even with a win, UTPA is so bad at 0-6 that their RPI causes Drakes RPI to drop,
even worse, Drake's next game is against 0-7 NC Central, whose RPI is 340 (out of 341)

For Drake and ISU, their scheduling is hurting the Valley!
ISU's earlier opponent SMU won, but they beat a DII -- so no help for their RPI

I forget but wasn't there some sort of rule put in place by Elgin to stop this awful scheduling a few years back? Whatever happened to that?

And really....beating UTPA by 2 points....

Actually playing an 0-7 team may be worse on RPI than a loss. RPI doesn't care when you lose or who to, it's just a calculation based on record.

The ISU beat writer, Jim Benson, did an interview with MVC Comissioner Doug Elgin, and much of it was about scheduling and how "Nonconference foes could hurt ISU in long run". The rule about penalizing schools for playing teams with RPIs lower than 150 came up.

Illinois State is the Valley??™s lone undefeated team with a 7-0 record, its best start in 31 years. However, the Web site realtimerpi.com had the Redbirds 173rd out of 343 teams on Thursday largely based on a strength-of-schedule ranking of 339.
ISU is the only Valley school that doesn??™t have an opponent from one of the top six leagues on its nonconference schedule this season. Thus far, the Valley has gone 2-12 against BCS football schools with victories by Northern Iowa (against Auburn) and Missouri State (against Arkansas).
After ISU was the Valley??™s lone NCAA tourney representative in 1997 and 1998, Elgin said the league ???took careful consideration and analysis about what we needed to do to command more respect and get more teams in the ???Big Dance.??™ ???

The solution? The Valley started a ???150??? rule in 2001, which had three stipulations:
-- For Valley teams to finish the season with a 149 or better RPI rating;
-- Play a nonconference schedule of opponents with a combined RPI rating of 149 or better the previous three seasons;
-- Play nonconference opponents with a combined RPI rating of 149 or better at the end of the current season.
Teams that didn??™t meet the criteria were penalized $50,000 from the conference??™s distribution to member schools.
Not only scheduling, but also beating top-notch nonconference teams spurred the Valley to a record four NCAA tourney bids in 2006. The league had at least two NCAA tourney teams every year from 1999 until last year when Drake, which won the Valley??™s regular season and tourney titles, was the lone representative.

 
I read that article and some others over the years about conference rules on scheduling...but I think Elgin
has suspended this "150 rule" and no longer enforces it....note that he says.......
"... take a fresh look at the season just past and determine whether or not we need to legislate (strength of schedule). I don’t believe we do,” said Elgin."

--so Elgin apparently thinks we no longer need to enforce this 150-rule!

but what is the Valley going to do, twist the collective arms of the member schools?
There just seems to be a reason exhibited by schools like ISU, Southern Mississippi, Saint Louis, and even UIUC to schedule the most hideous collection of fluff in their non-conference part of the schedule.
It DOES hurt both the RPI of the league (meaning fewer tourney bids) and it hurts the prestige of the league.


By the way...check oput the reader comment at the bottom of that blog that Da Coach gives a link to...
the fourth guy gives proper credit to Bradley for helping to carry the MVC banner while chastising ISU for such weak scheduling.
