Kentucky spending $22 million in NIL on this year's roster

There's an NIL story just now emerging within the past hour... but unconfirmed and not yet being reported
anywhere except on Twitter. So at this point, only rumor- beware it may be false -- time will tell

but if you're into rumors ---
...at USC, there was supposedly an altercation between their best or "star" player and the head coach Eric Musselman,
arguing over NIL money. Time will tell if this is a real story or some unfounded rumor.
But even if false, this kind of thing is going to happen sooner or later with the money involved...
(the player in question is rumored to be getting $2-3 million in NIL)

I wonder in a few years if we start seeing a stunted development among NBA players as they will already be millionaires by the time they get to the league. May not be much incentive to get better...a few will have that hunger still, but for most, it may be enough where they are.

Iowa State Head coach Matt Campbell had a success at Iowa State the last couple seasons (11-3 in 2024 and 8-4 in 2025) and today he was hired as the new head coach at Penn State. At Penn State he'll get paid more, but he'll also have millions more to spend on his players.
Iowa State hired Washington State head coach Jimmy Rogers as the new Iowa State head coach. Then the Iowa State AD talked about the money they had to pay the players- www.x.com/cfchangs9/status/1998072225438609675

He revealed that Iowa State's budget to pay players was $20 million total for all sports.
It breaks down to $13 million for Football, $5 million for men's basketball, $1 million for wrestling, and $750,000 for women's basketball. The remaining is given to all the athletes in the other sports at $2,000 each.
And he is complaining about how that isn't enough money to compete consistently, and they need to raise more money.
He also mentions that new coach Jimmy Rogers had only $2.5 million to spend on his football team at Washington State, so he will be getting $11 million more at Iowa State.

Coaching changes during the season? Kind of strange, if so.

It’s been out of control for some time…first it was below the table and behind closed doors. Now it’s out in the open and fraught with unfairness as the haves overwhelm the havenots. There’s no easy fix and few teenagers capable of managing mega dollars.

The genie is not going back in the bottle without plethora of lawsuits, congressional regulations, and schools dropping athletics or division I
Status.

I’m still baffled at how exactly the NCAA and these universities conned the fan base to pay all this money, only to hear these jabronies whine about needing more money to pay their players. Use some of your own bloated salary to pay them, brah!

This should be contractual between university and student, but I’m just repeating what many have said on these forums before.

I thought this was interesting, since we are in a week without much basketball.
Drake players were given a couple days off, and Drake star Jalen Quinn returned to his hometown of Tuscola, Illinois (east of Deactur) and visited his high school. He gifted all the varsity basketball players with a new pair of Nike Kobe basketball shoes ($200+ shoes!). What a nice gesture! Can't help but admire kids like this.

the aforementioned "star player" just got booted off the team at USC
averages 18.5 ppg but has transferred more times than Roman Domon flops and has been playing college basketball since before Covid...

I don't know how accurate these numbers are, but this college basketball blogger who only has 450 followers on X.com, claims these are the top 15 college teams in NIL spending. I have seen other sources that give slightly higher numbers.
www.x.com/ConnerHaleSprts/status/2039784524003852569

1. Kentucky (SEC) — $21M–$23M
2. BYU (Big 12) — $15M
3. Duke (ACC) — $14M
4. Arkansas (SEC) — $12.5M
5. Indiana (Big Ten) — $12M
6. Louisville (ACC) — $11.5M–$12M
7. Texas Tech (Big 12) — $11.5M
8. St. John’s (Big East) — $11.5M
9. Michigan (Big Ten) — $11.5M
10. Kansas (Big 12) — $9.5M–$10M
11. Tennessee (SEC) — $9.5M
12. Providence (Big East) — $10M+ (explicitly targeting big portal spend under new HC Bryan Hodgson)
13. Arizona (Big 12) — $9.5M
14. North Carolina (ACC) — ~$9M–$10M (consistent top-tier spender)
15. UCLA (Big Ten) — $8M–$9.5M (Cronin pushing for more; USC similar range in Big Ten)

The new head coach at Providence, Brian Hodgson, said this about the first few days on the job, and the out-of-control NIL demands of recruits and their NIL agents.
"I haven't spoken to a single agent or kid on the phone that's asked for less than a million dollars. Not one. Right now, it's a little out of control."

Further insight into changes brought on by NIL money.

This has been big, look at ILL, who has several top tier players from Europe. Many that play in pro-leagues over seas make in the high 5 figures to mid six figures a year. Now, star players and the top power conference teams can easily make a million. Makes sense for these overseas guys to want to play in college now. Especially now that we have seen players that played pro get eligibility.
