Coaching Carousel

Nothing is guaranteed for life if enough money is offered. IMO.
Personally, I think Jacobson's window of opportunity to move to a higher job may be closing. UNI is not having the kind of year everyone expected. They were picked 2nd behind Illinois State, and they are currently tied for 5th place. 4 of their top 6 scorers are seniors, and Jacobson has not had much success in the portal.
I agree DC, I actually don't see any of those MVC coaches as viable candidates for any P4 or P5 job unless they make at least an Elite 8 run.

You are probably right. It did work for Ben McCollum and Darian DeVries, and Josh Schertz got a nice boost in pay when he took the St. Louis job, though it wasn't a Power Conference team. But all of those were coming off stellar seasons and dominating the MVC and winning championships. Jacobson's Northern Iowa team has underachieved this year, and his best success is years in the past. His last NCAA bid was 10 years ago.

there have been some P-5 hires of coaches who never made an Elite Eight run
Keno Davis, John Groce, Ben McCollum, and Mizzou hired a mid-major guy who simply went 20-11 and lost in the first round of the NIT.
Some, like Bruce Weber who didn't make the Elite Eight at SIU, turned out to be pretty good hires.

get the hair tonic ready - he'll head back to his TV gig....
(unconfirmed)- Steve Lavin is out at San Diego with 3 games left in their regular season.
4 years there, 46-79, 18-47 in conference play, even worse than the guy they fired when the hired Lavin

Tarleton State (relatively new to DI - 2020) will dismiss Billy Gillispie at the end of the season
He was 92-89 overall at Tarleton State as members on the WAC. He was 25-10 in 2023-24 finishing 2nd in the WAC,
after being picked in the preseason to finish 6th, winning the WAC Coach of the Year Award.

Oregon State is firing their head coach Wayne Tinkle
One of Bradley's current recruits, Ryan Hunt - is pondering an offer from Oregon State plus one of Bradley's
former targets, Kahu Treacher - had already committed to Oregon State - so look for his recruitment to possibly open up.
sure enough Kahu Treacher has now DE-committed from Oregon State & is back on the board- LINK
Recall, he still has a Bradley offer and was one guy BU was targeting.... here's a couple former posts about him

Lamar Head Coach Alvin Brooks is the next to be let go.... they lost 8 straight and finished 12-19
He is the father of former Bradley assistant coach Alvin Brooks III who is now an assistant at Kentucky.

no, I meant it's the perfect job for Muller to get back into coaching...
aren't going to be too many top candidates.

I will be surprised if a top P-5 assistant would take the NIU job
They will look hard at DII guys

NIU has fired their head coach.
Wasn't fired. His contract expired, or is due to expire soon, and wasn't renewed.

Several people on the NIU board have been clamoring, since last season, for Bryan Mullins, formerly of SIU. I don't know who, in their right mind, would take this job. I call it Chicago State West for a reason. It's a dead end job and only two head coaches in 50 or so years have gone onto other head coaching jobs. Jim Molinari went to Bradley after just two years at NIU, taking them to the Big Dance in his second year, and Mark Montgomery is currently at Detroit Mercy, but was an assistant for a few seasons in between after being fired at NIU.

I have my BS from NIU and have followed NIU hoops for more than 50 years. Except for a few seasons that can be counted on one hand, NIU men's hoops have sucked this entire time. They sucked when I was there. They are worse than embarrassing.

Knowing the AD, instead of hiring someone with successful head coaching experience, he'll hire some obscure assistant with none and with no meaningful contacts.

EDIT: Here's a quote from someone on the NIU board re: his ideas for NIU's next HC. Mullins' and Majkrzak's names appear in the horizoneroundtable.com article that braves16 posted above:
Bryan Mullins - Former SIU HC

Matt Majkrzak - Northern Michigan. Currently 27-5

Brett Ballard / Washburn. Former player at Kansas. 30-4 last year. Currently 29-1

JR Blount - Well regarded assistant in year 5 at Iowa Stae

Kyle Smithpeters - Current assistant at Mizzou after a successful decade at juco John A. Logan.

We could offer a raise to each of these coaches. Ballard is the one who really intrigues me.
