2007-08 Red Shirt

I'm hoping that Anthony Thompson red shirts this year. With SS, RA, DC, and MS down low, I don't see the team needing him this year.

Plus, at 6'10" and 186 lbs., he is painfully skinny and could use an extra year of beefing up. I would think AT would welcome a red shirt year in order to get the most out of his collegiate years. I could see AT making a serious impression on the league as a 4th year jr and 5th year senior.

I don't think you will see a redshirt for Anthony because he is coming a long a lot faster than the coaching staff thought he would.

But is he putting on weight and muscle? I would think that he needs to be at least 210 lbs. in order to compete in a game. Otherwise, I agree that a redshirt would be beneficial.

Both Kevin Garnett and Kevin Durant have played in the NBA at 190 lbs.
I suspect Anthony can play D-I at that wt. but as time goes on he'll be bigger and stronger.
He might redshirt, but we are not so deep at the post that I am sure that's a good idea yet.

Note that Jim Les has never redshirted any player except for medical reasons. He has said he does not like to have players redshirt.

I personally think that there can be a positive purpose for a player redshirting. While this player I am about to mention didn't redshirt, he is playing the role of a redshirt, 5th year player - and that is Daniel Ruffin, one of the nation's best point guards. I specifically remember Jim Les mentioning when it was determined Daniel had to sit out that season, he told Daniel that his 5th year would be much more valuable than that year, as a backup point guard, would be. I don't think there's anyone on this board that would rather have Ruffin then vs. Ruffin now. If a team has the depth, and a player who may not be ready to play but projects well in 3-4 years, a redshirt is a good idea. With only 12 scholarship players, I'm not sure we have the depth for a redshirt of a scholarship player.

I will agree that in terms of player development, redshirting is absolutely a good thing. However, I think that Jims' overall aversion to redshirting might actually be helping the team, especially when it comes to recruiting. Most recruits do not want to redshirt, nor want redshirting to be suggested. By not redshirting, we probably have more, better recriuts entering this year. (I actually think that Weber's preference of redshirting has hurt his recruiting ability with the Illini)

For Ruffin, Although this year will be much better with Ruffin, (Who knows who Jim might of landed last year as Ruffin's replacement) I do wonder how good Bradley could of been his true freshman year. With Cello's knees, Bradley could not be a great team, as Jim relies so heavily on the point guard. Ruffin, most likely, would of had plenty of PT on that team, and that teams record would of been better...

What was Saihou Jasseys' medical reason?

Bradley really could have used Daniel Ruffin his first year he was on campus. They will reap the benefits of him being forced to sit that year, but he would have been very valuable four years ago too.

There's no doubt the could have used him, but would that have put that team over the top? That team had injury and chemistry issues, along with no inside presence whatsoever (Sommerville played more of a 3 and was the only real rebounder we had). I don't think a freshman backup/part-time starting point guard would have solved those. Given the choices of a 1 or 2 game difference then, or DR being among the nation's elite this year and leading us back to the NCAA Tournament, I will pick this year 10 times out of 10.

I kinda have to agree a little with ya BoogieTime. He coulda been valuable 4 yrs ago as a reserve, which in turn would have made 3 yrs ago better. I seem to recall Ruffin struggling at first against MVC pressure (like from Creighton) his 1st year playing.

But whatever value he woulda had in years past, I don't think would outweigh his value for this upcoming season.

Remember, Ruffin's first year playing (academic sophmore year), he was playing with an injured shoulder that I believe required surgery post season. I strongly believe without that injury he would of been more of a difference maker, and likely would of been at least that good his true freshman year.
Still fits into my generalization that in the last 4 years Bradley with a healthy PG = good and with an injured PG = bad. Even during the s16 year, BU lost to SIU in the MVC tourney in part due to Ruffin playing out of gas due to a flu that weekend...

I do not see him redshirting A.T. as we only have 12 scholarship players and players get injured which on any given week would bring that number down; it would be nice to have that option with him as I believe his time will be very limited this season.

Well, then here's to wishing we have many games with big leads to get AT a lot of pt and exposure.

Then again... I just hope we are .500.

Would you really be satisfied with going .500, MM? I, for one would be very disappointed with a .500 season, particularly considering the projections we've seen so far.

Nah - I am only kidding.

I don't want to be accused of being wasted on BU Red kool-aide.

So it is more of like a shrug of my shoulders and a roll of my eyes..... then say 'I hope we are at least .500'.... then I come back at ya with a sly looking smile.
