NCAA bracket and results

But the bigger point is not that we think Drake or Bradley or UNI would have bulldozed teams like Duke, Michigan State, or Texas Tech and made it to the Sweet 16, Elite 8, or Final Four. That probably would not happen, though it did happen in 2006, when they put 4 MVC teams in the MVCT and gave them a chance. Bradley and Wichita State both made it to the Sweet 16, and another mid-major, George Mason, made it to the Final Four.

The bigger point is that every team is awarded about $2 million for each game played. So if the MVC could get 2 or possibly 3 teams in the tournament, and maybe one or two advance, that would bring in an additional $5 to $10 million dollars to the MVC every year. That is many times the athletic department budgets of any MVC school. Just think what the MVC schools could do with that kind of revenue- bigger recruiting budgets, better facilities, maybe more money back-channeled into NIL. It would greatly improve the qualify of the every team in the MVC, and would lead to more MVC teams qualifying for future bids.

That scenario frightens the Power Conferences. They simply cannot allow it. It's why they keep changing their selection formulas and keeping some of them "secret" to keep mid-majors out. They do not want to share that money with mid-majors, even though it is a drop in the bucket compared to the athletic department budgets of those Power Conference teams that range from $100 million to over $200 million per year. It wouldn't hurt them a bit if a little more money went to mid-majors, but they are afraid it would improve those programs, make them more competitive, and steal future bids and more NCAA money.
Mid-majors just want a chance to play and get a small piece of the massive NCAA revenue pie.

Just for comparison, I found this article from 2021 regarding the NIT:

https://www.sportico.com/leagues/college-sports/2021/ncaa-nit-revenue-1234625859/

"The NCAA has a complex way of rewarding teams for participating in March Madness. For the NIT, it’s much simpler. In addition to having travel, hotel and other expenses comped, each school in the NIT is given $4,000 for every game it plays. It’s a total payout pool of $128,000 this year."

Trust me I'm as adversarial to how stacked the system as anyone. But, I can also be a realist, after watching Drake be outclassed by Texas Tech to realize that if you gave the top four of the MVC this year bids, it's unlikely any of them make the Sweet 16. Hitting at a 50% rate is still impressive.

No less likely than over half the SEC teams that were invited, but then we'll never know because mid-majors don't get the invites. And I know you're not sticking up for the PC's, so this is not me arguing with you. I know we both feel the same way on this subject matter. As we've all discussed here in the past, if the tournament isn't a tournament of champions, then what is the point? If they just want to have a PC tournament, then call it that and stop pretending that it's anything else.

Gonna be all four #1 seeds in the Final Four...
is anyone watching? Does anyone even care at this point - I don't.

I am anxious to find out the ratings for this years NCAA. I will bet it is not as good as in years past

well, the ratings are starting to filter in....

For the first week, that included a few mid-major upsets like Drake's win, the ratings were very good - up 4% from last year and among the most watched 1st weekends of the NCAA Tournament in 30 years. Viewership peaked at 10 million viewers for the UK-Illinois game, and averaged 6.36 million for early games and 3-4 million for the later games.

BUT we are just now seeing a decline for this 2nd week of the tourney. The numbers are in for Thursday, 3/27- and the viewership has dropped
10% - LINK
Ratings for Friday, Saturday and today are still pending.

On more thing - the ratings thus far for the women's NCAA Tourney are DOWN 28% from last year...
Gee- I wonder what the factor there is???

Ratings are out for the Sweet Sixteen round
and they are DOWN 11-16% from last year despite that the earlier rounds before the mid-majors were all eliminated- had all been UP.
The Elite Eight games ratings are not yet out. IMG_3898.jpg

Collusion seems to be biting them in the ass. I hope it only gets worse until they fix the mess they've created.

The ratings are in for the last couple rounds of the NCAA Tourney
they are overall down from 2024 but the Duke- Alabama game did well.
The Houston-Tennessee game was the lowest rated Elite Eight game since 2008.

Good I hope they keep going down

there's speculation that Duke draws well because they have so many haters wanting to see them lose! LOL
Considering how much the games are being hyped & promoted - for that Houston game to get the worst ratings in 17 years
speaks volumes about how little people care now that all the non-#1 seed teams are gone.

Wouldn't it be an ironic storybook ending if the Championship game was Houston vs Auburn?
The two most historic, massive cheaters in all of college sports, Bruce Pearl & Kelvin Sampson, facing each other for the title.

Because I don’t want to see either of them, but especially Pearl, win anything I’m hoping for Florida to beat Duke in the championship.

Florida beats Houston 65-63 to win the 2025 National Championship - https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/boxscore/_/gameId/401746082

Ugliest National Championship game I've ever seen. Lots of bad shots, missed layups, turnovers, fouls, missed free throws, and poor 3-point shooting by both teams. And to cap it off, Houston had the final possession with a chance to tie or win, and they completely flubbed it and never got a shot off. Both teams shot under 40% for the game, and both shot 25% or less from three.

There is a reason for the bad shooting, the officials are not calling enough fouls and it has turned basketball into a combination of both football and basketball. There are pretty much no real rules being followed anymore. Travelling, palming the ball, 3 seconds in the lane and constant fouling all over the place has been allowed all season. The thing about letting them play is the reason why we see so many more injuries in the game today. I have said all season that I really don"t know what a foul is now because players are allowed to knock each other down and no call or barely touch someone and a foul is called, just wish they would go back to calling the game by the actual rule book.

Yeah, college basketball is becoming more like the NBA every day. They don't call the stuff they should (traveling, 3 seconds, etc.) as you pointed out, then they blow the whistle 40 times a game with no consistency and no desire to let the kids actually play basketball. This was an extremely frustrating year as far as officiating goes, but what do you do? It seems as if this is the direction it's headed and there's not much we can do as fans to address it. Seems like Wardle has accepted it, as well, and has looked at it as just an obstacle/part of the game that needs to be overcome.

For me, I just don't want the game stopped every 30 seconds and I'd be happy.

Really happy to see neither cheater coaches in the F4 win the chip this year. Thank God.

before you get too teary-eyed over Kelvin Sampson and Bruce Pearl, remember that both earn in the range of $6-7 million per year
and both have career earning from the coaching profession of somewhere in the $60-80 million range.
