5-set match last night against rival ISU. Bradley soccer played a match yesterday as their season winds down. And the MVC Cross Country Championships are today with Bradley men & women having unprecedented successes and who have a good shot at getting athletes to the NCAA. Yet I can't find a single mention of any of these Bradley sports stories in the PJ Star.
And it's not just Bradley. University of Illinois played an exhibition basketball game last night against Lewis University. Again, there is not even a mention in the PJ Star about the game or even anything in previous days that the game was being played!
But the Bloomington Pantagraph has a great story about the game-
https://www.pantagraph.com/sports/co...a6f696df3.html

How can the Pantagraph manage to do it, but the PJ Star completely ignores these sports stories that are important to local readers? Sorry, but I am not buying the excuses. Their "print deadline" seems like just one of those excuses, since those events did not run late and were competed early enough to report. Plus, there isn't any mention of any of those stories in the online version either, and the "print deadline" shouldn't affect the digital version, should it?

Coach - I echo Tommy's comments. Thank you! I just re-upped my subscription to ESPN+. I only keep it active during the BU season. Pretty excited this year, especially after watching the exhibition game. Gabriel has already joined Childs and Henry as a personal favorite.

Regarding the PJS, I don't think the degradation of the paper is limited to the poor coverage of Bradley. It's across the board. The paper is mostly just a collection of information from the AP, and I personally don't think any of the local staff writers are worth reading. I only maintain a (electronic) subscription for the obituaries.

Thanks again for all you do for this web site.

Hey Classof77, I can save you some money! You do not need a subscription (print or electronic) to read the obituaries. The obituaries (and the editorials) are free to read and always have been on PJSTAR.com!

There are also ways to read any article without paying for a subscription. PM me if you want to know how.

DC its not only the lack of coverage regarding BU BB it's also the lack of coverage of our HS's. It's totally pathetic. Take for example,pg 3 whole page about NASCAR not acceptable. Not against NASCAR but a whole page. You got to be kidding me. Page 5 ,nice article about Pekin football team but only a couple paragraphs about results of 3 local playoff teams and a bigger article about the Washington Nats win. WHO CARES. Page 6 ,whole pg about BIG 10 Football again whoo CARES. Can't wait until my yearly subscription is up. I'm done with this rag. If they want my business after 51 years they're gonna almost have to give it to me. I don't even need them to start my fireplace.

Well said Tommy!!

Ditto to what Tommy said. PJ Star is pathetic in their coverage of the Braves. If it wasn’t for Da Coach and his inside info no one would have a clue what is happening on the hilltop. All of us on this board appreciate all you do for us...

I live in Wisconsin, and I'm sure all of us who lives away from the Peoria area, deeply appreciate what you guys do. Thank you.
GO BRADLEY

Joe Lunardi will be on the ESPN+ call. Will also be on NBC Sports Philadelphia+ if you happen to be in the Philly area (and if you are, just go to the game!)

Then click on "Sign Up Now" and it will ask you to set up an account. If you already had an account in the past, click the bottom link that says "Already have an account? Log In"

But remember to cancel the subscription after the final ESPN+ game, which is the February 22, 2020 game at Valparaiso.
Games after that will be on other available networks.
I will post another reminder at the end of February to remind everyone to cancel their subscriptions, since it will continue to auto-renew indefinitely.

I believe the St. Joseph's game is the most important of our season so far. ;-) Seriously, I am super excited for this game. If we have hopes to be taken seriously nationally -- and I think all of us do -- this has to be a "W." It's a chance to get a road win against a team from a solid conference -- and with Joe Lunardi on the call!

I would love to be undefeated heading into playing the big boys in Fort Myers. One at a time, starting tomorrow night!

Yes, DC thanks for all the time and the information you share, especially for those of us out of the area and are not on the 'inside';.

Thanks LTF!

I renewed my subscription to ESPN+ tonight to be able to watch the game tomorrow. We're having a private watch party with a bunch of other Bradley fans. I wish I could have made it to game in Philadelphia, but maybe next time. :)
It is amazing how many games are available to watch each night, including a number of Bradley women's games, games involving other MVC teams, lots of other college games, and thousands of other sports events. It is a deal that is well worth it to a sports nut like me.

By the way, here is my preview of Tuesday's game one more time, which I posted last week-

And despite another source erroneously reporting- "It’s the first time in 35 years that college coaching icon Phil Martelli, who was dismissed last spring, hasn’t been the program’s head coach"..., Martelli was the head coach at St. Joseph's for only the last 24 years, as I said in my preview.

One more day. Go Braves.

The broadcast team will be Matt Martucci and Joe Lunardi. The game will be broadcast in the Philadelphia area on NBC Sports Philadelphia+, and their broadcast will be picked up and streamed by ESPN+.

Matt Martucci is the regular play-by-play voice for the St. Joseph's Hawks, and has been doing their TV broadcasts for the past 11 years-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Martucci

Joe Lunardi is more widely known for his ESPN Bracketology. He is a St. Joseph's alum and works as Assistant Vice President of Marketing Communications at St. Joseph's University. He has been the color commentator with Matt Martucci since they began doing game broadcasts together in 2009.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Lunardi

Interestingly, St. Joseph's no longer has radio broadcasts, but they have their audio stream available on Tune-In Radio.

BU/SJU listed as one of 10 best ESPN+ opening week games:

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-b...-weekly-espn+-viewer-guide-college-basketball
[h=3]10. Bradley Braves at Saint Joseph's Hawks (Tuesday, 7 p.m. ET)[/h] Following an NCAA tournament appearance in which they gave Michigan State a scare in the opening round, Bradley returns four of its top five scorers including senior guard Darrell Brown. The Braves have higher goals this season with limited chances to beef up their résumé.

Later in the nonconference schedule, Brian Wardle's squad faces Northwestern in the Fort Myers Tip-Off, will play either Pittsburgh or Kansas State in the next round and will travel to No. 14 Memphis. Other than those three matchups, Bradley doesn't face a ranked or Power 5 opponent for the remainder of the regular season and plays just two nonconference road games.

Saint Joseph's, meanwhile, begins the Billy Lange era after the school fired Phil Martelli in March. The Hawks are projected to finish 13th in the Atlantic 10 preseason coaches poll after losing Charlie Brown Jr. and Lamarr Kimble.
